View Full Version : How I try to save electricity.

Here is what I do to save on electricity:

-when I cook potatoes, I cut them as small as I can. I use my electric kettle to boil the water, then add it to my pot. It uses less electricity than getting my stove top to make the water boil.

-Again, I used to , boil my water with the electric kettle, when wanting hot water for washing dishes. It consumes less than the water tank.

-I cook rice this way: Again, use the electric kettle and boil the exact amount of water I need to cook my rice. Add to my pot with rice. Put the cover and let still for an hour. Rice is cooked with no electricity from the stove top. Use a heavy pot with heavy cover. It works better. Cover it also with a thick towel to save the heat in the pot.

-I set my washer timer to 7 minutes only. I read on a frugal site, that it was enough to detach the soil from the clothes. More than that, your clothes only wish-wash in dirty water.

All I can say, is the less you you use your stove top or oven, the better it is. Any electric pans, pots or slow cooker saves 80 % of electricty.

If I find anything new, I will post it!:) I hope this helps!

Thanks Lucie for the tips.

My water heater is gas though. I do my rice the same way and it always cooks wonderful that way. My washing machine is set as low as it can go as well. I agree, you sure don't need to be washing those clothes for 30 minutes like some washing machines do.

I accidentally found a way to save on electricity when it came to laundry....

Our water lines are not connected to the washer...the previous owner hadn't gotten that far. Rather than make a mess of the basement trying to hook it up, the dh decided to get an adapter for the sink and we would fill the washer with a garden hose.

At first I turned the washer on so it would start as soon as it hit the water level. But I had an AHA moment....I timed the washer (I overflowed it once) to see how long it took to fill. When the timer goes off, I turn off the water AND turn on the machine! Why eat the electric when I have to watch the washer anyway.

Every little bit helps. Now if I could just get the kids to turn off the lights when they leave a room....sigh...
