Here is the difference in our heating bill from no insulation to insulation. I can't wait until we get the m/bedroom done to see how much more of a difference it makes.

~ Oct 18 - Nov. 16/02 we used 319.008 cu metres of natural gas. Our bill was $124.04 (no insulation)

~Oct 17 - Nov. 15/03 we used 154.004 cu metres of natural gas. Our bill was $74.00 (all insulation except m/bedroom)

~Oct. 18 - Nov 17/04 we used 132.002 cu metres of natural gasl. Our bill was $64.07.

We've cut our heat way back this year and dressed warmer. We've also had 3 increases since last year at this time.

Gotta love insulation!!

Early Bird, we put in all new doors and windows 2 years ago (except 3 front windows in the living room and one kitchen window). We have acrylic plastic on those.

When they put the doors in, they used very expensive weather stripping.

Our heat (natural gas furnace) is set at 65F during the day, at 60F during the night. We've learnt to add more blankets and all 3 of the kids stayed covered up. I also will turn the heat down further if its a nice sunny day and open all the blinds to let the sun heat the house.

We all wear heavier clothing and if were watching a movie and its cool, we just get a blanket and snuggle under it.

That is so awesome CJ - I can't wait to check the difference in ours now!! What kind of insulation and where did you put it? I think this house came with R4 (does that sound right??) and NONE in the ceiling + we have a vault where the two halves came together (manufactured home) is yours a traditional stickbuilt flat ceiling or like ours?? They just raised our rate in August and got another rate increase approval for December!!:bang:  Does your furnace have an electric fan?? And is your house heated on one level or two (or more)?? sorry for all the questions but you are the frugal guru around here!!

Kimmee, here is what we did. We have a 1500 sq. ft. home, 2 storey and over 100 years old. When we purchased our home, there was already insulation in the attic. Our home has all kinds of little peaks but insulation had been blown in. I'm not sure the thickness but next spring we want to have more blown in there. We need to set aside $$ for that.

There was absolutely NO insulation in the walls - zippo. Not even shavings!!!!

So we did the following. We did all the work ourselves. (We had to tear out plaster, then lathe. In the living room we had to tear out gyproc, plaster and then lathe.)

~we changed the windows to dual thermal with argon. Many of the windows were cracked and although they had storm windows, there were gaps outside and the windows were has old as our home.
~except for our m/bedroom we made the 4 inch walls into 6 inch walls. We had 2x4's cut into 2x2's and nailed them onto the 2x4's making them 6 inch walls. We then insulated with R20 insulation. We plan on doing the same with our m/bedroom in a couple of weeks.

Our furnace has an electric fan.

Our home has heat registers in all the rooms except the bathroom. It can get mighty cold in there when your having a bath, but we put up with it. We just dry really quickly!!! :D

~One of the first places to look at when your wanting to cut down your heating bills are windows and doors. Its amazing how much can be saved by installing new windows and doors. Next is insulating the attic, then the walls.

Watch how often your outside door is opened. Close it has quickly as possible. When we are going outside, we all go at the same time, rather than opening and closing the doors a zillion times.

Weather stripping around your doors will make a huge difference. Cover your windows with plastic if you cannot afford to replace your windows. Every little bit adds up. Because of having a cat, we went and purchased sheets of acrylic plastic and cut it ourselves and are using that in the 4 windows we still need to replace.

Kimmee, we've had 3 raises this past year and were looking at another one in Feb.
