View Full Version : Brainstorm - save on your water bill Chea 05-17-2004, 02:27 AM What are some of the ways you save water? Darlene 05-17-2004, 07:22 AM We have a well so we don't get a bill but do try to conserve, especially hot water. ~I knock on the bathroom door yelling to Dd that "Times up, you've been in here long enough."The rest of us get in & get out asap.:D ~Use water miser on the dishwasher ~rainwater or creekwater to water plants sometimes ~Don't keep the water running when doing tasks ~use those water limiting thingys on the shower and sink faucets sunshine 05-17-2004, 08:15 AM In times of drought-- we do the following: multiple people use the same water for baths, that water then gets used to flush the toilet. use the wringer washer for laundry-- I can do 5 or more loads of laundry in the amount of water used for 1 load in my other washer. The water from the laundry gets used to water the garden. We don't water the lawn. QuilterMom 05-17-2004, 08:19 AM We have a well now too, but used to be on city water at our old house so we got hit with not only a bill for actual usage but a sewer bill that was based upon # of gallons used. - Collected water in a watering can stuck under the a/c condensation drain to water outdoor potted plants. - Fill the sink with water and wash all veggies and fruits at once rather than running the water for each individual one. - Didn't pre-rinse dishes going into the dishwasher. - Turn the water off while brushing teeth. - Use bathwater for watering outdoor plants. - Didn't fill the tub too full for ds's baths. - Take shorter showers or something I couldn't do... Turn on the water and get yourself and your hair wet and then turn the water off. Lather up and wash your hair then turn the water back on when time to rinse off. - Do as large of loads as laundry as possible instead of lots of small loads. Lori Biever-Launder 05-17-2004, 02:49 PM This sounds silly, but I use my old ice cubes (if I am planning of dumping them out) to water my plants with! We also don't water the back yard in the summer. Nobody but us sees it, so why bother? Yes, I miss the green grass back there, but I need the $ more! graci42 05-19-2004, 11:47 PM I've fine tuned water use...my water bill dropped by 1000 cubic feet...how many gallon's are in a cubic foot? I use tubs for dish washing (by hand) and recycle the rinse water for flushing the commode. I recycle the rinse cycle of laundry for the next wash cycle and use wash cycle water for flushing, too. Children have a tendency of leaving a 1/2 full glass of water on counter...when it gets warm they would dump it down drain...not now...I use it for watering the pets and plants. Also...when running water for dishes (hot) while waiting for temp to rise, I run it in a container...use for pets or gal. jug in frig for drinking. My water bill dropped by 8 dollars this month. I think I can do better! I will do better! |
