My FIL lost 50+ lbs on this diet but then gained it all back. It makes me nervous to think of what this diet could do to a person's body long term, but has anyone tried it as a "jump-start" technique?

View Full Version : Has anyone tried the Atkins diet? Michelle 12-04-2002, 10:39 PM My FIL lost 50+ lbs on this diet but then gained it all back. It makes me nervous to think of what this diet could do to a person's body long term, but has anyone tried it as a "jump-start" technique? mrscornbread 12-04-2002, 11:30 PM I am trying this now, I started on Monday. I work with a gal who uses this diet and has lost a considerable amount of weight, you have to make a lifestyle change or you will gain it all back. I would rather make a lifestyle change than #1...Be unhealthy and #2 be fat and feel awful about myself like I have for so long in the past. This diet is one that you must make a commitment to and stick to it. dz_blonde_girl 12-05-2002, 09:38 AM There's another weight loss program available that is nutrition based. I am using it while pregnant to help with blood sugar, fluid balance and general good nutrition. I feel really good, not so tired anymore. I know a guy who lost 48# in around 3 months and has kept it off for 4 years now. You can PM me or visit www.newhealthyou.com for more stories or info. Michelle 12-05-2002, 10:00 AM I just wish I could find something healthy and stick with it. I'm so tired of being overweight, and I'd really like to feel good about myself. Unfortunately, I love to eat, and the things I love to eat are not considered healthy by any stretch of the imagination. I also don't like to exercise. Am I destined to be overweight forever? Probably. :( KathiS 12-09-2002, 05:47 AM I love food. It's just that simple! Now I have type 2 Diabetes and I have to stay on a low carb diet or risk some really severe complications. It is really tough. I wish I had been more careful in my eating habits earlier in my life. Diabetes in hereditary in my family but, I could have held it off a little longer. Labontet 12-27-2002, 11:17 PM About 5 years ago I did my own version of the Atkins diet. I guess it is really more like "Sugar Busters" I basically quit eating white starches, sugar and fruit. I lost 50 pounds in 6 months. But of course, I quit eating like I had been and gained back 20 pounds. CountryMom 12-28-2002, 10:15 AM I have done Atkins before and am starting it again today. The "forever" thing always got to me too. This time I am planning on starting with Atkins and eventually switching to a mixture of Sommersizing and CAD (carbohydrates addict diet). With Sommersize you can eat some carbs and fruit, but not with protein and with CAD you can have any carb as a part of your reward meal. I can live with occationally being able to have a dessert with my reward meal. toile 12-28-2002, 10:52 AM I recently lost 15 pounds in 6 weeks on Atkins. I took a break for thanksgiving till now and did gain about 3 pounds. I love the way the diet made me feel. It also seemed to cure my mood swings and acne? But I cant do it everyday. Im going to get off Atkins and back on through the year. Thats my plan anyway LOL. Another thing I sort of learned by mistake on that diet is just to eat less. I have days where I eat ( pms ;) then after I try to go for a while eating very little. It seems to help. I also work out now and lift weights. On good days I work out twice or walk twice. On bad days I squeezin in one work out. I like to work out while watching TV or I cant go very long. If you do Atkins let me know. I would love to get some ideas and tips. I usually live in pepporini slices beacuse I love them LOL. But new ideas would be greart. Im bored with eggs etc.. :toothy: Patchworkgirl 12-28-2002, 05:32 PM My husband has lost lots of weight several times with Atkins. High protein is bad for your kidneys long term. I'd rather do a healthier approach such as the Zone diet, which is low carbs, lean protein, and lots of veggies, whole grain pastas and brown rice. Much more sensible. |
