View Full Version : Slimfast anyone?
~Sherry~ 12-24-2002, 12:25 AM Does or has anyone ever used Slimfast?
I am wanting to lose weight and wonder if this would be a way to do it?
Maybe this combined with something else?
Does it really work?
Anyone have any insight into the world of Slimfast?
aylasmommy 12-24-2002, 12:25 AM well, i have tried it before, and they aren't that tasty, they are full of what was it sugar, or corn syrup? I know it was something that wasn't what I wanted to be putting in my body consistantly :(
Also they are pretty high in calories for that small amount(at least to me it was)..I personally need to eat something crunchy/chewable to satisfy my hunger ;)
But I do hear about some people doing good with slimfast, it's just not something that worked for me..I'd rather fill up on a bowl of wheaties w/ milk and some raisins for about the same calories as a slimfast shake would have :D
judith 12-25-2002, 06:53 PM Cappucino Delight is good. I used to have it for breakfast when I was working in food service. Stay away from the wal-mart brand though, I bought some for my dh and one of our friends, and they both got serious 'lower tummy' troubles from it, IYKWIM... Granted, they lost some weight, but that's not the way I want to lose it.
For me, I am working on eating a single-serving, sensible breakfast every day, re-dedicating to my work out program, and being more concious about what I put into my body, as well as being more active. Slim fast is temporary, I want to make changes FOREVER...
Just my 2 cents worth...
heaven 12-25-2002, 08:20 PM My friend calls it slim slow. LOL. keiko was doing it for a while and she did pretty well. she did the walmart brand and was fine with it. I think as long as you eat sensably and drink your water it should work. JMHO. GOOD LUCK.
captclearance 12-26-2002, 12:33 PM They are expensive and they contain at least 300 calories, you could have a senable meal for less than 300 calories and have that "I'm still hungry feeling " you get with those shakes..... They are a waste in my opinion......
debbiepete 12-26-2002, 12:40 PM My husband runs 3 miles daily and body builds. He takes 1 for lunch daily and says they work great.
TheCottageRose 12-26-2002, 02:22 PM All the sugar sets you up to release insulin in higher levels, thus storing more body fat.
sounds nutz I know, but such a high glycemic meal, being liquid and fast absorbing, isn't really good for weight loss, unless you eat a large serving of cottage cheeze or other high protiens to balance it out.
Plus the sugar carbs will make you sluggish. Protien actually sharpens the mind.
When your muscles get larger from being used and strong they will burn more calories than fat burns.
When you are keeping low body fat, then a hig carb drink like Slimfast (or maybe half for a woman) before a good work out, will be all you need to provide the extra calories for that work out....but so would a fruit smoothy.
Then after the workout you want to do protien....like a half cup of cottage cheeze or even half a protien bar.
QuilterMom 12-27-2002, 05:05 PM I have tried it before and the taste wasn't bad (I used the chocolate powder), but it is full of aspartame (I believe that's the one) and I got headaches from it.
vigilant20 03-14-2009, 08:07 PM I'm thinking of giving it a try. I did it once maybe 8 years ago with good success. But like usual as soon as I hit my goal and stopped calorie counting I gained everything back.
I picked up some cans at SAMs the other day. I thought it would be a good thing to keep in my desk at work as a backup for when I forget my lunch. It's certainly cheaper than going to the cafeteria to eat. I had forgotten how good these shakes taste! I stopped back this morning and picked up the powder because it's cheaper to mix up.
I'm unsure if I want to use them all the time or just use them as backups when I don't have time for breakfast or forget my lunch. We'll see.
Michelle 03-14-2009, 11:41 PM I frequently drink the Easy to Digest Slim Fast shakes (they're lactose-free and gluten-free) for breakfast. They're delicious. :lip:

Hmm expensive, yes, but the ones I drink only have 180 calories.
thefrug 03-15-2009, 09:17 AM I tried this stuff 20 yrs ago. I lost like 10-12lbs. Then I had to stop ( money issues) and got so bound up!!! OMG. Had to go the ExLax route. Never again. Balanced, healthy eating with exercise 4 days a week and one day a splurge day. Thats what works. ;)
oh, and if you put it in the blender with some ice cubes and mix it, it froths up and is more filling.....for a little while anyways. didn't try yogurt in with it tho, so it might work better.

Yes! I experienced the exact same thing on this stuff! The pain was terrible!! Never again is right!

I would guess the recipe is totally different now. I didn't notice any issues last time (I lost 30 pounds). I was actually just wondering to myself if there's some sort of laxative in them because I've been going more than usual.
I followed the plan yesterday to test it out, and I was down 3 pounds this morning.
tamiky 03-15-2009, 09:16 PM I love them for brekfast. I just throw them in the blender with ice cubes and skim milk. Tasty!

