Do you have an easy way to clean oven racks? I have a new oven, and already the racks look like they've been run thru the mill

I can't stand the smell and fumes from oven cleaner, and an SOS pad doesn't do a good enough job for me. Thanks for your help!!

Put the oven racks in a dark trash bag. Add ammonia, tie up the bag and place in the sunshine for the afternoon. Remove the oven racks and hose off the black gunk, then wash with soap and water.

I use to clean base housing and that is exactly the way we did it. To help with the cracks etc. I found some wire brushes at Big Lots a while back that did a great job. To clean the oven use baking soda and amonia, mix together into a paste brush over inside of oven let set over night, use a green scrubbie (scotch makes a good one .33 -.45) to get out the more stubborn spots, but for the most part the paste will clean the oven very well.

Thanks gals! I will try the ammonia in the bag trick- I've never heard of anything like that before! How much ammonia do I add? The whole bottle (or whatever it comes in) so the racks are soaking in it? Or do the fumes just kind of dissolve the gunk? Thanks again!

I just put enough in so that the racks are soaking in the ammonia- I think the fumes do most of the work.
