View Full Version : What frugal thing do you do that drives your family crazy
TAMA-TOE 01-30-2002, 05:40 PM He-he my family cracks me up, when it comes to some of the frugal changes I have made. Suppose I put it all on them at once and should of done a little at a time. My dd will say 'dang mom your smart" over alot of the stuff I have learned.
But as for my dh lol somethings make him crazy. One thing that drives him up the wall is- we have a ceilingfan with 4 light bulbs burning in it in the livingroom, also we have a hanging lamp with one light bulb in it, giving off more than enough light. Well it never fails that dh will go in to the livingroom and turn on the darn ceilingfan light for light. A few minutes later enter me, I go over to the lamp turn it on and turn the ceilingfan light off. He agrees that the lamp provides enough light but his excuse is its easier to turn on the ceilingfan light. Everytime I do this he starts laughing:rolleyes:
What do you do in the name of frugality that drives your family crazy?
mom23boyz 01-30-2002, 06:06 PM Well my hubby HATEs that I won't buy Best Foods mayo without coupon. If I can get another brand cheaper...well I buy the cheaper. He loves Best Foods..lol
There are many things I am just drawing a blank now. When I think of more...I will be back:)

strawberryfire 01-30-2002, 06:10 PM after he finishes with a bottle or jar, and he goes to throw it out, i always grab it and say no we could use that soon, he then looks up on the top of the cupboard, where there is half a dozen sitting there, sighs and hands it to me.
that and he will say lets get pizza, and i say no there are better things we can spend our money on.
krazeeblonde1959 02-02-2002, 05:58 AM The one thing I did, that had dh thinking I was ready for the padded room was when I painted my grout in the bathroom! It was in great shape, but it was an ugly beige color up against white tiles. YUCK! So, instead of spending the money to redo the whole tile project, I just painted the grout white. Now it looks fresh and clean. Even he had to admit the improvement!
My next project, will blow his mind tho! I am going to try CountryMom's tip on recycling the leftover deodorant! Can't wait to see his face then! :D
just my husband and I so I have less of a chance to irrate anyone ....
Actually Hubby and I are very much on the same wavelegnth on things. He does not mind that I have 15 twelve packs of diet coke staked by the kitchen cabinet, and planning to purchase more (1.99 a 12 pack on sale.. grab them while you can). regular "sale' price around here is 2.50, goes up to 3.69 at times.
He stockpiled even as a single guy, does not mind leftovers, encourages cooking ahead and freezing, supports my "but honey.. the store is qualrupling to .39 i just HAVE to make another trip" binges.
BUT I do not do a lot of the ultra frugal things .. like line drying, washing baggies, home made laundry and dish soaps, etc.
MANDERS 02-12-2002, 11:06 AM Oh Dh gets upset wehn I won't buy potato chips or when his uniforms are still wet from being hung when he needs them,he trys to go sneak them in the dryer but I quickly find a pair of old blue jeans and old shirt for him to wear to work.He gets frustrated when I tell him to leave baggies in the sink to wash, but then he will put the flimsy sandwich baggies in too and I tell him its a waste to wash them.
On the ceiling fan lights I took out all the lights except one and no one has complained yet.I would try that saves on electricity and usage of light bulbs.

