View Full Version : Where Did You Get Your Pets?
KathiS 01-30-2003, 05:32 AM Where did you get your pets? We got Xena from our DD's neighbor. We just loved Xena's mother and father and decided we wanted one of their puppies. Boogie was adopted from a family that was giving kittens away in front of a Safeway market. Our DS brought her home. She was the last kitten left and they were going to take her to the pound. I adopted Jezabell and her sister from the local ASCA. Jezabell's sister died of liver disease at an early age. Your turn.....:paw: :paw: :paw:
SewCrafty 01-30-2003, 08:12 AM This is gonna be long! LOL
My first pet was Peachie my dawg, she was my best friend. We adopted her from a local vet when she was a puppy. She was a fox terrier/husky mix. She passed away a little over 2 years ago due to kidney failure, she was 12 years old.
Then comes Bubbie, she was a kitten at the time and climbed up my leg while getting into my car at work one night. I couldn't leave her there (RR) she was heading towards moving engines. BTW - DON"T drive 35 miles with a kitten not in a carrier!! LOL
Squeaky, Nicky, Snowy, Pepe, Prissy, Olga, Toby and Ralphie were all strays or abandon by their mama's. Olga and Toby were critically ill when I brought them in. Prissy I bottle fed for about a month.
Mama kitty was our neighbors. They left him to die while they went to Europe for the summer. I thought it was a VERY pregnant female (hence the name) until I took him to the vet and found out he had cancer pretty bad. They told me he wouldn't last only a few days. He was with us for 2 1/2 years.
(Natasha) Tashi was my baby. Her mama abandoned her when she was about 2-3 days old, she didn't even have fur on her paws yet and barely opened her eyes. I bottle fed her too. She would use me for a tree and climb up on my shoulder. Many times I did dishes or housework with Tashi on my shoulder. As soon as she heard the microwave she thought it was dinner time!! To make a long story short, she climbed in bed with me one night and I suffocated her. She ended up with brain damage but did live longer than they thought, about 7 months. She passed away last Memorial Day.
babynurse 01-30-2003, 08:21 AM Diana, you sure are a special lady for rescuing all your babies! And sorry about Tashi, that must have been hard!
halo475 01-30-2003, 08:32 AM I was listening to the radio one Saturday about 5 years ago and they broke into the music for a lady who called in. She wass asking for help as she had found a litter of kittens whose Mama had unfortunately gotten killed by a car. She had had them for about 2 weeks and they were up and moving around and eating well, but she was pleading for help, because she could not keep 7 kittens as she already had 11 cats of her own-Mostly rescued strays.
She gave her phone number over the air, I called her and went down to meet her and see the kittens. They were oh so tiny-they fit in the palm of my hand!! I went there with the intention of getting one, but there were 2 left and well we couldn't decide which one, so we took them both. They were all curled up together and so cute. I couldn't leave just one!!;) So that's how I ended up with my 2 older cats.
The kitten we have also came from a stray. We had a feral cat that had 2 litters of kittens out in our back shed. We tried and tried to catch her to have her spayed, but she was a wiley one. We took her kittens from her both times, as we did not want a feral colony of cats here. The first litter I resisted keeping one, and found good homes for all of them. But that second litter!! There were 4 of them-3 of them were orange and white tabby boys. 1 of them was the most beautiful calico female and well she just stole my heart. She is long haired (I said I would NEVER have a long haired cat again ;) ) and just the most wonderful kitten!! I have never regretted keeping her (well maybe once in awhile when she wakes me up at 5:00 and wants attention!! LOL)
Unfortunately or Furtunately-whichever way you look at it, the Mama cat was killed in the road not long after her last litter.
So that's the stories of how I came to be a 3 cat family. As for all the other pets I have, that for another day!! :D
SewCrafty 01-30-2003, 09:20 AM Thanks Theresa, yes it was extremely difficult. Tashi was my baby, I still find myself talking to her and Peachie and Mama sometimes. I miss them a lot.
