View Full Version : If you own your own home, are you happy with it?
PrairieRose 02-20-2003, 09:52 AM We live in the house that I grew up in. I love this old house but it does need some updating that we're gradually working on. Since we've paid it off in the past few months I'm finally beginning to feel that we can put some real money back into it. It's definitely not my dream house and if I hit the lotto I would probably build a new home in the country somewhere but for the most part I'm happy with it. It feels more like a family member than just a house. Does that make ANY sense?
Michelle 02-20-2003, 10:08 AM Yes, I still love it. My only complaint is not owning enough land.
homesteadmamma 02-20-2003, 11:28 AM Yes our home is my dream home, but I do wish we had some land.
If I was ever to get rich - we'd purchase an old farm house with all the trimmings.
I love my house. We had it built @5 years ago. I would like more land but hopefully we will be able to have some land someday.
captclearance 02-20-2003, 01:30 PM I love my home, it was ugly when I bought it, we have worked hard on and it feels like home to me......
Darlene 02-20-2003, 07:01 PM Been here almost 10 yrs and our other home for 9. I love our home but am itching for a new adventure.;)
I'm with you on the old farmhouse with all the trimmings Homestead Mamma. I also wouldn't mind a log home with a big front porch. :) A house up high where I could see forever & watch beautiful sunrises and sunsets...
justjenn 02-20-2003, 08:44 PM Yes, I love our home. It is really tiny, but we plan on building onto it, but I wouldn't have it any other way. :)
AmyBoz 02-21-2003, 12:08 PM I do love my home. When we first moved in, I did not love it as it was my second choice. However, the other one would have been just a bit out of our range and would have stretched us too much financially. Dh loved this home from the minute he saw it and I had hoped I would grow to love it. I did. The one and only thing that makes me crazy about this house is the way the dogs claws scratch the hardwood floors. It doesn't matter how much you clip them, the beautiful floors get scratched and that makes me nuts. However, there's really nothing to be done except for to get rid of him, and I'm not giving up my Bennie!
AmyBoz 02-21-2003, 02:34 PM I love pictures...I'd love to see your homes!
Ellise 02-21-2003, 02:57 PM I'm like Amy, this one was my second choice. But the other one didn't have enough yard. Now I'm on just a little over an acre. Once I get the front yard the way I want it, it'll feel more like home. Our first house, dh grew up in, quite small but a great little house. I do wish my home had a bit more space ie... the living room, But we're thinking of adding a Sunroom soon and maybe eventually building up.
sixfreds 02-21-2003, 05:39 PM I LOVE my house, as soon as we walked it we know this house was perfect for us...... and I still love it...
I would LOVE to like in the house I grew up in, there are lots of memories there but this house will have some great memories too..

frugalmel 02-23-2003, 06:10 PM I like this house alot. we are backed up to a park so no houses behind us. I just wish we had a basement. This is a temporary house for us. We hope to live here for at least 4-6years. With the Army it is hard to tell tough. Guess I will just have to stay on top of the clutter and toys. ;)
ReneeLynn 03-17-2003, 12:44 PM I'm still in the "learning to love it" stage. We have lived here less than a year. There is a lot of fixing up to do which will take time. We are doing it as we can afford it. It was a good choice for us financially as it did not leave us overextended.
simplemom 03-17-2003, 02:09 PM The house we live in was not our first choice or second or third...it was the only one we could afford...it's quite small for us. One positive aspect is that there is alot of wood in it and our backyard is bigger than most of our neighbours.
Maybe, oneday, we will have a large country home....with lots of land...:)
cozyquilter 03-17-2003, 08:00 PM I love my home, I liked the house when we first bought it...but I love making it our home....the previous owners have very modern 80's decorating and we are enjoying making the interior "older" and warmer looking. I would be happy to be here for many years to come. It has a rural feel because it backs up to ta hugh regional part system, although it is in a suburban neighboorhood.
I like the smaller size and Dh likes the 4 car tandem garage. :)
When we bought the house it was "harvest gold", with brown shuttters.
We painted in a reproduction color from the 20's, with "cherry coke" colored shutters and doors.
