I recently made an appt. at the police dept. to get my 2 younger kids car seats checked to see if my car seats were installed properly. They SO weren't. In fact, to make a long story short. They asked if they could have my car seats. (Expensive, Eddie Bauer ones in fact), replaced them with new ones they had, and taught me how to install them properly. The ones I had, even though they had not been in an accident, just were not safe anymore (Even though they looked new!). One had been stored in the garage for 2 years because my daughter outgrew her carrier and needed the one that used to be her brothers. (hot TEXAS garage and that is a no-no, I didn't know ) They take the old ones and totally destroy them. I now know how to install them securely and tightly. The car seats should not be able to wiggle around any more than 3/4 an inch either way. The kids are "snug as a hug" as the officers put it!
I recommend this to anyone who has kids in a car seat. The car seats are literally USELESS if the child is not securely fastened according to height and weight and properly installed in the seat, and the seat is not properly installed into the car itself.
They said 75% of car seats are not installed correctly.
It could save your childrens lives. Only takes about half an hour. Isn't it worth it? Just call your local police department and ask where to go for a car seat inspection.
