View Full Version : Cash or CC for gasoline?
jlxian 08-22-2005, 03:29 PM I've been wondering how most people are paying for their gasoline --- cash or credit card?
On one of the Sunday morning news shows someone said that despite the higher cost of gasoline, folks are still buying it and driving --- so they must not be feeling the burden of higher costs. And it occurred to me that if it wasn't so easy to pay with a credit card and everyone had to pay cash for their gas that the consumption would go down. And it would be more obvious that folks are feeling the "pinch".
We buy our gas with a credit card for various reasons --- convenience being the main one. Its just easier to pay at the pump and of course then we don't have to carry huge bundles of cash around. But I'm dreading the higher credit card bills each month.
Anyway, I'm just curious -- how about the rest of you? Do you pay with cash or a credit card?
MagsBags 08-22-2005, 03:46 PM We pay cash (debit card), just like with everything else we buy. Gas prices are outrageous... I can't believe how high they are.
I'm still gassing up my mini though because it's summer and there is so much to do, ya know? I was thinking about a nationwide gas-out. Wasn't there something like that last year? Hmmm...
AmyBoz 08-22-2005, 03:55 PM Credit...a cash back gasoline credit card.
Missy 08-22-2005, 03:56 PM cash, we don't own a charge card
YankeeMom 08-22-2005, 04:32 PM cash. always cash.
Michele Annette 08-22-2005, 04:40 PM Cash never credit.
Darlene 08-22-2005, 04:48 PM Cash back credit card & pay in full every month
Dixie 08-22-2005, 05:32 PM I pay 90% of the time with a debit card and the other 10%, with a gas credit card, which is paid in full every month.
homesteadmamma 08-22-2005, 05:46 PM Cash, no cc's here.
nodmicks 08-22-2005, 10:56 PM Cash or the occasional debit card. Were paying our cc's off and haven't used them in ages.
Goodi2shooz 08-23-2005, 12:45 AM cash unless i'm dead broke, the it goes on a gas card to be paid off at the end of every month.
seadream 08-23-2005, 01:20 AM cash, I have never used a credit card to pay for gas
SewCrafty 08-23-2005, 08:50 AM Always cash here too.
baxjul 08-23-2005, 08:53 AM We don't have any credit cards, so only cash here!
Emerald_Mommy 08-23-2005, 10:44 AM Debit card, so we can pay at the pump. I do not enjoy dragging two girls out of the car into a nasty gas station to pay cash! Debit card is our compromise ;)
thrifty gal 08-23-2005, 04:20 PM Well we were using a credit card at a nearby gas station because we got .3 cents off each gallon. I paid the bill in full so not to incur any interest charges. But, the gas station shut down, so now we are paying cash.
justmeD 08-23-2005, 06:09 PM We only use credit cards here and pay at the end of the month. We get incentives for using our CC, so I figure if I have to pay so much for gas, I may as well be seeing something for it. Plus, with two little children, and living in HOT HOT HOT florida, taking them out, paying, then putting them back in, strapping into car seats, etc...is not worth it.
pkellyc 08-23-2005, 10:17 PM Cash here.
bamamomto4 08-24-2005, 10:41 PM Mostly the debit card....if not,cash.....I like the swipe and go.....lol.....I dont thnk we have ever bought gas with a credit card....
UPSyours2 08-25-2005, 06:39 AM I always used my CC but now have a MOBIL SPEEDPASS it's alot easier & getting rewards sometimes! :)

Debit card. But we are pretty much cashless and use the debit card for most of our expenses. DH (who buys most of our gas) is not allowed to carry cash. He says he eats it (buys junk food). We also use electronic bill pay for rent and utilities. We still have budget -- just because we use an electronic payment system doesn't mean we buy whatever we want. For us, using the computer to keep track of our money is a real blessing -- it frees up a lot of time for us and makes our lives in general a lot less about worrying about money.

kaykwilts 08-25-2005, 09:55 AM A Reloadable Walmart Shopping Card. If you use this at the Walmart gas station you get 3 cents off per gallon. This adds up in a years time. Yay! yesterday gas was down to $2.40 at Walmart and with the car I will pay $2.37.
annieacid 08-25-2005, 12:49 PM AAA credit card, which gets paid in full every month. Has a 5% rebate when you pay at the pump at any station, but it's going down to 3% in Sept, which is kind of ticking me. But at least it's still something!
I also get a $50.00 gift certificate to use at any AAA location when I earn 5000 points on the card, so that comes in handy too =) I like to go to conventions, and so I can use that for travel to save $$.
pita1213 08-26-2005, 07:07 PM debit card that i use as a credit card. we bank at a credit union and i get charged a fee to use it as a debit card but not if i use it as a credit card.
we got a consolidation loan a little while back and all of the credit cards are gone. yay!
frugalbutterfly 08-26-2005, 07:16 PM I use to only pay at the pump when the kids where little. Now they are older and they can run in and pay.
Although I have only pumped once in the last nine months, dh thought it would be a good therapy for me to get back into "normal" things, he just did not want to get out of the van in the heat.
We don't have credit cards now either so it would only be cash
