Does anyone here knit? I'd love to learn. My mil made me a pair of knitted socks a few years back that I love to wear around the house when it is cold. they aren't shaped, just basically tube socks. She also made little baby booties for the kids. I'd love to learn but when i asked her to show me (long story short) she said she'd show me if i paid her to. I asked her if she'd make them if I provided the supplies (again long story short) she said no. So anyhow, I'd liek to learn to make these. Does anyone know how to knit, and if so where should I go to learn, ie; what books or instruction helped you learn?

After much looking, I finally found a good site to help you out Melissa! http://www.wonderful-things.com/newknit.htm

If you have any questions, just ask! :)

I knit as well and am self-taught. Its not a hard craft to learn. I just don't have a lot of time to knit but every now and then I knit an afghan for a gift.

If you have any questions, ask away.

My mom taught me to knit, but I still find www.stitchguide.com helpful. Lots of information, video guides and so forth for knit, crochet, cross stitch, and more.

All these replies are great!! I am going to Wally to get some needles and yarn next time I have spending money. Does anyone have a suggestion on needle sizes...and to do tube socks, will i need one of those "C'' shaped (sort of) needles?

I think you need double pointed needles to make tube socks, although you can make them on regular needles and add a seam.

I'd start with a medium weight yarn and needles- maybe DK weight or sport weight yarn and about size 8 needles for practice.

in the depths of my craft supplies i found a booklet that tells hoow to knit, but it doesn't explain how to read the patterns, can anyone help me read or understand patterns?

Sure, can you type in exactly what the pattern says? I can then tell you what it says without all the abreviations.

I am getting knitting needles and yarn tomorrow to practice with though, and when i get back from shopping i will type in the next set of directions.

Okay, just for now Melissa, stay away from UK or European directions and websites. (Sorry Bev! :) ) They are a bit different from US directions and can really mess you up when you are learning, at least until you get the hang of reading directions.
