Our Xena is really a big barker. I swear that she barks at leaves when they fall! Have any of you had any luck with limiting your dog's barking? Help!!!

oh my do we know what you are going through!! except our dog only barks at night!!! it is driving us crazy! she will bark solid for hours on end!! please, if anyone has any suggestions, we could use them too!!! thanks!:( :(

We have a Beagel, they are known barkers/howlers, so from a puppy we never let him bark in the house and even outside we would scold him for barking if it wasn't at something/someone. We just scold him and if that doesn't work we go and grab him by the collar and scold him and that seemed to work. Maybe he is just a good dog.

I'm not sure if you'll be opposed to trying this. Growing up we bred and showed fox terriers. They can be quite noisy little dogs and when there are so many, the need for peace and quiet is necessary. We used to fill a coffee can partially with pennies and shake the can and say NO and that worked for us.

You can buy barking collars that spray citronella under the dog's chin. Dogs dont' like the odor and will stop. this doesn't work 100% of the time, but you might try it. I have had friends use the shake can like mentioned above with good results.

if your dog is bored,s/he will bark for lack of anything alese to do. Dogs are pack animals and shouldn't be left outside by themselves all of the time. They need interaction with their "pack"--your family.

As a last result, you can have your dog debarked. Tey will still bark, but it sounds like a hoarse whisper. This involves nicking the vocal chords. No, it's not what most people want to do to a pet, but consider these two things: many, thousands of perfectly sweet dogs are turned in to pounds every year for just this single problem and many, many kennel owners routinely debark since twenty yapping Smooth Fox terriers (or any other breed!) is NOT a pretty sound!

My suggestion was going to be the same as Sara's. We filled a can with pennies and shook it with a firm "no barking" when Bennie would bark. He still barks at the doorbell, but that's pretty much it, and that we can forgive, because he is a DOG after all!

i dont own any dogs anymore BUT I wish my eighbors would do something! They have two Basset Hounds that i can honestly say i hate. Before we bought our house the one attacked my neighbors 6 yr old grandson and he almost bit hy hubby too. I really love animals but not these two. They bark at EVERYTHING!!!!,,I had to call my neighbor a couple times when my youngest was a little baby because they would start up and wake her up. UGH!!!!
Its amazing to me that an owner would just let them bark..our yards are fairly close to me its just rude to let them bark like that.

They sell shock collars that will give the dog a small jolt when they get going. Then, I've also heard that an air horn will do the trick (I guess it's along the same lines as change in a coffee can). Our husky mix was a barker at night- thankfully, she ran away and never came back- because her stay with us was about to come to an end anyways. I don't understand dog owners who have "Bob Barkers" and it doesn't bother them.
