Starbucks contest giveaway

Starbuckslogo Starbucks contest giveaway

I am an absolute coffee junkie. I don’t drink tons each day, but I do drink it daily and no one wants to see me on a day I go without it. Recently, Starbucks sent me some samples. I rarely accept products from companies. If I did, I wouldn’t be able to walk inside my house and I haven’t had time to write reviews in a few years. But since I haven’t tried Starbucks brewed at home and practically survive on coffee, I couldn’t resist. I thought it would be great to host a contest sponsored by Starbucks, so a couple of my readers could enjoy Starbucks coffee, too.

I like robust coffee, so the Breakfast blend was too mild for me as my daily coffee. I simply prefer a stronger roast to jump start my day. If you like a smooth and mellow coffee to sip with a light breakfast, you will find it quite enjoyable. They also sent me their House blend which I love. It’s a medium roast that is delicious and addictive. No exaggeration, I finished the last of it this morning and was tapping every last ground out of the bag and am disappointed that it’s gone. For the first time in years, I am considering switching from my regular coffee blend. I’m finding myself wanting to hop over to my local Starbucks or grocery store to get my fix.

Starbucks just expanded its packaged coffee portfolio sold in grocery stores. For people who want to try a new blend, but don’t want to commit to a larger size, there’s a new 5-ounce package size, and for those who have a favorite Starbucks coffee they already enjoy, the new 20-ounce size offers great value, penciling out to approximately 25 cents per cup! As an added bonus, to reward loyal Starbucks grocery shoppers, most coffee packages will include an offer for a free Tall (12-fluid ounce) brewed coffee at Starbucks locations when customers bring in their empty bag.

As I mentioned, Starbucks has sponsored this contest giveaway. Two random entries will each win two packages of Starbucks coffee and a French press. For your chance to win, simply enter a comment below that says you want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home. For an extra entry to win, share a coffee tip such as your favorite brewing method or share a coffee-brewing tip. Or if you’re already a Starbucks addict, tell me which blend you love in your comment. One entry per person unless you’re adding a coffee tip or favorite blend and then it will count as two entries.
Deadline to enter will be January 22, 2010 11:50pm.

Starbucks has also included the following helpful brewing tips.

Four Fundamentals for Brewing the Perfect Cup of Coffee
The recipe for a great cup of coffee includes four basic fundamentals: proportion, grind, water and freshness. Understanding and following the guidelines for each of them will ensure a great cup of coffee every time.

Proportion
The general rule for coffee-making is two tablespoons (10 grams) of ground coffee for each six ounces (180 milliliters) of water. Too few coffee grounds result in over-extracted or bitter coffee. Too many grounds result in under-extracted coffee that does not achieve the full flavor of the blend. Proportion is the most common coffee-making mistake – and the easiest mistake to correct.

Grind
Different brewing methods require different grinds. A grind that is too fine will trap water and result in a bitter, unpleasant brew. A grind that is too coarse leaves coffee weak and without distinguishing characteristics or flavors. Over-extracted coffee tastes much worse than under-extracted coffee, so when in doubt as to the brewing method, always err on the coarse side. Coffee connoisseurs agree that the best coffee – thick, rich and truest to its flavor profile – is made in a traditional coffee press. A coffee press requires a coarse grind.

Water
While it may not seem like an important ingredient, coffee is 98 percent water. The type of water used when brewing greatly affects the final taste. Always use clean, fresh water that is filtered or free of impurities – avoid soft water or well water. Water heated to just off the boil (195º-205ºF or 90º-96ºC) does the best job of extracting the coffee’s full range of flavors. Water that is too cool will mute the flavor and dull the coffee’s aroma.

Freshness
Coffee’s biggest enemies are oxygen and moisture. Always store coffee in an airtight container at room temperature. Storing coffee in the refrigerator or freezer can result in moisture from condensation and is not recommended for daily use. If coffee needs to be kept for more than two weeks without being used, store it in the freezer in an airtight container. Brewed coffee should always be stored in a thermal carafe and never left on the burner or reheated.

I had Starbucks this past weekend for the second time ever. I can’t remember the name of the first flavor I tried, but it was delicious. This past weekend I had the Breakfast Blend, and as someone who prefers a mild blend, I loved it. I will be buying some soon.

So, I guess you could say that I want to win Starbucks coffee! :)

I love Starbucks coffee and always have a pound of beans around to grind to use in my French press! Yummy! I really enjoy a bold bean like the Cafe Estima Blend, but I haven’t tried any blend that I don’t like. My husband visits Starbucks every morning. Awesome!

