If so, how?

We participate in the Ufund, as does my FIL who also has money taken out of his check for the girls' college fund.

I'm here to tell ya, if you're children are young please save for it. We didn't, we just did it the hard way. Pay as you go. :( Man I mean to tell ya it was NOT easy. We'd be eating beans 3 days a week so we could make those tuition and housing payments. If your kids are close in age I would consider buying a rent house in the college town of your choice. That way you could pay housing and it would be MUCH more of an investment. Just an idea. I wish, wish, wish we had done this.

I will save for college if I ever get enough saved for retirement. If it doesn't happen it doesn't.

We plan on having the kids pay for themselves, and if we can help a little. I paid for mine, and got a degree, by bother got his paid for and after 5 years he dropped out.

So I am in the "pay for yourself" school. DS the first born is in 3rd grade and we are already getting in his brain to get good grades so you can get a scholership(I am not a spelling major:D )

So hopefully he(and the girls) won't even get it in thier head that mom and dad will pay, and if we do it will be a nice suprize.

We have education IRAs for the girls, and I have some money in a savings account from an inheritance that I plan to use toward their college expenses, but I will admit that I am feeling like it is impossible to *really* save enough. I used one of those "this is how much you should be saving each month" calculators, and according to those numbers, we should be SAVING $1500/month to fund our kids' college educations. We do NOT have the kind of income to support that level of saving.

Then there's the whole retirement issue. I read somewhere that "There are no scholarships to fund your retirement" and that really struck me. I want to provide for my kids' education, but not at the expense of our quality of life in our "golden years".

So, we'll save what we can(NOT $1500/month) and hope that they are smart and/or athletic and qualify for LOTS of scholarships.

We are in the middle of college here. Oldest is in her 4th year of a 5 year plan, and next daughter is starting in the fall. We did not save a penny- didn't have the money to all the years they were growing up. We pay about 1/2, and she takes out loans for the other half. All the kids will be this way. However, if they all go to college, I will be paying for the next 8 years. This has put a definite strain on our budget, but money well spent.

We'll put away whatever we can but I rather save money for us when we retire because we will not be getting scholarships or loans at that time. For our children, just like for us, there will be part time jobs, grants, scholarships, and mom's and dad's help. I will stress going to a state university since they are much cheaper and if possible to stay in the same city as us so there will be no need for room and board.

We had savings for both our girls, but here in Louisiana college is paid by the state if you maintain a 3.5 GPA. So Krystals college has been totally free so far.

My mom and dad started accounts for each of the kids that we all pay into for their college funds. We will pay for part of it and help the kids in applying for scholarships and loans to pay part themselves.

I'm sorry, but if my kids want to go to college, they can earn good grades and get scholorships- they'll appreciate it more that way. I can promise you the kids who do nothing but drink, smoke weed and flunk out aren't the ones paying for themselves. We don't even have the money to save for retirement, much less college. Where I come from- you either join the military upon graduation or bust your butt for everything you own. No one in this household has ever been handed anything- and it won't be any different for my kids.

We got a prepaid college program for the kids. That's the only gift I will leave to my kids, a college education. I plan to enjoy my retirement. No inheritance for these kids. LOL.
