View Full Version : what to do with leftover syrup from canned fruit? Sara Noel 01-17-2005, 11:09 PM Looking for ideas to use this vs. tossing it down the drain. homesteadmamma 01-17-2005, 11:13 PM My guy Michael absolutely loves those juices. He watches until I drain the can and then he drinks them. At least it doesn't get thrown down the drain. bamamomto4 01-17-2005, 11:15 PM Someone here usually drinks it. Missy 01-17-2005, 11:19 PM when you have left over juice, make a fruit flavored icing. You can freeze it for when you ned it to drizzle on pies or cakes. 1 lb powdered sugar in a mixer bowl, drizzle in juice from a can until you get a thick icing, if you like your icing more runny, add more juice or water, a little at a time. I have some frozen for cherry pies I premade and froze. Used the sauce from the can to flavor the icing, they kids practically crawled up my legs to get at the beaters I held over my head. Warning...this is a huge sugar surge. sunshine 01-17-2005, 11:26 PM I use it as the "water" portion for jello. Sometime I have to add water to equal the amount called for, but it adds flavor to the jello (especially if using unflavored gelatin). pip 01-17-2005, 11:38 PM I use it in jello, too. SewCrafty 01-18-2005, 05:58 AM Yep jello here too! :D I also saved and canned the leftover peach juice last summer to use for this also. ;) duckduckgoose007 01-18-2005, 12:34 PM :yeah: Sara Noel 01-18-2005, 12:37 PM Thanks everyone. Zachary likes the peach juice syrup and drinks that, but I often have juice from other canned fruit and I usually just drain it off and kept thinking that there must be some ways I could use it. The jello and icing are great ideas. We eat both here. simplemom 01-18-2005, 12:48 PM I use it to replace the liquid I would put in muffins or small cakes. I also reduce the sugar to my recipe when I do this, because the syrup is already very sweet. It works very well and makes nice muffins and small cakes. :) paelthom 01-18-2005, 02:40 PM Excellent ideas! Here it usually gets drank (by me). I especially like the idea of using it in muffins. Yum! jettsmom 01-22-2005, 02:00 AM I use it in jello too. I just thought of freezing it and using it for ice cubes in drinks, like maybe a punch bowl or for speed setting jello when you don't add fruit to it.. captclearance 01-22-2005, 02:49 AM It depends on if it's juice or syrup...... You can warm the syrup (or juice) in a small sauce pan. Add a bit of water and corn startch and make a fruity pancake / waffle syrup....... good on ice cream too !!!!!!! Won't keep more than a day or too though........ sunshine 01-22-2005, 07:35 AM Originally posted by captclearance It depends on if it's juice or syrup...... It never occured to me to do anything other than have one of us drink it. :thumb: kittykatstrong 10-15-2008, 03:08 AM Wow, some really great ideas that I had never thought of. Ceashels 10-15-2008, 09:34 AM I've used it in scones, but my favorite is to add it to a tall glass of cold milk. santoria 10-15-2008, 05:26 PM my dh boils it and puts it on his icecream or someone drinks it. zakity 10-16-2008, 02:49 AM Popsicles...
