I have only made hm pizza a few times and Little Caesars has pizza for like $5 for a large, so is it any cheaper to make at home?

How much does it cost you to make one at home?
Cheese here is pretty costly.

i dunno, i usually have most of the "fixins" at home. Like sausage, hamberg, onions, garlic, flour, sugar, salt, yeast, and so on, so it never seems to cost more to make it at home. plus ds has a blast getting his hands into the dough and "help" that in itself makes it fun, and worth it. :)

I'm always too scared to make it at home. What if it is gross? LOL I am such a chicken!

I think its cheaper to make at home and I know whats going into it. I usually have the makings already too.

mozzeralla cheese - I purchase it in bulk sizes. I bring it home, grind it up in my food processor and then freeze it in baggies. It freezes really well. I try to purchase it when it goes on sale as well.

Pizza sauce can also be purchased when on sale. I usually purchase 10 cans at once when there is a good sale on it. I have a recipe to make it, but I don't have a large enough pot. The recipe makes 50 pints.

Hmm I never make just one so I never figured out how much one costs, plus Like Melissa I usually have most of the fixins here.
I do know a 2lb bag of cheese makes at least 4 pizzas, if the guys put it on, if I put it one we get at least 6!
Plus we put on more toppings the Little Ceasars does. So for us to order you would have to add $ per extra topping, like extra ham or extra whatever. Then everyone here gets their own pie, ds#1 only cheese, ds#2 cheese olive pinealppe and mushrooms etc.

Oh definitly.
Those little ceasear pizza's have NO flavor, at least the ones near us are like that, domino's tastes like cardboard, and pizza hut is too greasy but strangely enough has like NO cheese to make it greasy! LOL

Dh only likes round table, and the smallest size dh will buy, made the way dh likes it ends up to be around 12$. Normally he buys the ones that are around 21$...delievered with tip that ends up around 27$ sometimes. I have to admit they really are good pizza's, if from the right location.

So far I can make pretty good english muffin pizza's. I buy the 6 pack of muffins for a dollar, a small can of tomtato sauce for .10. The cheese I use comes out to maybe .75
Since he doesn't like store bought pepperoni he will eat it just plain cheese, but i'll top mine with whatever I have on hand...a tad bit of mushrooms/pineapple/tomato's/bell pepper etc...

I think it is cheaper to make it myself. I buy the cheese when it is on sale (about 2.50/lb. and use about 1/2 lb.). For the sauce I often use loss leader spaghetti sauce (Prego sausage and roasted garlic is good; I use just part of the jar and use the leftovers sometime soon with pasta) or a 15 oz can of tomato sauce mixed with 1 tsp. oregano and 1 tsp. garlic powder. I once figured out that the flour I get on sale ends up being about 7 cents per cup. Yeast I buy in bulk and only use 2 tsp. Onions, peppers, etc. are usually in the house.

I, of course have hardly any idea LOL. But I was going to make a pizza this week also.

I think it's probably more expensive here but the shop bought ones don't seem to have much toppings (or the kids don't like them) and they aren't big enough but I can't fit two in the oven.

That's why I was going to try making one.

Cheese is expensive here too and I've just realised you seem to be able to buy loads in bulk but we don't get anything in bulk (as far as I know?)

It may be cheaper for me--if I had the already had the ingredients at home, but I don't. At any rate, it doesn't taste nearly as good, so if I want pizza, I buy it.

However, a one topping pizza costs $11.80 here, so that's rare that we get it.

We can get 3 large pizzas (1 cheese, 1 supreme, 1 pepperoni) for under 16 at a local pizzeria and they tast good. I never made hm pizza, so I wouldn't know the cost in it.

I just buy it as a treat!:D

Definately cheaper here- I buy the cheeses on sale and freeze them.

Toppings- whatever is left over in the fridge! Good way to use the odds and ends of the rest of the week's food stuff. Just toss it on a pizza and the kiddo's will eat it.

I make my own crusts too- buy the yeast at Sam's.

Now my best friend and I get together to OAMC and we make 14 pizza's at a time for less than $10. (BTW- they freeze perfectly in 2 gallon ziplock bags)

I calculated it out once & I think it came out to something like $2 for two "extra-large" "meat lover's" - but I do everything from scratch - dough, sauce, etc....like CJ, I also buy bulk block cheese and shove it through the food processor then freeze it....I make my saice in one huge batch then freeze it in "2 pizzas" size servings....same with toppings - I buy the pepperoni in a stick and slice it then freeze it in "2 pizzas" baggies - sausage, ground beef, and ham too....whatever veggies I have on hand can go on it too....Saturday nights have been our homemade pizza nights for about 10 years now!

