View Full Version : Do you have an extra freestanding freezer?
Sara Noel 02-03-2002, 09:43 PM We're looking into buying a freezer when we move. Hurray!! I was wondering how many members have a freezer and what type? I am getting excited just thinking of finally being able to stock up a bit in the freezer. *LOL* We didn't have space here, but with the move yippee skippy. hehe

krazeeblonde1959 02-05-2002, 08:33 AM We don't have one yet. I want one so bad I can't stand it! We are going to hold out, though till we get our new mountain home. Not really any place to keep it here.
Congrats on the move and the new freezer! :)

TAMA-TOE 02-05-2002, 02:35 PM Yes actually I have two and organize them in this way: the upright holds all the meats (we had a beef and pork slaughtered late last year), the chest is small and holds all frozen veggies from the garden and some other misc frozen items, the fridge/freezer contains the ice cream, popcicles frozen fruits, cheese, items that may be used more often. To save you some $$ you might want to check the paper, garage sales, and estate sales.
We have an upright frezer, it is about 15 or so years old. Finally trying to figure out how to get and KEEP things organized in it. I have plastic containers that have my packages of different meats seperated, that seems to help. Now if I can only get rid of the candy that I got on sale after Christmas, I will have another free shelf . Could not resist.. candy bars and FUDGE :)
Megareader 02-05-2002, 08:28 PM We sure do! It's a Hotpoint ( had to go look to find the brand ) and is from dh's 2nd marriage. And they divorced in 1981. Oh dear, I bet that thing is as inefficient as you-knowwhat!
Jerseygirl 02-10-2002, 11:57 AM I grew up in a house where we always had an extra freezer-and actually a fridge in the garage that was only plugged in for use when we were entertaining large scale. Now since there is only the two of us I have my fridge\freezer in the kitchen and kept the fridge/freezer from the second kitchen and put it in the garage-we got a lot of free turkeys at the holidays-his job and the grocery store giveaways- so the outside freezer still holds a few of those. I figure it will come in handy for outdoor parties over the summer.
wife228 02-10-2002, 09:18 PM Out here I couldn't live without one. I have to go 30 miles to shop and only go once a month. I load the freezer.
I got mine at Sears 2 years ago. It is 3 feet deep and beleive me we will never starve.
I shop at Sam's club and buy in bulk, it is a lot cheaper and then just make smaller packages of the meat and label and date and freeze it. I keep an inventory of what is in there so when I go the next time I will know what I need.
We are actually looking into buying another one for freezing our crops in fall.

Lori Biever-Launder 02-17-2002, 02:10 AM I am a classic hunter/gatherer and could never be without an extra freezer. I have a huge one--I could actually stand up in mine if it were completely empty (no shelves OR food). I buy bread in bulk too, so always have tons of food in it. I always laugh when people panick when a bad storm is forecast. They all run to the store for extra food. I just glance fondly at my bulging pantry and freezer and don't get off the couch!
mustang80 02-18-2002, 10:06 AM I love having a freezer! My MIL gave me hers a few years ago (pretty sure it's inefficient:( ) I love to go to BJ's or hit a great meat sale and pack it in. I gave the lower bin section to my mom so she can stock up too, just her and dad-but she can take advantage of great sales too. Now if I could just get the kids to run down there for me.....
MicheleMomof3 02-22-2002, 10:34 PM Well Ive been lucky. I got an upright one last year for the small task of hauling it home from my Ex-MIL house. It came with about $200 of meat in it. She was down sizing and didnt need it. Last week a friend of mine informed when she was at the Goodwill someone had dropped off a chest deep freezer outside. I hurried there and ask the lady how much they would be asking for it. She told me it was a bit rusted & smelly funny so they were tossing it. And I could have it for free if I wanted to lug it home, lol Of course we brought it home. It sits on our porch so the little bit of rust didnt bother me. Actually most of it came off when I scoured it. We opened 4 boxes of baking soda and let it sit in there and the smell is gone. So now we have 2 freezers for free. Im doing like someone else suggested one will be for meats and the other will be for veggies, sauces, bread and cheese. I also started shopping at Sams so this is great for us. Especially since we want to start shopping once a month. I totally agree with the other person who suggested getting a used one. Ours are both over 10 years old but work great!