strawberryfire 02-12-2002, 06:29 PM ive thought of another one
as soon as the specials come in the mail, it sit on the floor, grab a pen, circle, and read, i cant be disturbed during this very sacred moment, and have been known to start singing when i take it out of the letterbox, and theres lots!
mustang80 02-17-2002, 10:52 PM I drive my kids CRAZY by telling them what I paid for everything after coupons. They'll say "Hey, we have cookies, thanks mom" and I say "Yeah they were $$$ and I only paid $ for them". I can't help it-it just comes out of my mouth. Now they just groan and roll their eyes at me. They really don't care what I paid for it, they just want to eat it! LOL:D
justGina 02-18-2002, 01:23 AM Two words: dumpster diving. :D
couponchic 07-26-2003, 03:41 PM :bump: Pretty interesting to see what other people think about our frugal habits!!! Trying to think of what irritates my DH...but drawing a blank. He is very good about helping recycle and he loves my using coupons, but I haven't gotten him to where he would go to the store without me and use coupons.
gemmbp 07-26-2003, 04:33 PM I give mine the "it was XX$$$$ but I only Paid X$$$$" too! I follow people around the house a lot with the lectures, about lights etc. I don't think the kids "get it":D
Shell 07-27-2003, 12:40 AM I know one thing that drove dh crazy. I had a big block of cheese and in the very corner was a little bit of mould. I cut of the bad part and then saved the cheese. He was so upset, he said I feed him rotten food. :toothy:
bamamomto4 07-27-2003, 01:34 AM  some of these crack me up.
I guess what everyone here hates the most is my after coupon totals. I am proud I got tp free,or baby wipes for 49¢ (still using those huggie coupons :D)
I have an online friend from London (originally from TN) and she laughs when i tell her about my coupon days. She says I'm obssessed with coupons! Who me?!!! :toothy:
Lori Biever-Launder 07-27-2003, 04:23 PM People can always tell when DH is home--the house is lit up like a Christmas tree! I follow him around and turn off the lights. He yells at me, turns them on, I shut them off...:toothy:
I also don't do pizza very often. I like it, but can make it for waaay less!
debbiepete 07-27-2003, 05:44 PM My husband dreads grocery shopping with me because he says I am totally anal about my coupons and he says the cashiers must dread seeing me come in the store. Like yesterday we bought roses for Jenn and I had a 1.50 off fresh flowers. it didnt scan and she said item didnt match purchase. I responded I think roses fall under the fresh flower catagory, he said I was rude!!!!
graci42 08-01-2003, 02:05 PM I love FREE!! I came home with a free 10 pk of ball point pens and a free bottle of "off brand" dish soap....coupons from local grocery store...When I told DH he just ROLLED his eyes!
FREE...FREE...FREEEEEEE!
Jeanna 08-01-2003, 03:47 PM I'm also one who has to say I got this for x amount of dollars and it was regual xx. I even do it in church when someone admires a dress I am wearing. I am getting better about the church thing though.

Milhos 08-03-2003, 02:20 PM My family can't stand it when they want to buy something and I make them wait until Saturday afternoon - when I can get the Sunday paper and check next week's sales! Many times I have saved us plenty by holding out until Saturday afternoons.
Dh also bought me a picture frame. In it is my "best savings yet" grocery shopping receipt. Whenever I out do myself, dh smirks as I sing and do a little dance in the car on the way home knowing that I'm going straight to the picture frame in the den - even before I put away the $.50 containers of ice cream.
vecollins 08-03-2003, 05:35 PM well my dh got used to my buying at FRED'S or anywhere else a long time ago, but other family members still find it amusing that I go get 4 more of something on a Saturday when i already have 15 of it.. I just laugh at them :) :) especially when they call me and say hey do you have so and so or this and that and can I get some of it...
So the stockpile comes in handy time after time....
Mom23boys 08-03-2003, 05:45 PM Using coupons for everything. They say I am cheap. I say I am frugal by getting the most for my money. It isn't like it grows on trees. Plus the extra money we saved always ends up going to one of them for something.
Probably lots of things I do bug dh. He doesn't look for things on sale much. He likes every light on in the house, whether he's in that room or not. Hates coupons. Took my laundry line down from the yard. Turns up the heat in the winter so he can run around in shorts and t-shirt. Guess we're different in the way we save and spend......
voodidit 08-05-2003, 11:26 PM I think he likes me trying to be frugal..lol. He brags when I get hin shirts at Goodwill...lol.
rebecca 11-20-2004, 07:55 AM TAMA-TOE Having one light in one ceiling fan! Now I don't feel so odd! I also, have one light bulb in my ceiling fan. My sister calls me a scrooge, but when she says that I feel like a proud peacock! Mustang 80 when my kids ask for something the first thing that comes out of my mouth is let me see if I have a coupon. If I don't have a coupon for it, it stays in the store. gemnbp I also do the same thing you do. I don't think our kids will ever understand until they go on their own. I go one step further if I found a good bargain I call my family because I feel like I hit the jackpot. Renee
fernykins 11-20-2004, 08:44 AM I save all my large brown envelopes and reuse them. My son and his wife think I'm nuts. I can't stand the tv on if no one is in he room. I get very frustrated with my DS and DIL They spend to much money and waste a lot of food. It makes me want to SCREAM.
Darlene 11-20-2004, 09:40 AM If I had to pick one thing it would be my stockpile. They make fun of me(especially my stash of pasta) but are glad when they run out of something and I have what they are looking for.
I do have to get better at using up & rotating my hoard though.;)
