Scrap metal yards are always looking for scrap metal from the demolition of houses, junk yards, etc... so I someone is looking for a little extra cash that is a good source. Generally, one should focus on non-ferrous metals since they are worth more (no iron).

Something else...
Cash in on loyalty cards and pay yourself the money you would have spent.
Always sign up for free loyalty cards, anywhere you regularly shop. Points accumulated can range from free in-house groceries to points that can be redeemed for things like movie passes, household items etc. Use these cards, the cost is already there and in some stores, a reduced price or free item is offered only to card holders. Things like movie passes can be sold to movie goers or friends for cash.

Another option is selling your old jewelry to a refiner. I recently sent some silver to a cash for gold place. I rejected their offer and sent to a refiner. The refiner paid about 3 times what the cash for gold place was offering.

The end result was the same, I lost the silver, but at least I got the most out of it that I could.
