As I was cooking dinner. We're having hamburger gravy over leftover potatoes.

I boil my hamburger is a good amount of water. I drain the water into a bowl. The hamburger then goes into the gravy.

The water goes into the fridge. When the fat seperates and hardens, I take the fat off and freeze it for use in gravies, frying, etc.

The water/broth will make a beef/vegetable soup.

Not too bad for one lowly lb. of hamburger.

Good thinking! :thumb: I've poured the water out after bulk cooking hamburger (don't beat me Debbie :D )-- didn't think of saving it for my soup. I'll save it from now on!

What advantage does boiling have over crumbling in a frying pan?

TIA. :)

Lots less mess, less time (I can do 20 lbs of boiled hamburger in the time it takes to do 2 lbs, fried), I don't have to stand over the boiled burger-- and I have all that wonderful broth for soup bases!

It's funny about boiling hamburger......

My friends had a dog that had pretty severe digestive problems and couldn't eat dog food lots of time without bringing it back up. So the vet told them to boil hamburger and rice together (1 lb. hamburger, 1 cup of rice and 2 cups of water). You know what? I used to envy the dog because it always smelled so good when it was cooking. Maybe I should add a few seasonings and try it out for myself. Talking about a frugal dinner....DOG FOOD!!

LOL too funny

I had a dog that when he would have runny stools the vet said the same thing - boiled hamburg and white rice - must be an effective remedy. Guess it couldn't be that bad for use either!

Boiling it also removes alot of the fat. When you drain it, keep the water and defat it after it cools. I run water over the meat, just to get alittle bit more off of it. It makes it about as less fat than some of the other lowfat..high price ground beef

Thanks for the kind words. I don't figure I have anything new to add to most things. I post here, and I guess those that are interested will read it. I don't plan on making any money off my ideas or rewording of ideas that I've gleaned over the years.

I'm glad you find my ideas , etc. helpful.

Sunshine,

I guess I'm slow, but where are you getting the gravy that the hamburger is going into?

I get the saving broth, grease, etc. Great idea for this!!

I've never boiled hamburger either.

Thanks,

Dawn

I was making gravy for hamburger gravy over biscuits -- then just posted what I do when ever I use hamburger for things like this. Something I do automatically, but have learned that many don't do these things - so I posted to get others to thinking about it.

Thank you. I'm slow this morning.

I will definitely try this. I can definitely use any ideas like this to stretch things farther.

I look forward to more of your ideas.

The only problem I have with this is that I would never fry anything with hamburger fat. It's probably the worst cholesterol you can put into your body.

Reusing the water, though is genius!