Plus - they just taste better!!

This is a rough estimate of the cost here in Missouri.
~Pizza crust packets. 3/$1 I use 2 to make 1 round pizza
~sausage $1.50 for the WM brand and I use about 1/3 so about .50
~sauce .19x2 I use tom. sauce with garlic powder, basil, salt , pepper, thyme, and oregano plus I never use all of ir so I can use some for mazzerella dunkers for Alex
~pepperoni .99
~ onion. maybe 1/2 a cup so .30?
~ maz. cheese I buy the WM brand so maybe about $2.50
~plus anything else I have that might be good on pizza

So it probably isn't cheaper but it is deffanately better, plus I know I've washed my hands

We do homemade here, no nearby pizza place anyway.
We usually do pizza night on Sundays. We usually do a broccoli & cheese(sauteed broccoli & garlic and oil on dough, then cheese.) and a sausage & cheese. Delish!

Definitely cheaper for us homemade ... only in a pinch do we ever order take out pizza ... it's way too greasy for our liking. The one exception is when we're back visiting in Canada and we can get our favorite (mine is with green olives) as a treat.

DH has made HM pizza 2-3 times a month for as many years as I can remember and we all much prefer them over take-out. He uses the breadmaker for the dough, low-fat cheese that I buy bulk and freeze in portion sizes, and whatever toppings we have on hand or fancy at the time. One breadmaker dough recipe makes two pizzas and if DS isn't home that weekend, we have leftovers for lunches! :D

Those days working at a pizza place when DH was a teen have sure paid off. ;)

My dh is a pizza fiend and would eat pizza every day of the week if I let him! We usually order out a couple times a month, totally around $15-20 each time! Anyway, I will admit that hm pizza is much less expensive to make since, like most others, I already have most ingredients on hand. In fact, I have to pick up a couple things at the grocery store, but I'm hoping to make hm pizza this week or next. Maybe I can try to appease dh's cravings and save $ at the same time!

It's probably about $4 cheaper per 2 pizzas for us to make at home. BUT we have to drive 17 miles to pick it up and 17 miles back. We only ever get pizza if we're driving through anyway.

HM pizza is an awesome way to use up leftovers in the fridge- that extra couple tbsp of speghetti sauce with ground hamburg- that extra link of sausage, taco cheese that will be moldy before you get to di taco night again.. So for me, the only real cost is the price of the flour to make the crust.

On the rare occasion we order pizza from the corner store down the road (it's not bad, plus there's no pizza chains here). But that's only if DH can't wait the 90 mins for the dough to mix and rise in the bread machine. But 3 Cups of flour (especially when I can get 5 lbs on sale for 69 cents) is lot cheaper than the $9.99 pizza down the road.

try using a loaf of French Bread, split down the middle like a hot dog bun (or mini's on hot dog buns)

Spread with leftover spaghetti sauce, with or without meat, chopped sandwich deli meats, or leftover bits or no meat,

some diced up mushroom, onion, olives, red pepper or so

and top with grated mozzarella, that you didn't grate,

just buzzed thru the food processor

because you like your knuckles the way they are now, not all over cuts and scrapes like after grating cheese. ;)

AND
slip it into the oven at 350 sitting up high and pretty on a metal rack above a foil lined cookie sheet (catches the drips!) till it gets all toasty, and the cheese melts and bubbles a bit.:D

and if there are leftovers, slice into lunch size portions, wrap well in plastic wrap and freeze to take for lunches, just microwave and eat!

ooops you just did an OAMC meal (heheheheh, Once a month cooking, or freezer meals)

Can I make it cheaper compared to a $5 pizza? No. But that's because we use all organic ingredients. The organic mozzarella alone costs $4.29 (reg. price). Is mine healthier? Yes.

I use an extremely simple pizza crust recipe from Marnie's Kitchen Shortcuts by Marnie Swedberg. We use tomato sauce with a bit of Italian seasoning mixed in for the sauce and just sprinkle on the cheese. We no longer eat beef or pork so just eat cheese pizzas.