Mom23boys 01-30-2003, 10:54 AM I helped delivery Socks, our cat. His mother was having troubles and could not push him out. Finally after being in labor forever it seemed and the cat be partially out, when she pushed I pulled him out. It was really quick. We got his mom from a friend. She passed away last year, but we still have her baby.
Then we have crabby, the hermit crab. We brought him back from the beach last year. We bought him at a store located on the beach.
QuilterMom 01-30-2003, 02:23 PM Our two oldest Australian Shepherds came from breeders. They are 7 weeks apart in age. Our youngest Aussie came from the Aussie rescue program - we adopted him last September.
voodidit 01-30-2003, 07:07 PM Vooditit and Nosey we adopted from the pound, Voodidit first, she was about 6 weeks old and hanging on the screen when we went it, there was no way I was leaving without her. We went back 6 months later and found Nosey, the exact opposite, she was about the same age, 6 weeks, but she was in a ball in the back of the cage scared to death. I had to have her, she shook all the way home and hid for a week, she is still my shy girl all 20 pounds of her..lol. It took a 6 months before she would let anyone but me pet her and was over a year before my parents beleived we had another cat because she hid whenever anyone came in the house. She is now 8 1/2 and is still very shy with most people and will hide when people come over.
My dh said 2 cats are enough, then one day he went out to his grandmas to pick up some clothes, he was back in 10 minutes with a scrawny little kitten. He claims, he opened the car door and he just jumped in his lap, what else could he do but bring him home...lol... it took several months to convince this cat that he did not have to eat everything in sight. I had sat some stew meat on the counter and left the room for about a minute, by the time I came back he had ripped it open and was tearing through the house with the meat. He would knoeck the lid off the crock pot, I finally had to tape it on. I guess living on the street it took him a whike to realize he no longer had to steal food to live.
Roscoe, our little dog, my dh brought him home too. He had been visiting friends and seen a dog wandering in the parking lot of the apartment complex. The people he was visiting said that the dogs owners had moved and left him so they had been feeding him. Of course dh had to bring him home. He's a great dog, his owners loved him enough to have him fixed but not enough to take him with them when he moved.
Roxanne is the last survivor of a litter I adopted in 1987. Their mom was a show cat that had gotten out of the house once. The owner wanted to have the kittens aborted. I begged her not to and told her I would take any and all babies. She gave me all three (Kiefer passed away within two months. Sydney just passed away in 2000).
Mephistopholes was found in a dumpster by a friend of mine. She was in a plastic bag with her siblings, but she was the only one still alive.
Most the time, I get my pets from the pound. The rest of my pets are feral cats and a pack of stray dogs. I feed them but they are not open to getting close to people.
Lori Biever-Launder 01-31-2003, 12:02 AM My first dog as an adult was Sasha, a Lab/Boxer/Pit mix. We bought her from some idiots (yes, they really were!) for $10.00. we had her for a month shy of 16 years. She was wonderful with everyone.
Our first two cats, Athena and Aphrodite, were picked out of the newspaper. Scruffy was a stray who picked US. She was dumped by our neighbors, who moved during an ice storn and left her. We had her for three years until she died. sneakers (AKA Doodles) was one of our neighbor's mama cat's litter. He was my fuzzy boy for fifteen years!
I bought Gypsy, my Am Staff from a reputable breeder. Sophie was a rescue from my vet's office.
Lori Biever-Launder 01-31-2003, 12:04 AM BTW, NEVER, EVER, EVER, BUT A PUPPY OR KITTEN FROM A PET STORE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! These are from puppy mills and back yards breeders. You will pay as much or lottttttts more $$$$ for these animals as from a reputable breeder and they can have major health problems since they are bred only for profit and not for love of the breed.
