Stay fit on a budget

Gym memberships are a luxury not everyone can afford. And over the holidays, you might pack on a few extra pounds. Fortunately, you can still enjoy the health benefits of exercise without the costly fees, and many can be done in the comfort of your home or while doing day-to-day activities, such as housework.

How do you stay fit on a budget?

Here are a few frugal fitness ideas.

TELEVISION: There are plenty of fitness shows on television. Check your local programming for Exercise TV (www.exercisetv.tv) and FitTV (www.fittv.com). At the very least, do a few sit-ups, ride a stationary bike, or sit on a stability ball while watching your favorite shows. Or do a few kickbacks, crunches or squats, or walk or march in place during commercials.

VIDEOS: Borrow DVDs from your local library or download routines onto your computer or iPod from www.myyogaonline.com or iTunes, and www.coolrunning.com has a couch-to-5k program that gives beginner runners a routine. Don’t forget to look for fitness videos at thrift stores, garage sales, eBay, Freecycle and Craigslist, too.

MAGAZINES: Go to the library, and photocopy exercise routines from fitness magazines, or raid magazines from family and friends. One reader, Gina in Massachusetts, shares: “I’ve been tearing out the routines from magazines for a few months now. I created binders of workouts for upper body, lower body and total body. I usually read the entire workout first, then I have it on the bench, floor or table next to me so I can take a quick glance at it if I need to. I have taped routines to the wall, too.” Or visit Web sites such as Prevention (www.prevention.com) or the American Council on Exercise (www.acefitness.org/exerciselibrary).

DUMBBELLS: Pick up a kettlebell or inexpensive pair of dumbbells, or create your own. Use stockpiled items such as bags of sugar or canned goods, or fill empty milk jugs with sand.

COMPANY SUPPORT: Ask whether your company offers health and wellness programs. Taking advantage of them can sometimes reduce your health-insurance premiums, too.

JUMP ROPE: Invest in a quality jump rope, and get your body moving. Be sure to get the right length of rope for your height. This is a great activity to share with the whole family. You can find weighted jump ropes, too.

RESISTANCE/STRETCH BANDS: Great for any age and easy to store. They can help you strengthen your muscles and increase your flexibility. They’re cheap, too.

START A GROUP: Create your own fitness group. You can work out together. Start a mall-walking schedule or share equipment. And speaking of walking, pet-walking counts. You can even walk around your house or stretch while talking on the phone. Having a buddy will help hold you accountable, and it’s a lot more fun.

GET A PEDOMETER: Strive for 10,000 steps. Set goals for yourself, and keep track of your progress. You can climb stairs at work or home, too. Buy a good pair of athletic shoes so you have support for walking, running, aerobics, etc. It is a great tool for learning how many steps you actually take and can encourage you to walk more.

WATER: Drink plenty of water, and be sure to get enough rest. Swim in water, too. Simple water aerobics can make a huge difference in how you feel. You can increase intensity as you progress, too.

  1. jumping jacks! Sounds silly, but it one exercise that works the most muscles! Plus, it is a cardio exercise! I do 50 to 100 a day! To do 50 jumping jacks takes less than 2 minutes.

  2. Hubby gave me a Wii Fit for my birthday. Though it cost $300 I will now cancel my $80/month health club membership! Since I joined the club in November 2008, I have paid a whopping $1,120! Plus the Wii Fit is SOOOO much more fun than going to the gym!!!

  5. Great advice on Exercise TV’s website. It is for sure a great place to check out workouts that are pretty quick. Also, like everything else with Exercise TV they are completely free.

  6. I just like any of the Wii games. Bowling gets you up and moving, the boxing can really get your heart rate up. Not to mention the laughing you end up doing while your trying to beat your kids at one of the games. We like doing them all as a family and have the Wii fit as well, just don’t use it that often. I am going to get the new Your Shape but I am not paying for it, signed up on houseparty.com and got picked as a host for a party and get it for free!