I want this. I LOOOOOVVVVVEEEE Starbucks. I have had to cutback on them and only have 1 coffee a week when I go grocery shopping instead of everyday. May need to check this out.

  6. Starbucks coffee! :) I’d love to win also. I haven’t had home-brewed Starbucks and would love to give it a try. As to tips for brewing, if you have hard water, you can add a small dash of salt to your grinds before you brew to take off the bitterness that is left by hard water… it tends to mellow the flavor of your coffee too, so be sure NOT to add too much.

    Happy New Year!

I hate to waste coffee, so I will make a full pot and then put what I don’t drink in a thermos. It can last me all day, and if it happens to cool off, I pour it in a coffee cup and nuke it… So nothing is wasted….

P.S. I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home. ;)

I make a pot of coffee and end up drinking it for two days sometimes. I just leave it in the pot and warm it up in the microwave. It is best the day before, but I still like it the next day! :)

  12. I drink espresso strength coffee every morning – a big mug’s worth. I make it through a drip filter right into the mug. I will drink it cold if I don’t finish, but also freeze leftovers in ice cube trays in the summer, to use to make drinks or iced coffee when it’s hot.

    32
  33. I’ve never even been in a Starbucks even though they are everywhere. I don’t like coffee shop coffee because it is always too strong but if I made my own I can make it weaker and still get the flavor.

    34
  35. The Starbuck’s Christmas Blend is my favorite. Please enter me in the giveaway for the Starbuck’s Coffee and a French Press.

    37
  38. Mmmm… you had me at Starbucks! :)

I’d love to win this prize!! I’m a Sbux addict and I have to say I love the Ethiopian Sidamo. Very good for iced coffee!

    38
  39. I’m not a coffee drinker and confess that I don’t particularly care for the smell either. I much prefer a no water soy chai tea latte when it comes to Starbucks. However, my husband LOVES coffee. Lately, he has been brewing it every day! His favorite: Starbucks Breakfast Blend Half-caff. All of the flavor without quite as much caffeine. This would be such a treat to win!

    39
  40. I want to win Starbucks coffee! My favorite brewing method is French Press, although I don’t do that nearly as often as I’d like. It makes a really great tasting cup of brew. My favorite blend of Starbucks, btw, is Verona. It’s rich and wonderful.

    40
  41. I would love to win Starbucks brew at home and a French Press! I’ve been wanting one for a couple of years now.

    41
  42. I want Starbucks coffee to brew at home!

**Funny coffee tip: if you run out of filters (like I do all the time) you can use a paper towel! Haha.

    42
  43. Love Starbucks!!! And would love to win the two plus a french press. We also love the Breakfast Blend Coffee. Our children say we might as well drink dirty dishwater because we like the coffee pretty weak.

    Thanks!

    43
  44. I love coffee!!! I, too, am not a happy camper when I go a morning without my cup (or 2 or 3) of coffee. My fave is Sumatra. I like coffee that has a bold taste – I need something to get my attention in the morning!

    44
  45. PatriciaSennett

I need to win as I need all the help with preparing coffee at home. I’ve used a percolater and tap water for far too long. My family has given up coffee at my house and I’d like to shock them with the best with using my winning prize of the French Press and Starbucks Homebrew. I promise to retire my old percolator and even use my new water filter system. Thank you. I’d like to have a sampling bar with creams, sugars and spices to serve coffee as dessert. My favorite flavored coffee is using Caramel ice cream topping and cream.

    45
  46. Corrin Simpson

I would love to win Starbucks coffee. My favorite! I love their Breakfast Blend. At the store though, I love White Mochas. I’m still trying to figure out how to make them at home.

  48. Love coffee….count me in

Also, for low cals….ask for a “skinny” when you order your drink at Star Bucks….sugar free and non fat milk…yummm

    48
  49. Verona is my fave blend of home brew Starbucks coffee. It’s bold but smooth, less acidic than some of the bolder brews.
I’m very interested in winning this contest and some coffee and press!

    49
  50. I want to win Starbucks to brew at home!
I love Starbucks brewed coffees. They give me the deep rich coffee flavor I crave without the bitterness of many other types. My favorite Starbucks varietal is Sumatra. I prefer varietals over flavored coffees.

My tip is to add a small sprinkle of fresh ground cinnamon over the coffee just before brewing. This is good especially for those who love a deep rich coffee like I do, as it helps smooth out the flaovor and gives an olefactory treat as one sips the cup of fresh hot brew.

    50
  51. I’d love to win my own Starbucks coffee, as I prefer to brew my own at home. One of my favorite ways to brew it, whether it’s a flavored coffee or not, is to toss a cinnamon stick into the grinder along with the beans and grind away. Love it!!

