I just came across your post here. I have to say, some things are not a bargain but many things are. I save a lot of money by shopping at Costco. For one things like bread, specialty cheeses, laundry detergent, flour, sugar, rice, beans, cooking oils, kitty litter, vitamins, and many staples are much much cheaper than grocery stores. You just need to keep up on prices of items in your local stores and know what you are saving on. I happen to save a lot of money via Costco. If I wasn't up on things, then yes, I could see where it might not be very budget friendly. Warehouse shopping has been wonderful in my home. The key is to know what to buy and what not to buy.

Hi Sara:

First, I want to say how much I really enjoy your columns (which I read in the Chicago Sun-Times). You so well come up with great details we can use.

I just finished this article. Like before you bring up different items to contemplate that I would not have thought of but are very important and better prepares me before making any decision.

I want to say thank you for your column.

One more thought about wholesale clubs:

We belong to Sam's off and on. We join and shop for a year, but before expiration date, we stock up on the things we like to buy most, nuts being one thing. We like to buy almonds and walnuts in quantity, but keep them in the 'frig or freezer. Then we let our membership expire for several months. When we run out of everything we like to buy there, we join again. That way, we aren't paying as much to belong.

I agree, I have found that when you are as cheap as we are, there is little to be had in these warehouses that are a good deal. So many of my friends are snookered into thinking everything in there is a 'deal'. With the exception of certain otc meds and occasionally a jar of olive oil, very little is discounted any more than the typical wal-mart prices.

You have a nice blog, i will visit again!
