I got our electric bill in for this month and about fainted. It was for $119.93!! We keep our heat turned way down and don't use electricity unless absolutely needed. I can't figure it out..........

what are some things that you do to help cut costs on your electric bill?

I will stop complaining. I thought Illinois was high on electric but mine only ran about $80. to $85.00 a month in the winter. Will be higher with the Christmas lights but due to allergies I turn the ac on as soon as the heat goes off. Then it jumps way up. cau

No one needs to stop complaining! The cost of living is different in different parts of the country, so the rates are different. Roxy, your bill may be quite high for where you live, but low where Sara lives.

So, does anyone have any tips for Roxy?

You;re right about not stopping the complaining - my bill was always around $50 when I lived by myself, and when I moved in with DH (and all of his computers and servers and whatever) it went to $100-$120.

Here's a few things that I do, although I'm always on the lookout for more:

1. Unplug things you don't use that often - I keep my coffeemaker plugged in because I use it every day, but keep my toaster unplugged because we only use it about once a week. I have heard that just plugging it in uses some electricity.
2. Turn off lights when not in use
3. Don't use my self-cleaning feature on my oven - this adds about $5 to my electric bill!

The only good thing about all of DH's computers is that I have not turned the heat on yet. They generate enough heat by themselves. (Of course, if we were just going for heat, electric heat is cheaper than running 8-9 computers..)

summer nearly kills us in texas. every "winter" for the past few years we have seen the bills inch higher and higher, they're always increasing the prices, no matter how little we use during the colder months. use to be (3yrs ago) our bill was about $65, now its $109. We turn the ac off usually in Oct. and don't use it till april/may whenever the humidity gets too much. I hate it here, the weather is sooo retarded. I wish that I lived somewhere that I could tell that its winter when its suppose to be winter..not this 30 degrees on day, 80 the next, sorry for venting.

Ours increased $10 or $11 this month and I thought it would go down. I was being so ANAL about turning everything off. Oh my!

I agree with others. Unplug everything you are not using at the time INCLUDING the water heater if electric.

The only way to really compare is to see how many kilowatts we each use. My last bill was about $70.00 dollars. I have been using the electric blanket alot, otherwise I get leg cramps. I try to stay under 800 kilowatts, but its hard in the winter. We put a breaker box right on top of our new water heater and I turn it off after a shower and don't turn it back on until the next day, usually afternoon or evening. I try to do dishes and shower in the same time of day. It only takes about 30 minutes to get all the hot water I need. But yes I have forgotten to turn it on for 2 days and jumped into a cold shower. But the cost of propane will ruin my budget this year, even with also using a small woodburner in the kitchen. But as I get older, I need more convenience.