    51
  52. I want to win Starbucks at home!

I’m crazy about the Christmas blend – stock up on it every fall when it goes on sale. It is far and away my favorite!

Here’s my tip: If you haven’t tried a french press before it is definitely worth it. Especially if you like a fresh, strong flavor. Most regular at-home coffee makers do something to the grinds that just changes the flavor. Whereas a french press will give you hands down a consistently better cup of coffee. And it’s inexpensive too!

    52
  53. Michelle S.

I would love to win Starbucks for my home. I’m an addict: Breakfast Blend in the morning; House Blend in the afternoon. For a tip: remember to clean your coffee maker by running vinegar through it for a cycle once a month, rinsing by then running a plain water cycle. It makes a huge difference.

    53
  54. Pike’s is my favorite! I was ecstatic to find it at Target and with a deal that net the price down to $5.75 for a 12oz. bag I grabed the entire stock!!!

    54
  55. I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home. I cannot wait for the Holidays to come around and get their Peppermint Mocha plus I get to try new Holiday drinks that they have. With the economy in the shape it’s in, I have had to cut back on buying my Caffe Mocha and Coffee from them like I used to which was just about every day and I have started using the Starbucks House Blend which I make at home.

    55
  56. I would love to win Starbucks coffee!

    56
  57. My coffee tip!!!

Percolators violate most of the natural laws about brewing coffee.

Don’t over extract the oils and flavor. Percolators work by taking coffee and reheating it and throwing it over the grounds over and over and over again.

Never reheat/boil coffee. This destroys the flavor. For best flavor, boil the water, pass it over the grounds and retain the heat. Don’t reheat it.

Violating these rules may not sound like much, but these are about the only rules there are. The effect of a percolator is to keep passing boiling water/coffee over the grounds until there is no flavor left.

    57
  58. I would love to win Starbucks coffee! My grown daughters give me gift cards from Starbucks for Christmas, Birthdays and Mother’s Day because I’m absolutely addicted to the House Blend. Cold Northern evenings I take a few minutes of quiet time to enjoy a hot cup with a bit of hot chocolate mix added and sip the rich warmth. Truly a relaxing way to wind down and warm up!

I want to win some coffee to brew at home and a french press! Yummy!

My tip is if I don’t have flavored coffee at home, I just add a little vanilla to my grounds right before brewing. Tastes and smells good!

    59
  60. I like making it at home in a standard coffee maker— I really liked the Christmas blend but for the most part we enjoy Pike’s Place.

    60
  61. Christmas blend is my favorite too! I generally only buy Starbucks at

    68
  69. Diana Parson

Thank you Sara and Starbucks! Yes, I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home. My coffee tip is that I always brew a cup more than I think I will use. Then I freeze it as cubes, and later enjoy an iced coffee. Also when I brew, I often use double filters to make sure that no grounds come through. I have never tried Starbucks at home, but at the coffee shop I tried just the regular flavor and found it very smooth and full bodied.

    69

Now I get every nuance of Starbuck’s coffee flavor and it starts my day off well. Winning a couple pounds and a new press would make me very happy. Thanks for being there, Starbuck’s. I love your products.

I love coffee…I have a regular drip coffee maker that I use when my husband wants coffee, too. But my favorite way to brew coffee is on my Mukka Express (seen here: http://www.bialettishop.com/MukkaMain.htm) which makes enough for a large cup of wonderful java.

I would love to win the Starbucks giveaway…the secret to good coffee, imo, is Good coffee beans, ground in my burr grinder right before brewing. Yummm!

Thanks for this offer, excuse me now, I must go make some coffee.

    86

I never win anything but I hope I win this for my DH. He is a coffee hound. He drinks it cold,or warm, old or new. He would love it if I baked him a cake w/ Star Bucks coffee in it. His birthday is tomorrow and that would be an excellent gift for him.

I would love to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home. Thanks for the brewing tips, I love coffee but am terrible at making it.

  101. Well, I had my first Starbucks experience a few weeks ago – the worst coffee I ever had! I was going to say nothing and just leave but in the end I thought it only fair to say what I felt. I spoke to the manager who was very apologetic. It transpired that there had been a mistake and the coffee had been left on the hotplate too long. (Just what the above article says not to do!)
I was given my money back, although I did not ask for that, and also a voucher for a free coffee.
My next coffee there was lovely.

I have never bought Starbucks own coffee to use at home so it would be great to win some here so that I can try it.

I make my coffee in an Aeropress and think it is a wonderful gadget!

  103. I’d love to win Starbucks coffee too!

My favorite blend is the now discontinued Siren’s Note. Of their current offerings, I like the new Pike’s blend best.

