I have a question. I'd like to cover some hangers I have with a simple sc and using maybe chenille yarn.

I don't understand how to do this. I know it must be easy because the directions on the lion heart site are so short. lol

I guess I just don't quite understand how to start it. The directions basically just say do a sc onto the hanger. lol I am like ummm do I have a foundation chain? How am I starting this?

Any help would be appreciated. I'd like to make some for the baby's room.

::staring at yarn...looking at hanger...totally confused::

:toothy:

Here's their directions:
Beginning at the base of the hanger’s hook, single crochet around the entire hanger. Once you have covered the base of the hanger completely, continue single crocheting up the hook. Weave in the loose end and glue at the tip of the hook. Tie your ribbon into a bow at the base of the hook.

lol That's what I was thinking, but I am guessing that maybe I can do a foundation chain and just work around the hanger???

I guess we posted the directions at the same time. hehe.

No Sara, no foundation chain for this one. Hold the hanger with the 'hook' part facing left, start at the base of it tie a knot around it and leave enough of a 'tail' to be able to weave in when done.

You will then hold the hanger in your left hand, left thumb and middle finger holding the 'tail' of the knot and index finger holding the yarn you are going to work with.

Your crochet hook will go under the hanger, grab your yarn, pull up and make a single crochet. Do this all the way around and then go up the hook part of the hanger, make the stitches close enough you don't see the hanger through the yarn. Not too tight, but so they fill it up. End the same way you do whenever you crochet and weave in both ends.

Does that help?

oh!!! so the wire of the hangar acts sort of like a foundation chain...sort of. ??? is that right?

Yes Melissa, in this case it does. :)

I did it. I did it! lol
It was hard on my wrists though. Also, the chenille yarn is a killer for me when I am such a newbie. I used the largest hook I own.

I'll post a pic when I add a ribbon.

My stitches around are not too even.

Thank you for explaining it to me. It made perfect sense the way you explained it.

Melissa, the ones I have seen are usually not made with regular wire hangers, but the wooden ones, but now they have those nifty plastic ones that could maybe come close to the color youa re using.

Sara, cant wait to see the finished projects. I made lots in the past but I always used a shell stitch pattern and then slip stitched them onto wooden hangers. Anxious to see yours.

I'm glad I could help. :D

They do take a bit of practice to get used to doing. Can't wait to see pics!

Sara, I thought of it after I posted, it may be easier to turn the hanger with the hook part facing towards your right hand, that way you won't keep hitting it as you start. Still start at the base of the hook on the left hand side though.

Let me take a pic now without the bow. (I don't have any ribbon here at the moment) It has a little gap where I started, but I'll cover it with a bow.

It's not as nice as the example pic above, but I am happy that I tried it.
brb taking the pic.

Here it is. :toothy: Hard to see in the pic, but my yarn is variegated blue, pink, and white.

LOL

As I was doing this I was thinking ouch my wrist is hurting and why am I doing this again? I also was thinking, I wonder if there is an easier way than what I am doing.

I think next time, I would try a chenille yarn that isn't variegated and not as fuzzy. It's the only type I had here that was chenille type though.

Believe it or not, I have crocheted into those small plastic rings (the ones that used to be the pull for an old fashioned shade) with thread. Now that is a challenge! :D

It turned out great Sara, a bow will add lots of pizzazz. After you get brave enough to try another, your wrist will probably feel better and the whole thing will become easier. At least things go like that for me.

It looks great Sara. I would never guess that this was your first time doing this.
