It might cost $50 or so to get a membership to a big box store, but you’ll recoup that money if you take advantage of savings on the items you buy most. Stock up on nonperishables a few times a year and take advantage of savings on meat and frozen goods – you might even consider buying a deep freezer to store your bulk foods.

2. Think about ditching your car.

If you live in a city or a place with a good public transportation system, you might be able to get by without owning a car. The average cost to own and maintain a car is nearly $9,000 per year. Think about whether you can get to the places you need to go using public transportation or by walking or biking. There are also plenty of ride share apps and other options in most cities.

3. Consider buying used when possible.

When it comes to things like clothing, don’t think of it as used – think of it as pre-owned. You can save a lot of money on clothes, especially brand names, by shopping at thrift stores or consignment shops. You can also purchase used household goods and furniture to save money. Take advantage of Facebook groups and mobile apps to find the items you need at a discount.

4. Learn to do things yourself.

When something breaks down or wears out in your home, how much do you spend to hire someone to fix it? Many household repairs can be done yourself, all you need is a little DIY knowledge. Take advantage of free classes at home improvement stores or watch Youtube videos to learn how to do something yourself before you resort to hiring someone.

5. Prep your meals for the week.

Many people spend hundreds of dollars a month buying lunch or going out to dinner. You can save that money by preparing your own meals. If you worry that you don’t have time, you’ll be glad to know that you can prep all of your lunches or dinners for the week in just an hour or two over the weekend. Choose meals that are easy to make in large quantities like rice, steamed veggies, grilled chicken, and the like.

6. Stay active.

Getting regular exercise is important for your health and wellness, but it is also good for your wallet. The more active you are, the healthier you will be and that will help you to save money on your insurance premium as well as out-of-pocket medical expenses. Talk to your doctor about starting a diet or exercise program to improve your fitness and then make an effort to keep up with healthy habits.
