Alright everyone, we're out of the kitchen and into the master bedroom. It's winter, and during the winter, people automatically go into a nesting mode. Especially in our bedrooms. Whereas in the summer we like our bedrooms to be cool and breezy, free of clutter so the breeze can float over us on a hot, summer night, in the winter, we enjoy having stuff piled up around us, creating an atmosphere of the cavelike warmth that the bears enjoy while in hibernation. (Especially those of us trying to keep our heating bills down! I keep my house at 58-60 in the winter...trust me...I'm hibernating at night!)
However, it is time to BREAK FREE of this cave of clutter in the bedroom! Want to be warm at night? Throw on an extra blanket that you'll be able to find after you've purged the junk that was taking up all of your space!
Before putting you on the bedroom challenge, let me be blunt and share with you the horror that is my master bedroom. My bed always has some sort of towel or clothing on it until it's time to crawl in at night. Then, whatever was on the bed, is now on the floor.
My nightstand has a lamp, two books, a jar of Vaseline for my kids chapped lips, my school id badge, three used tissues, Julia's inhaler, the remote, an empty cup, and the phone (who's charging base is on the other side of the room) all on top. If my arm flings out in the night while I'm sleeping...CRASH!!! It all comes tumbling to the floor.
Dh's nightstand has receipts that he pulls out of his wallet, a lamp, and I think that's it, on top.
Dh's armoir has the baby monitor, our alarm clock (has to be across the room on top of the armoir so we have to get out of bed to hit snooze...by the time we get there, we're already awake so we just get up), his deodorant, his cologne, the box from my pedometer, some unmatched socks, an extension cord, a book, and about an inch thick layer of dust on it.
There is an armchair next to my nightstand. I don't remember the pattern on it because it is covered with clothes that were not too dirty that they needed to be washed, but the got neatly laid there after we took them off. Then, the next outfit, and the next, and the next, etc. There are also empty hangers on this chair, along with 5 or 6 of Julia's books that she likes to read before bedtime.
At the foot of the bed are two round, wire laundry baskets. One is empty (I put away some laundry yesterday.) The other is filled with unmatched socks that I need to pair up and put away.
The floor on dh's side of the bed is FILLED with clothes. He tells me that these clothes aren't dirty, or they are his exercise clothes that he puts out the night before to wear the next morning (after exercising, he puts those sweaty clothes directly in the laundry room...don't worry.). I don't even go on his side of the bed because I get all itchy from the mess.
My dresser is one of those that the base is dresser drawers and the top is a mirror and shelves on either side. The base has some of the kids clothes that are clean but need to be put in their rooms, some boxes that I haven't gotten to from when we moved, dust, some jewelry that I need to put back in my jewelry box, etc.
Oh, and there is an old tv on the floor of our bedroom that needs to be put in the spare room.
Are you frightened? You will be when I post pictures of this room. (Dh reconfigured the computer and needs to reinstall the photo software.)
When I tell you I am in the trenches with you, trust me...I AM THERE WITH YOU! So, for the next few weeks, we'll be working on our master bedrooms. Yours (hopefully) may not be as bad as mine, but I'm sure we all have some problem areas in our sleeping quarters! So, go take an honest look at your master bedroom. Feel free to share if you like. I'm sure you'll agree, it can't be as bad as mine. I'm embarassed that I've let it get to this state. I spend so much time on the rest of the house, I figure that no one ever goes in our room except dh and I and the kids. It's time to declutter and purge just for me. My room should look nice because it's MINE! Yours too!