    103
  104. I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home! I regularly buy it from the grocery store already, though that hasn’t stopped me from getting coffee made by experts at Starbucks! We love the Morning Blend and French Roast. Also, we prefer the French Press, but we’ve been drinking so much we use the pot so we decided we HAVE to buy another press, but maybe I’ll win?????

    104
  105. Starbucks bold roasts are all very good…Sumatra is excellent…Christmas Blend was good but suspect it is now off the shelves. French and Italian roast are also very good. If it says bold on the bag you can count on great strong taste and a kick. Each bold roast has its own subtle fragrance and flavor. Try them all!

    105
  106. I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home! I love coffee brewed the Brazilian way – pouring hot water over a coffee in a cloth filter.

My tip is a beauty tip: Save the used coffee grounds after brewing, add honey, and it makes an awesome skin scrub. The coffee grounds and honey will make your skin soft, and some say help with cellulite through rubbing.

    109
  110. I would love to own a coffee press. I’ve had visions of a coffee press dancing in my head for awhile, but haven’t had the spare money to buy. I prefer my coffee made in my k-cup single cup coffeemaker. A good bold grind with white chocolate macadameon (sp) creamer. Some days whip topping with cinnamon sprinkled on top.
    Sign me up plez!!!

I have only one cup of coffee a day. i need to make it count. Starbucks for sure. Also, when brewing, put a little cinnamon in the grinds and let it flavor the coffee as it brews

  113. I have never had the pleasure of having Starbucks coffee because we are on a very tight budget. I am a coffee addict and drink it all day long right up to bedtime. I would absolutely be tickled pink if I won this. I’m keeping my fingers crossed. Please pick me.

    113
  114. I would *love* to win Starbucks coffee for home. Would save me several trips in a week, I’d say. :)

Not so much a tip, but a help: I use the timer on my phone when I brew in my French Press. Some coffee shops sell “4-minute timers” just for that purpose, but who needs a uni-tasker? Starbucks coffee in my own press is a great way to start the morning.

    114
  115. Brenda McGrath

My husband and I drink Starbucks allthe time its great. We love to brew it at home and I use a old perculator pot. If you have a 12 cup pot as I have use 6 coffee scoops of coffee in it, always half the amount of coffee per size of the pot. Bring the coffee to a boil and let it perk for 10 minutes on medium heat. You will be suprised how good it taste. Enjoy your coffee as we do t is worth the wait perking it the old fashion way

    115
  116. I would love to win Starbucks coffee for home. Here in Chicago there are some days that are too cold to venture to my nearest starbucks and I have to brew it at home. My favorite drink is a grande americano with cream and sugar in the raw and my kids like apple juice in the summer and hot chocolate in the winter.

  121. Hi,

My favourite Starbucks drink is the caramel macciato

At home, we use a french press or a bodum. It’s a very corse ground coffee and tends to be pretty strong. We often add a French vanilla creamer to it.

We’re not daily drinkers, but when we do, it’s usually a flavored coffee.

    Cheers

  122. I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home!

My husband and I were taking a 3 day trip to the Kennedy Space Center in Florida and I told him we had to stop at Starbucks for my morning coffee. It is wonderful!!!! A great way to start my day.

    Happy New Year!

    122
  123. I love the Peppermint Mocha offered at the holidays! I work from home so home-brew is the way I go. I’m thankful that I don’t have a daily commute as I’d go broke!

    Happy New Year!

    123
  124. I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home! Definitely!

I am “addicted” to the mocha Frappuccino in the bottles and have collected a bazillion of the empty bottles. Also have discovered that you can make a reasonable facsimile at home doing a double brew technique in a drip coffee maker, adding milk, sugar, and cocoa. To make it even more frugal, I use powdered milk!

So, there you go – my request AND a tip! With a Starbuck’s favorite flavor thrown in for good measure!

    124
  125. I want to win the Starbucks coffee to brew at home. My Starbucks brewing techniques:
    1) Tell the Starbucks cashier the details of your coffee maker (paper filter, gold tone; flat bottom coffee basket, etc) for the proper grind; and
    2) I use 2 heaping T of ground coffee for 3 C of brewed coffee. Following the package instructions makes the brew way too strong for my taste.
    Thanks!

    125
  126. I would love to win! This would be great for us!

    126
  127. We keep starbuck flavors syrups on hand at home. You can buy them right at starbucks and they are pretty reasonable.

    127
  128. I want to win Starbucks Coffee to brew at home.

    128
  129. The flavored syrups are the best. I use them on Sunday at Sunday School before service. My friends love them. a few have bought them also.

