So many relationships break up because of marriage and most counsellors will tell you its the number one thing that couples come to for counselling.

Why do you think that is?

This is just my theory, but I think money is used as a tool or measure of someone's worth by society today. I have heard it said that he who controls the money controls the home. That is why it is so important to come to an agreement on your financial goals with your spouse. Also, someone's actual self worth should never be measured in terms of finances. I hate it when people do this!!!

People have such different ideas about what to do with money. I also agree with Debbie about who brings home the money controls the house. That is not the case in our home but I know lots of people where that is the case.

Also it causes so much stress when you are in debt and that stress causes you to fight.

I think it's because one or the other of the couple doesn't always "see" what's going on the with the money. I mean if you make the bacon, you expect it to be in the fridge the next time you open the door, right? If it's not there you're going "Hey! Where's my bacon!". Well it doesn't quite work that way with money.......he who brings home the bacon doesn't always manage it. It's easy to say "well I deposited $1000 2 weeks ago!"....instead of reasoning it out....the rent was $350, groceries were $150, gas was $50, and so on.....It becomes a hot topic by not talking about it when one or both parties isn't mad. And it's a great way to escape from the blame of being in a tough situation.....blame it on the spouse....! That's when it causes breakups, jmho..... .
