Boy will my family be in electricity withdrawls.... My electric for the month of December was, can you believe...........285.00!!!!!! For one, yes one, month... No more heat when not necessary, no more lights, that kind of thing.. (well I will be making sure only minimal are on). I am sooooooo mad.. I have never in my life ever paid anywhere near that amount... UGHHHH!!! Granted it was a bit colder last month, but I didn't think we used that much electricity..:( :( :(

Some evenings Matthew and I will use our oil lamps, so we don't have to run any lights. Instead of television, we will play games, cards, etc etc.

Just a couple tips...........;)

Ouch, sorry you got that whopper. I know one Mom who will be chasing her kids from room to room shutting things off.

Do you have electric heat? If you do, I'm surprised the bill isn't more.

Yes, I would expect an even hgiher bill if you have electric heat.

It's just the opposite here - natural gas is more expensive than electric.

Did they by chance do an estimated reading instead of an actual reading?

Definitely check to see if it was estimated! They tried that little trick on us last year and I called them and read the meter to the company...They estimated twice what actual use was.

One thing we do here is use very little lights in the daytime if we are home as we have great natural lighting in our living room.  Don't know if that may be something to help you out.

Last year, due to high natural gas rates, I know some people in my area had bills of around $400.  Thankfully, we have electric and ours was about a quarter of that amount.

Carrie - We have all electric now (our old house had gas plus a gas water heater and I hated it) and haven't even had to turn on our heat this winter. (We actually had to turn our a/c on today  )

I feel so badly for everyone having huge electric bills this winter!

It was hard for us to find a house when we were searching because it seemed so many had gas and I was just not interested. Besides the rates being ridiculous, gas makes me a bit nervous (such as gas leaks). I know they make monitors and it probably has a lot to do with growing up in a home that was all electric, but I hope we always have all electric in our future homes.

Oh Bonnie I'm sorry to hear that! I wish none of you had to live with electric heat!

I feel bad for those who electric bills are so high. I thought my $123 was high. :blush:We use oil for heat up here in Maine and that can be expensive. We tried to keep our heat down to 65 degrees and our pipes froze in the sub 0 degree weather plus I get colds and virual infection easy because of my heart problems. I can only afford 100 gal of oil at a time because per gal it is around $2.00. If I bought 200 gals like we did last winter it would take my hd whole paycheck. He gets paid bi-weekly.:bang:

Hmmmm...anything goofy going on with your furnace? Causing the fan to run more? Hot water heater? Defrost your freezer, lately?

We replaced our windows and now the furnace runs less, so the gas and elecrric bills are both lower. Defrosted freezer,so will see that on the next bill.

Our bill was REALLY REALLY high too! It had never hit over $180 the whole time we lived here. This past month, our bill was $234. I was furious.

I am trying to keep lights off. And keep the wood burning stove going. And the TV off. And the furance set on a lower temp. The thing that ticks me off is that our use (which they show right on the bill, compares last year to this year) is overall LOWER than the past two years.

:bang: :bang: I feel like the bills just keep going up, phone, computer, utilities, insurance, etc....it's going to get to the point, where we won't be able to feed our family. I am really fusterated with the utilities.