    129
  130. I’ve got a hankerin’ & sure would like to win Starbucks’ Coffee to brew at home.
My coffee is better than ever since I started using a simple French Press with coarse grind & let the boiling water in my electric kettle sit for about 30 seconds with the lid open so the temperature can drop well below boiling before adding it to the Press.

    130
  131. I love Starbucks! Breakfast Blend is my favorite and would love to win the contest!

    131
  132. We have a Starbucks in our Barnes & Noble store as soon as you open the door – it smells wonderful. I don’t think I’d go in there as often if it didn’t smell so great. I’ve had Starbucks there, but haven’t had it at home. We love coffee, go through 12 cup carafe a day (for 2 people). I would love to brew it at home.

tip – this holiday season, I added just a small amount, maybe a 1/4 teaspoon of cinnamon to coffee grounds for a subtle holiday taste.

    132
  133. I would love to win some Starbucks coffee!
I have recently re-learned how to make macchiatos, etc., with my espresso machine, which had been sitting in my kitchen for a few years, untouched.
My 7-year-old daughter also loves it when I make her a special drink, after I make my latte. I make her a steamed milk with whipped cream and chocolate sprinkles on top.

    136
  137. I would love to try the Breakfast Blend. I love coffee, but not super strong.
Here’s my tip. Mix cocoa into the coffee for for delicious change. Easy homemade mocha! If you have whipped cream and chocolate sauce for the top, even better! Try coffee creamer in it, too. That makes it even creamier!

    137
  138. I prefer the rich taste of Starbucks coffee. I don’t know why anyone could actually call Tim Horten’s coffee, real coffee; it’s so weak tasting!

I would love to win the Breakfast Blend and a French Press to go with it as the plunger on our old one just broke 2 days ago…from overuse I imagine.

    Starbucks coffee is the best!

    138
  139. Love, love, love their pumpkin spice coffees!

I want to win Starbucks coffee to brew at home. My coffee tip is to make sure to use filtered water for the best tasting coffee. 179. Our new coffee maker has a ‘strong brew’ button. Using that button has saved me nearly 50% in coffee costs, as I use only half the amount of coffee I normally would use to brew the pot. I don’t know what it does exactly, but it works. Check your coffeemakers to see if you also have that button. I think we have a Mr. Coffee.

    179
  180. I would love to win Starbucks to make at home. Thanks for the chance!

    180
  181. My tip would be to turn off your coffee maker as soon as it is finished brewing. If you leave it on and the you don’t drink your coffee right away, you will burn your coffee. If you turn it off, you can pour your coffee in a thermos and keep it warm for hours or heat up a cup later in the microwave. Nothing tastes as good as fresh brewed, but those of us who are greatly frugal will appreciate this tip!

    181
  182. Recently bought the new Starbucks instant coffee packets & my hubby loves them! He keeps the packets in his office so he always has some good coffee.

    198
  199. I would love to win the Starbucks coffee! My coffee tip is to use a coffee grinder and grind whole beans fresh when you make your coffee. It makes the coffee more aromatic and whole beans keep better than ground. As an added bonus, your coffee grinder can double as a spice grinder and be used to make powder sugar if you’re run out and you’re in a pinch!

  209. I can’t make it through the morning without my Starbucks Italian Roast coffee, ground for a gold cone filter. I’ve found that using the gold cone (I have a Cuisinart coffee maker) instead of a paper filter makes for a more robust brew– and it’s more eco friendly! You can even use the leftover grounds for compost.

I have not yet met a Starbucks coffee that I didn’t like, well, the breakfast blend is a little too light for me. Tarrazo is my favorite. 213. I would love to win this!

Coffee tip: Always freeze coffee and grind only right before using it. The oils evaporate from the bean when you grind it and that is why coffee goes bad with that awful taste. So keep oils in as long as possible :)

  214. YUM! I would love to win some Starbucks to brew at home! My new year’s resolution included giving up soda pop so I’ve been making more coffee at home.

    214
  215. Coffee is my energy and I just shattered my french press in the sink! I’d love to win some starbucks beans and have the opportunity to replace my old press. My favorite flavor is Columbian

Coffee Tip: Sweeten your coffee with just a scoop of whipped cream instead of coffee creamer. If you don’t like diluting the robust flavor of fresh brewed beans, just sweeten it up a touch with whipped cream as to just get a taste as it touches your lips-DELICIOUS!

    215
  216. I would like to win the Starbucks coffee

My coffee tip: A clean pot. Sounds simple enough but a lot of people don’t clean the pot as often as they should. A quick rinse isn’t enough. Give the pot a good clean out and you will taste the difference.
