I waited 5 years to buy drapes for my home. I kept putting it off because there were mini-blinds in every room when I bought. I've never liked the way blinds look generic and bland. At the same time I was reluctant to spend money on heavy drapes. I finally found some gorgeous heavy panels at 50% off at Penneys this spring. I put them in my living and dining room which face South & West. Not only did I AC barely run this summer but it's so much warmer this winter. When I open them on the weekend morings and reach in to raise the blinds I can feel the icy air they held back. I can't tell if they've cut the heat bill since it's unusually cold for Boise this year but it feels a lot nicer. Wish I'd coughed up the money sooner.
