Our next mission is getting all our ceilings and fixtures cleaned. ~~Ceilings, fans, ceiling light fixtures

Here are some tips on ceiling fans:

This is just what it sounds like. Ceiling fans are wonderful aids in heating and cooling as well as being attractive, but they do need a little attention twice a year. Every fall and spring you should:

Turn the fan off, usually by pulling a chain -- the upper one if there are two -- until the blades stop turning

Check for an oil hole on top of the motor -- if there is one, add 5 - 6 drops of light machine oil

Clean the motor housing -- dusty, isn't it!

Clean each blade and blade iron -- use a little Murphy's Oil Soap® if necessary, never a detergent

Dry each piece with a soft cloth as you go

Set the fan to blow UP for the heating season and DOWN for the cooling season -- push a switch up or down, or reverse the angle of the blades (older Hunter® models).

I have a few of these to do. :dis:

Heather, on the textured ceilings, I vacuum them, the smooth ones get washed down. :)

I reach up with my ostrich down duster, and give the ceiling, corners and fan blades a swish.

If you don't flick up as you finish a swipe, the dust stays trapped. Crack the handle of your duster on your ankle to release the dust near the floor where it can be vacuumed up.

I do use a Hepa filter vacuum, it doens't spread the dust back into the air, but even if you don't have a Hepa vacuuming the dust is still better than nothing at all.

I use my down duster to clean my metal venetian blinds -- just straight swipes, no flicking up. Turn blinds to both sides and they are done.

Light fixtures and hanging chains, same thing.

Then I use it to swipe the tops of the doors, door frames and the one set of pinch pleated cloth drapes I have in the house.

Oh and speaking of the drapes, I like to hang them by their hooks out on my clothes line on windy spring and fall days without rain.

Blows the dust off quite nicely.

Avoid pollen season.

Winter's storms work well too, shake the snow off before bringing inside.

No dust, no dust mites when they freeze their little tushies off.

Finally am finished with this one. Had some mighty dusty ceiling fans though. Now they are nice and clean.
