View Full Version : argh! about to throw in the needles
Missy 10-18-2003, 02:56 PM Ok, I have been trying all evening (minus chat time) last night, all yesterday afternoon, and all this morning to figure out this three needle method of making a sock. i get it looking great but only as far as it being cast on. once i try to start knitting, it looks awful. Anyone know a flat method of making socks, one that can be joined together later?
I am very close to giving it up, but want to give it another shot first.
Maybe i should try hats...
But I really want to make a pair of socks...I was thinking Christmas gifts and dh and dk's want socks...hmmmm.
guest2 10-18-2003, 03:53 PM I can't help you since I am all thumbs when it comes to knitting. But what I can do is eoncourage and pray for you! I have faith in you Melissa, you can master this (and show that MIL of yours that she is just plain wrong;) ).
:hug2:
homesteadmamma 10-18-2003, 05:38 PM Melissa, don't you dare let that lady win!!!! You can do it, BUT learning to knit socks first is hard. Its not something everyone can pick up at first. Your best bet is to try something easier, get practise on that, then do the socks.
I know you can do it.
SewCrafty 10-19-2003, 07:46 AM Here are some sites I found:

Great step-by-step, but looks like it is for an experienced knitter.

Lots of patterns for 2 needles, including hats and mittens! :thumb:

2 Needle toddlers socks
That's all I found so far, let me know if any can help you or not. And don't give up, knitting on 4 needles is usually for an experienced knitter, maybe you just need to start out with a 2 needle pattern. :)
homesteadmamma 10-19-2003, 12:36 PM Here is another one that will help with all the stitches

Missy 10-19-2003, 02:18 PM Thanks ladies. I am trying and I am thinking that half my problem is perhaps that i need to get a book i can sit with and refer to over and over, that I can take with me whereever i sit to knit. So I am going to see if dh will buy me a few books. :D I don't want to give up.
homesteadmamma 10-19-2003, 03:06 PM Melissa, just by chance that he doesn't, you can find wonderful quilting instruction books at the library and often you can renew them a couple of times. That way, there is no added cost. Just a thought.
Heather 10-19-2003, 03:32 PM You've got great advice! You can do it Melissa! I know you can! They'll be beautiful when you are done.
Missy 10-19-2003, 05:04 PM I have been working away on what I hope will be a sock when I am done with it. I have started over and over to do it. I have referred to the book I have and the online sites everyone has given me. And guess what??
It is looking like a sock. Well, more like a socks cuff so far, but still. I am so happy!!
So far I have cast 48 sts onto three needles (16 sts each needle), sz 8. I have followed a k2, p2 around and around. Once i get it to three inches long I will see if i can scan it. I am using a verigated sport weight yarn (since this is for practice) instead of a solid color yarn. I have gotten one inch done so far. But one inch is a good start! I am so excited, Yay me! :yippee:
SewCrafty 10-19-2003, 05:28 PM WTG Melissa, can't wait to see them! :yippee:
