Ok this could be considered more of a rant than a question. We have neighbors, have been neighbors for 20 years or so. BUT they recently got a dog. This is a cow dog and it barks. It barks a LOT. But it really barks alot when they are out of town. He barks all night long. Under my bedroom window no less. I get so tired of that barking dog that I lie awake and dream of mean things to do to it! I'm not the type person who is mean to animals but that barking dog almost drives me to it. Why in the world won't he just SHUT up?! I mean, hours on end.......bark, bark, bark, bark. I just want to get some :rest:

I kind of chuckled a little reading that post because it reminded me of the Seinfield episode when Elaine couldn't sleep with the dog barking...anyway...have you tried talking to the neighbors and maybe they have a porch they could keep the dog in during the night. I don't know what else to suggest but I hope you are able to get a good night sleep soon. I know how frustrating it can be!!

I can't offer anything but sympathy. Our neighbors have two sweet little dogs, DH and I just love them (we are "dog people") but they are allowed to bark and bark and bark, literally for hours. Our backyard backs up to theirs and there is not a room in my house that I can't hear those dogs. I have gone over in tears. I have begged and pleaded with them. I hear other neighbors screaming at them. They will be courteous for a month or so and then they go back to their neglectful ways. They think we are some kind of meanies to even complain about the dogs. Our home owners assoc. does have rules against allowing your pets to become a nuisance and I guess that is what we will have to do next.

I would have a nice talk to them and hopfully they will do something about it, if not there should be city ords in place to make them stop..... What a shame it would be if they made you go that route...... (Shame on them I mean )

Okay i have one of those barking dogs, she barks everything something moves. I just yell out to knock it off. GOD I HATE DOGS barking. It would be one thing if there was something out there to bark at. So i totally understand though i have no words of wisdom for you sorry

Unfortunately, herding dogs tend to be mouthy. If your neighbors can't/won't do anything about this, ask them to look into debarking them. Is it cruel? Not when you consider the alternative! It also makes for MUCH happier neighbors!

LOL Daphne I was thinking the same thing. We live in a small subdivision, and 7 out of 9 houses have dogs. When it's nice out, I'm forever hearing a dog bark. It doesn't bother me much except when I'm trying to sleep.

Oh, I sympathize. We have a neighbor who has so many dogs, I can't even count them. It's a revolving door for pets over there. Now she has some dauchounds (spelling), and their barks are not as loud as her big dogs, they are more annoying to me. It's a constant yapping. Other neighbors have tried talking to her, but it doesn't help. Since I have 3 cats, I'm kind of afraid to complain because her kids are all in trouble with the cops and I'm afraid they might retaliate with our cats.

I hate to be the odd ball out here, but You can't make a dog stop barking (that's their job). Your neighbours however could perhaps move the dog to another part of the yard so it isn't so annoying? Or buy one of those devices that goes on the collar to help them not bark so much. Maybe the dog is lonely, have you tried to make friends with this animal? The reason I ask is you said it barks alot when they are gone. I'd hate to think someone called the athorities on my dogs and had them removed. Remember, dogs become part of the family it's like having a child taken away. Hoping you can find an alternitive solution.

Have you gone over and talked to your neighbors? I find that is the best thing to do- believe me, if this dog is keeping you awake- it's also keeping them awake (we had a night barker- and believe me, it's just as annoying to the owner as it is to you). Maybe if your neighbor knew the dog was disturbing you- they'd be more apt to find other accomidations for the dog- whether it be let sleep in the garage at night, put in in doggy day care when they're out of town- or whatever. My friend's neighbor had a dog that barked while they were at work all day and we were studying. One day we decided to tape record the dog and we played the tape blasting on the stereo all night long for them to enjoy.

Ok, so this is not a good idea in your case, but something to add to your thoughts of evil things you could do the next time it happens. LOL

If you can't beat 'em ...join 'em. I'd get myself a nice loud howling beagle. LOL

The dog only barks when they are not at home:( . I have to say that I have had the exact same idea Sara, as you mentioned, recording it and playing it all nite for them when they are at home ;) . We have friends who have a beagle, wonder if I could borrow her for a few nites........?
Seriously I did go over and have another talk with her (I was very nice) and she promised they would get one of those shocking barking collars before they went away overnight again. So we've got our fingers crossed that this works.

Dogs tend to bark more when they are bored, esp. working and herding dogs because their nature is active.
I feel for you, we are in the process of traing dd's Aussie not to bark when bored. So we are constantly keeping her busy with toys and her activity station.
