View Full Version : EATING OUT or EATING IN SAVINGS?

Hi Everyone,
Who feels that they can save more by eating in than eating out all the time?
We are just starting to think this one thru more as the schedule that we are keeping just seems to keep us out at the times we should be eating. However, I do have many different coupon books that we can use for B1G1F meals.

We were looking at some of the meat prices the other day and the other half mentioned that for the prices of the meats HERE in Daytona, it may be almost easier/cheaper for us to eat out rather than eat in.

REASONS:

1 - Fewer dishes to wash. (I am physically unable to stand and wash dishes) But, when I run my dishwasher it takes up more $ for the electric and water bills.

2 - MY own meal is usually 2 meals in 1 since I just eat about 1/2 of my meal. So, actually I get 2 meals for the price of my one meal.

3 - We use coupons that allow us to eat 1 meal FREE when we purchase one. Then, not only do I end up with my meal FREE, I have 2 meals free b/c of having my leftovers to eat the next day.

With the start of the new month, I am going to chart out what we spend on eating out and what we spend on groceries. Then, at the end of the month, I can compare the 2 figures and see which is best for us.

There is just the 2 of us and we do NOT have doubles or triples at our grocery stores for shopping.

Thanks for your input posts.

I am new to this message board so this is my first message.... hopefully looking to learn alot.

Anyway... I see what you mean by the B1G1F coupons, and that you only eat half. So for dinner you could spend $4 and get a whole meal and then another for free. Since you don't eat alot you have leftovers. But when eating in you could be doing the same thing on this part.... you could cook enough for a few days. And then would have less pans/pots to clean over the next few days. I think this all depends on what you are cooking at home and then see what you pay for a meal when cooking in. Also eating home is usually more healthy for you also. But then that depends what you are cooking at home too and what you buy when you eat out. But having those coupons when eating out is almost a must if you want to save any money. Did I make any sense?? Or was I just mumbling?

I know that I usually cook the meat and potatoes, but I let him decide on the veggetable, since I eat basically cooked carrots and a few green beans. (I grew up eating ONLY Corn for a veg.)

I'm all for cooking up the food in one day and then just warming it up the next few days, but my fridge has the freezer on the bottom and it has a small fridge section, but as far as fewer pots and pans, wouldn't we STILL HAVE the SAME number of pans to do when heating up the food the next day? That's an interesting point to look into.

We are having a hard time finding decent meat prices at the grocery stores. Seems that the meat QUALITY is going downhill these days. /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_frown.gif It's even enough to make you /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif your eyes trying to figure out the best way to get GOOD NOURISHMENT and good prices at the same time.

THANKS, Kevin for posting. It was good to hear from someone. /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

HEY.... I was just thinking... (I know, that's dangerous for me. /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif You're in Toledo, OH and I'll be heading that way in a few weeks for my niece's wedding. It would be great to chat with you on the phone if you wanted. I'm harmless. HONEST. /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif

She lives in Sandusky and so I have to travel up that way to get to the wedding. I'll ride w/my Mom, though since I'm not THAT familiar with the Sandusky area. How far is Toledo from there? Thanks.

Kay, I live off of an I-75 exit, which I know goes all the way down to Florida. Sandusky is about 40 miles east of me. Not too far, we go there all the time for Cedar Point. If you wanna chat sometime just drop me an email and let me know. My email is kevin_thoman@hotmail.com

Hi Kay. I am new to this board but was wondering the same thing you were. Last month I kept track of the money we spent eating out. This month we are trying to eat in. Then I will see what the difference is. I think we are spending too much money on food for just 2 people.

Hi WooWoo,

WELCOME to the usave site. I was going to have ALL of August to track our spending, but alas, I was called away for a family wedding so, I didn't get to continue, but I'll try again in October. Have to save the $$$$ for the Super Soap Weekend trip (It's our ANNUAL VACATION) in a way and then, I'll see how we do in December.

I know I can get these coupon books for about the cost of one meal, so it's well worth the money. We'll most likely get another book next year. I know the guy who prints them up, so he gives me a discount on them, too which helps. Now, I'll just have to find others in the Daytona Beach area and see if I can get them to get the book from me and maybe he will give me mine for the extras "sold". /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif It's an idea at least. THEN, ALL of the savings from the coupon book would be PURE SAVINGS. /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_lol.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_rolleyes.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_wink.gif

Kay - I like the way you think. Pure savings sure would be nice. I have a coupon book we use when we go out too. The problem is there are so many places we like to go eat that don't have coupons. So we spend a lot of money. Do you only eat at places in the book?

Woo,

I try to do that. Of course, when BK has 2 value meals for $5.00 that's hard to beat, too.

We try to get the best value, and try to use the coupon book.

Suggestion, is that the coupon book that is the "Entertainment 2001" (whatever the year is?)

Take the time in the left side on those and write down your savings amount for each coupon you used. OR, take the saved amount and put it in a jar and DO NOT TOUCH that amount for any reason and see how much you have next year to pay for your new book... then, take the leftover monies you have (if any) and treat yourself to a restaurant NOT in the coupon book.

Good Luck and Happy Eating. /phpbb/images/smiles/icon_smile.gif