MANDERS 03-07-2002, 02:02 AM We got ours from a friend for $50 it is pretty big.We keep meats, bread veggies, christmas candy :) water jugs and frozen pizzas bought on sale of course.I love it,the only thing is its in our basement so I have to go downstairs to it.Good luck in finding one
QuilterMom 03-07-2002, 08:48 AM We have a 10.0 cubic foot chest freezer in our garage - I believe it's a Kenmore. We stock up on reduced meat at Sam's (when we can find it) and I only go to the bread outlet once a month so we keep it packed pretty full with a variety of things.
TheFrugalDiva 03-07-2002, 10:26 AM :D We got very lucky...when we bought this house (at $10000 under the asking price....never hurts to offer!) it came not only with two beautiful old deep clawfoot tubs...but a HUGE chest type freezer in the basement. I keep it stocked with everything that wont fit in the regular fridge freezer. I do need to replace the seal on it...we get a bad ring of ice around the top :( but I am a really bad procrastinator..and as long as the food is staying frozen..I havent got around to that yet
mom2knk 03-16-2002, 04:05 PM We got a chest freezer at Lowe's about 6 months ago. It is a 7.0 cu. ft. I think!! I don't know how we ever lived without it!! I love it, love it, love it!!:D
Ilovesewing 03-16-2002, 04:20 PM Yes, we have had one for several years. I think it's a 13cu., it's very large. It's great for sales, but also for ice to put into ice chests when going on a picnic, camping or wherever. Nothing irks me more than having to pay for ice!
Lori Biever-Launder 03-31-2002, 03:37 AM Frugal Diva, you might try rolling a towel up and putting it over the top of the freezer door after it's closed. This might help with the ice. I haven't tried it; I just thought it might work!
Katybird 03-11-2003, 10:48 PM We have 2. We bought one at Lowes about 5 years ago, it is a medium sized chest freezer. The other one we got for free from a friend of my FILs just for the cost of bringing it home. It is an big old upright and I am sure not super energy efficient but it does a good job and I did not see a huge jump in our electric bill when we got it so I am happy with. We keep most of our meat in it because it is easy to find things in. The chest has veggies and bread products in it.
sixfreds 03-12-2003, 08:32 AM We have an upright which was a gift from my mother in law when we bough this house so it is almost 5 years old and now I think what did I do without it...
It is a great thing to have!!
Eileen
ReneeLynn 03-12-2003, 10:08 PM We have a chest style one. We love and stock up on great deals along with OAMC.
I think I have read that chest styles are more energy efficient than uprights. They are a pain to find stuff in though.
mrscornbread 03-12-2003, 10:22 PM I have a chest freezer that someone gave my dh about a month ago. I don't know what I would do without it. I must admit that it is hard to keep it neat and tidy, but I have so much stockpiled in it. I hope I am never without one again. I have always had the second fridge in the garage, at least for the past 10 years and I need that too.
crdurham 03-12-2003, 10:27 PM We have a chest style...I got it at Christmas...its really come in handy for extra meat I buy in bulk. We got it new at Lowe's...I think it was about $125. I need to fill it up more...lol..
Ellise 03-13-2003, 09:43 AM We have two chest types right now, am wanting to get an upright. One is 10 cu.ft in my diningroom and the other is 22.cu. ft. in the building out back, it holds all the "extras" from the garden and when we do get 1/2 side of beef, pork and chicken. I want the upright for Ice cream, Yogurt, fruit, fries you know little things we use alot.
The best way I've found to keeping them organized is laundry baskets!
I have one for each section, Veggies, Chicken, Beef, pork, Fruit.
If you get the square ones they seem to work best that way all you have to do is move the basket to find what you are looking for instead of pulling everything out to get to it (which is usually on the bottom!)
Darlene 03-13-2003, 10:19 AM We have a chest freezer, it's a large one that we got from Sears about 16 years ago. I too do the small plastic basket thing to keep it somewhat organized. Things do seem to get lost in there somehow, lol. I tried doing an inventory sheet but that didn't last too long.:toothy:
I buy meat, veggies and bread etc. on sale and pop'em into my handy dandy freezer. Great investment!
Yippee Skippy~Enjoy! :)
guest2 03-13-2003, 01:36 PM We have a huge upright (Frigidaire I think) that I bought to replace the old one that had been given to us when the kids were babies and it finally gave up on us. It's packed to the gills at this point!!! LOL! We also have an extra refrigerator with a top freezer in the garge right next to our upright. In it goes all the extra items that need refrigeration and I don't have room for in the house fridge. The top freezer in that holds frozen lunchmeats, bread, and frozen eggs along with whatever else my teen boys stuff in there (I found frozen soda in there yesterday????). I need to start using up some of the things in the freezer to make room for our garden surplus again at the end of the summer.