Unless they changed it since last August????
HandyMom 03-15-2009, 11:30 PM I also lost 30# using the powder mixed with milk. I skip breakfast and so this helped me to spread my eating out more evenly rather than being ravenous at dinnertime and afterwards.
pop goes the weasel 03-16-2009, 07:21 AM I actually gained weight with them . Of course that was my fault I liked them so well I over indulged lol, My MIL swears by them though
vigilant20 03-16-2009, 08:13 AM Unless they changed it since last August????
Well that's weird. They must just affect you differently.
I'm another pound down this morning :)

read my post. I said I had to stop drinking them and thats when I got bound up. Not when I was drinking it. ;)
congrates on the 30lbs! and now the 3!
Momto2Boyz 03-16-2009, 09:24 AM I've tried it before and have never had any luck with it. I guess in my mind, drinking my breakfast and lunch just doesn't work...becuase my brain tells me I'm hungry again shortly after drinking it.
Here is what I have been doing lately and it's been working really well: I've been drinking K20 protein water (from special K). I drink one before breakfast and before lunch, then again for an afternoon snack. Each one is only 30-50 calories (depending on the flavor) and they have protein and fiber in them that actually fills you up. So by drinking them before my meal, and drinking one in the afternoon, I am eating far less at my meals, and the afternoon one keeps me full until dinner. And this way, I can still have the act of eating, but I don't eat nearly as much becuase I'm not hungry when I start my meal, becuase of the protien water!
onencgirl 03-16-2009, 10:33 AM To me Slim Fast was just a snack. lol I was still hungry after drinking them.
Michelle 03-16-2009, 10:48 AM They fill me up for about 3 hrs or so. I drank one at 6:30 this morning, and I'm hungry for a snack now.
madhen 03-16-2009, 10:51 AM I tried them for a while, but didn't notice a lot of difference. I liked to freeze them, then eat them like slushies. :)

That sounds right. If you follow the plan you are supposed to eat snack bars with a fruit or veggie in between meals.
forHISglory 03-16-2009, 11:13 AM I tried them years ago, and they didn't taste bad. But I like the sensation of chewing something, and the shakes just didn't deliver.
vigilant20 03-20-2009, 11:13 AM I ended up losing 3 more pounds for a total of 6 this week :) Yay! The powered shakes taste way better than the same flavor of canned shake...I wonder why that is? I think I may pick up some meal bars soon for a little variety and something to chew on.

:yeah: I need real food, lol. Seems like I quoted & agreed with you on something else recently. :)
I tried them years ago & they didn't fill me up or make me happy or lose weight. Good old mantra of drink lots of water, eat real food in normal portions and keep on moving my rear end is what works for me. Oh one more thought, I'm really not liking how long it takes for that scale to budge down as I get older.
xtena 03-20-2009, 03:36 PM To the person who is 'going' more often: check the label. If it has maltitol or other fake sugars ending in 'ol' that's probably the cause. Maltitol, especially is notorious for its laxative effect.
I only ever tried Slimfast 20 years ago, before they had the lower carb versions, so it was basically like a sugary chocolate vitamin shake. Didn't fill me up; I'd be ravenous after two hours so I gave up after a week and didn't lose a single pound.

No -ols in the can, which is all I have left at my desk to check. I think it's probably just the sudden increase in dairy, which can have the same effect :)
The new ones do help keep you fuller longer. But even if you were full for 2 hours...that would be fine because you are supposed to eat snacks at that point (they suggest a snack bar and a fruit or vegetable)
banana 03-20-2009, 06:20 PM I tried slim fast many years ago and had success. I liked the way it tasted. I just lost 27 lbs without slimfast. I just really watched what I ate and counted as many of my calories as I could. Also drink at least 8 glasses of water a day.
frugal.lass 03-27-2009, 02:08 PM I personally like the taste of the chocolate ones but if you take a look at the high level of sugar/carbs...it's really not a great choice for weightloss. I would recommend going the high fiber route, it's more filling, more nutritious and in the long run, you'll acquire better habits than you would with slimfast.
I buy the powder every so often (maybe 3 cans a year??) just because there are times when I'm running between flights and literally have 2 minutes to get calories in me. I always have access to milk so if I carry some powder, I can just mix up a shake to tide me over until we land and I can find a restaurant.
Michelle, not sure if someone already pointed the calorie difference out to you (didn't read the full thread) but the 180 calories you're referring to is probably for the powder alone. You're supposed to mix it with 2% milk (in order to get enough fat/calories each day) and that bumps it to over 300 calories per drink.

The cans are 180. The powder is 110 alone, and 200 with the suggested nonfat milk. http://www.slim-fast.com/products/products.aspx

Actually, the 180 calories are for the ones that are already mixed (and not with milk). I drink the easy to digest/gluten free shakes (in the cans). I don't use the powder :)

The easily digested cans are 180, lower because they don't contain milk, I suspect. The regular cans are 220ish, I believe I read (and contain milk).
Thanks for posting that info. I was just reading it myself LOL
MyMelody 03-29-2009, 10:07 PM I lost about 10 lbs before my wedding with Slim-Fast, but I don't think I could ever do it again. I'm convinced that I only succeeded because I was desperate to rid myself of flab before my wedding day!
I had the cappuccino shake for breakfast, a chocolate or vanilla for lunch (I hate the strawberry) along with a 100 calorie "something" (yogurt, fruit, etc), a Slim Fast snack bar around 2 pm (the muffin ones don't taste as good as the candy bar clones, but they seem more filling), and then a small portion of something healthy or a low-cal frozen dinner. It goes w/o saying that I downed water like there was no tomorrow, because I was constantly hungry. I also used the South Beach Tropical flavor powder in my water (similar to K2O -- has fiber and protein). I walked 3 miles 5 times a week and did crunches, lunges, and weights for my arms. The reason I say I could never do it again is cost and lack of variety. After a while, you get tired of just "sweet.'
I'm having more success now with eating foods high in fiber and protein, drinking my water, and watching simple carbs. It's more flexible for my work and home needs, and I need something I can use for a lifetime, KWIM?