Ellise 01-31-2003, 12:16 AM Our Dobermans have all come from breders, except for AJ we have his parents. Misty died from old age in 1998 she was 15 (most dobies only live 12-13 yrs). We got Raina (Black & Rust) from Alabama, she and two other pups were left she curled up at DH's feet and fell asleep. so we bought her. Axl,(Blue & Rust) (DS named him after Axl Rose from GunsNRoses) we bought him in NC we had a friend who breds there, he was so funny and happy so we bought him on the spot he threw up in my car on the drive home. Aj is now 3 mos old (Fawn & Rust) watched his momma give birth to him, she only had two pups and the other one didn't make it so we kept AJ, he is my life joy, I had to teach him how to eat and drink cuz, mom was just too tired. Marie & STeph (Snowshoes) kitties DD wanted a kitten, so bad. we went to the pound and a family brought them in to have them put to sleep (Not with Dharma around!) After she gave them a lecture about having thier cat fixed she asked if we could take them, how could I say no? I love my Anibabies, they are just more of my kids, all think they should be in your lap
summercat 01-31-2003, 03:50 AM The 2 cats I had before I got C.C. came from {former} friends in Wichita, Kansas. When they moved back here they brought their 2 kittens who happened to be sisters & 1 couldn't live without the other. They were staying with me & my 2 cats had gotten stolen:toothy: :toothy: so they gave me thier kittens:D. They were named Java & Spaz.
Java was my dads baby lol everytime he would come over she would end up laying on his shoulder or lap. Then on my oldest DD's 15th b-day Java got killed on the road behind our apt.:( it broke my heart :(
Spaz is a BIG, fat, lazy {at times} cat, she is living with my daughter now but I miss her a lot. She loves to cuddle & purr & at times when she would hear a noise outside she would run to the window to inspect the patio lol & if she was outside when I went to get the mail she would follow, of course she would always get into trouble because she would get too close to the road.
One day my daughter was walking to school & came running home with Spaz in her arms telling me to please keep her inside because she was following her to school LOL.
CAGmomof2 01-31-2003, 01:24 PM We adopted most of our Pets from the Humaine Society(Animal Shelters) our Cat Angel was given to my Dh from his Former Landlord because she didn't have a home and was being abused at a Garage where they worked on automobiles.
So angel was a Street Cat who is a very loving cat.
Midnite our Cat was adopted from an Animal Shelter
Rosco and Jewels were adopted from the Animal Shelter as well.
PrairieRose 01-31-2003, 01:53 PM I got my poodle from a breeder, raised one of our cats from birth and the other was a kitten in a litter that one of our cats had. This cat actually ended up running the mother off! They are all fixed so we won't have anymore babies around here. My dd adopted a boxer from the pound and she is a wonderful dog. She's about 6 months old and sooooo smart and well bred, you can tell. We love that she has this dog and that the dog has her!
dolphin 02-02-2003, 10:40 PM We got our dog Pepe from a neighbor in Missouri back in 1990. He is 13 now. He is black and has gray around his mouth now. Dh calls him old man.
We had a poodle but she died a year ago right before Thanksgiving. I sure miss her. I would love to have another poodle but dh keeps saying no. It takes alot for him to get attached.
i.m.cheap 02-03-2003, 01:02 AM I found Penny using Petfinder.com I was looking for a small breed dog, and they led me to a women that has a pet rescue in Riley, KS. Penny's mom and dad had been abandoned on Fort Riley army base. Her momma was pregnant with the litter at the time. We got her when she was seven weeks old. She is a very good dog. I highly recommend Petfinder.com.

Coffee16 02-04-2003, 02:14 PM Belle(7 years old) and Baby 6 Years old(the female black labs) DH had when I first meet him.Baby was from the Humane society down in Florida where we first meet.
Bear about 3 1/2 years old(the male black lab)we got from PetSmart up when we went to get food.DH didn't know the Humane Society was there but I had seen the van and went to look.Well I fell in love with this little black lab who had the cutest face and the pretty eyes. The guy working there called him Buddy and said he was stupid.Well we went home since DH had said no at first.Well it was near Valentines Day and DH made the mistake of telling me that if I came up with the adoption fee I could have him.Well that night I pulled the money out of a jar I had and went to adopt him.Needless to say we have had him 3 Years almost and he is my favorite of the 3 and the smartest of the 3(Shush don't tell DH).
