I've always wanted to do this, and I'm wondering if this is something I can teach myself or if it's something I'm better off learing from someone else (though I don't know who that would be at this point!)

I taught my self.. Nothing too it. just remember to take your time, expect mistakes and you can do it too. trust me if i can do it you can. really pay attention to what you are doing so you don't find your mistakes at the beginning and your at the end. ripping out several rows sucks.

I am still learning and I found it not difficult, but frustrating without someone teaching.
My biggest problem is I am not certain if my stitches are accurate, so I can crochet away for days, but not know if my stitch is right. :(
I'm considering getting a crochet video. I think that would help out any problems I have been having.

I'd get yourself your supplies and try it. I really enjoy making my blanket and learning stitches.

For those who are self taught - are there any books you can suggest for beginners?