We still need to do LOTS of landscaping around the house, and I would like to put on a front porch so some sort...
cozyquilter 03-18-2003, 09:39 AM And here it is....I hope this works...
It didn't work!! oh well.......:)
sunshine 03-18-2003, 10:49 AM I love our home. Dh and looked at over 50 houses before we bought this one (at auction no less!). As soon as we stepped in the front door of this house, I grabbed his arm and whispered "I'm home". He felt that way too- and we've lived here for 9 years, still love it.
We have a smallish, 3 bedroom, 1 bath on 2.5 acres in the country. 3/4 basement (wet) summer kitchen , barn, grainery (we tore it down for the wood) 2 wells + city water and cistern. Hardwood floors, crystal door knobs, . . . . . .
I love it out here.
guest2 03-18-2003, 12:27 PM I'd love to be able to own the home that I grew up in, but it's in Hawaii and just sold for over $600,000 (astronomically out of my price range :( ). Our home here is also the only one that we could afford to buy at the time. It's small, but I have great neighbors and have been told over and over again that we have the best lot in town. I'd love to be able to afford to get rid of this house and build a bigger one (one day...). However, for the time being, I'm content. I have very small house payments and that allows me to be home with my kids. My dream is also to have an old farmhouse with land!!!
Happylady 03-29-2003, 10:18 PM There is a lot about my house that I like, but I wish I had bigger closets and a couple of extra rooms. There are no basements here and our attic is pretty worthless.
taylor97 04-06-2003, 04:20 AM We paid our house off last year. Even though it is relatively small (1500sf), we have extra storage in a detached garage which we use as a gameroom/storage room. It is big enough for the four of us. Although I would rather live in the community where I grew up or either at the beach, I love the location of our house if I have to live in this town. We have over an acre lot so we have plenty of room and we are convenient to everything in our small town.
Sara Noel 08-06-2003, 01:28 AM I'm happy with our home. It needs some repairs soon. (gutters and roof) but it has a really nice floor plan and fits our family well.
It's not new and it's not fancy. It's traditional and has such a feeling of warmth.
We both discussed a nice home in the country with lots of land, but I wanted the school district we're in. We had to make a major decision and chose the school system.
Missy 08-06-2003, 01:31 AM i like the house, but we need something bigger, more closet space, basement, garage, and so fourth....maybe even located somewhere in a different state too...
mustang80 08-06-2003, 08:40 AM Our house is too small-we are still in our "we'll just stay here 5 years" home. It's been nearly 14 years now since we bought it. We only had 1 DD then...
We have entirely too much stuff. DH continues to bring home stuff that we don't have room for.
We have an attic, basement, and storage shed that DH built, but only 2 bedrooms for the 5 of us, and 1 bathroom. We are slowly attempting to put a rec room in the basement. That should help the crowding a bit.
We tore this house apart from top to bottom, kind of like CJ is doing. There was no insulation, just plaster and lathe. We replaced nearly all of the windows and switched the radiators for baseboards. The whole house has been rewired and the service upped from 60 amps to 150 amps. We have rebuilt the deck 3 times (don't ask, lol).
The kitchen needs repainting, we redid it 10 years ago. We also put in a new roof and siding. We will NEVER recoup what went into this house.
Someday it will be just right for DH and I again, lol.
couponchic 08-26-2003, 11:50 AM We are in our starter home. Have been here a couple years, probably will be here a few more. Then, we will move into something larger. I am satisfied with our home as it is big enough for me, Dh, and our pup. I have the laundry room we wanted, but am missing the kitchen window that I wanted. DH also wants to get a bigger garage for the next house - at least a two car and a detached workshop. I also hope for more land as right now I can reach out and practically touch my neighbors' homes.
Jayne 08-26-2003, 01:00 PM I love my house!!! It was our dream house in our dream neighborhood!!! We would take Sunday drives here and dream of someday owning one of these houses, well our dream came true!! The only things I want are, a new kitchen, new bath(they are both 70's) and possibly another detached garage with a workshop for dh's and my hobbies!!!!