Tia(who turns 2 on May 19,2003)is Fluffy's daughter. She is from the first of 2 litters from a Cat my friend Mari had who worked at the same mall I used to.She is black with white underside and paws.I got her as a kitten 6 weeks and brought her home. She is a very sweet kitten and will cuddle under the covers sometimes. She is an indoor only cat.
Fluffy(3 1/2-4 Years old)gray with stripes looks kinda of like a tiger-Is Tia's Mother. She is a Stray who showed up on my friend Mari's doorstep almost 2 years ago.She gave birth 2 liiters. One was 2 years ago and the other was almost 8 months ago.She used to be an indoor/outdoor cat but is an indoor cat now.We have had Fluffy 7 Months as of February 12,2003.My friend Mari went on vacation and left her in ths pet store/kennel in the mall where DH and Mari work now.She had asked us to go by and check on her. When Dh would go by once a day at least there would be no food or water and her cage would be flithy. So he would get her fresh water and take her out so she could get excerise and feed her.The kittens from the last liiter was there too because Mari's husband had decided he didn't want anymore cats.So in return for boarding Fluffy and her kittens they could sell the kittens when they were old enough.Well they sold the kittens and Mari's husband decided fluffy was going to the Humane society.Considering she was older and the kittnes would have a better chance of a new home so instead of bringing home another one of her kittens Dh brought her home.Needless to say DH had said there would be no more animals but needless to say when he found out she was going to the humane society he changed his mind. When she came home she would bite(drawing blood),claw, and hiss at anyone who touched her or tried to pick her up.Turns out when we took her to the vet there was a hole in her tail where it meets her backside and it was infected.so he gave us medicine. We had to do this for 3 weeks and it took 2 people to give it to her.Well it healed.Needless to say 7 months later her temperment is slowly improving but not all the way but she is starting to fit into the household more calmly and likes to lay on a lazyboy recliner near the computer and sun herself near that window. She also likes to be picked up sometimes now.
Mommyof2lildivas 02-07-2003, 08:31 PM We got Oreo and Cuddles two years ago from a litter that my SIL's cat had. They are indoor cats and just absolutely the sweetest things. My Auggie was adopted from a rescue society here in town, he was the most timid little guy and he's who our dd Chloe warmed up to the quickest. He was so skinny and starved, but now he's my food thief, I'm always having to get him out of the trashcan, even though he eats well and I give him plenty of treats.
Now our newest addition, Queen Caramella is coming from the Basset Rescue group in our area. She's being brought over on Sunday.
Miss Kitty 02-12-2003, 06:56 PM We rescued our beagle/rat terrier puppy out of the back of an old truck. Probably dumped.
Dd rescued our cat from the inside of a wrecked car in back of a station.
Our rabbits have been purchased from breeders or bred by dd herself. She is buying another breeding pair in two weeks ($100).
She saved all her fair winnings last summer to buy her Aussie puppy from a breeder who also instructs Jr. Handlers and helps with 4-H.
debbiepete 02-12-2003, 07:27 PM we got Jade on death row at the pound after my himalyian was run over and left to die by our drunk neighbors. BJ our persian was given to us after Jenn and Bryan broke up. They are the 2 most spoiled cats in the world, but we love them!!!
cody15650 02-17-2003, 01:07 AM We got all our pets free, they were people we knew that ended up having dogs or cats & were going to take them to the pound. We have 3 dogs, 2 outside & one in. We have 2 cats that stay outside too.:paw: :cat:
frugalmel 02-19-2003, 01:51 AM King is from a litter that my brother's dogs had. Butterscotch is from the Humane Society
My Kirby came with my husband. He (Kirby, not my DH) is a 15 year old super-sized Blue Merle Sheltie. My DH got him from a breeder.
