(Old thread, but I just found it. It's worth a bump, since it's apple season.)

I can't believe that no one has mentioned the Gravenstein. Absolutely the best apple for eating or for pies.

Of the better known commercial varieties, Spartan is my favourite.

We have two trees of Gravensteins, one of Spartans and one of Transparents, which are good for making sauce. We want to plant some heritage varieties, though we haven't made up our minds which ones yet.

When I first got my dehydrator I purchased every kind of apple available and tested them dehydrated for snacking and everyone picked Jonathan apples because they stayed nice and sweet. So it's Jonathan apples for dehydrating, and I like Granny Smith for out-of-hand eating and cooking.

Gala apples are our favorite. They are a cross between an apple and pear and so sweet!

I've tried lots -- Jonathans, Honeycrisp, Fiji, Gala, etc, etc,. , and I always come back to Granny Smith. I have one in the fridge at work tonight for supper in a few minutes!

I did not eat apples until I was grown and away at college. My father would eat only Red Delicious so that was all we ever had in the house, and I did not like them at all. It was wonderful to discover the world of apples out there waiting. To discover that apples could be oh, so good.

Lately we have been buying Gala or Fuji apples. I love honeycrisp and I also like Johnagold, Granny Smith, and golden delicious.
My least favorite is red delicious. They are not crisp enough for me.
Oh, and since I grew up in Washington State and parents now live in apple country, I look for Washington Apples.

I only like Fuji and Pink Lady for eating (raw).

There is nothing more disheartening than biting into a mealy apple. Yuck.

No red delicious or gala for me!
