Time To Budget For Holiday Gifts :santasm2:

NEW YORK, Oct. 04, 2005
Fast Fact
Average holiday shopper spends about $700

(CBS) Most people haven't even thought about Halloween costumes, much less holiday gifts. But financial guru Dave Ramsey says we all need to begin planning ahead for the season — a time of year that drives many people into debt.

He visits The Early Show to offer planning advice. A little budgeting now can save you big financial pain later, according to Ramsey.

Q: What's The Best Way To Plan Ahead For Holiday Spending?

A: First of all, know that if you haven't done any planning yet, you can still escape from this year's holiday season debt free. You need to sit down and make a list of

Who you're buying a gift for this year and

How much you plan to spend on each person.

You now have a Christmas budget and you need to either begin putting this money aside. Of course the hard part is sticking to the budget.

Stay tuned Tuesday morning as he will answer more of the most common questions that people have on this topic.

I just saw this on CBS News then went to the website & found out he was also on the other day :( sorry I missed that but only found this info so far!

As I'm cooking Ma's breakfast I heard him say to shop w/cash this way you'll spend less $$$:dollar:

A few years what DH family did was have a collection of how much money we'd think we'd spend on presents for everyone then put this money in the envelope. Basically it was how much money you could afford, so everyone put in a different amount. His Mom & Dad also. The money was totaled up then divided evenly for each person @ this time it was about $100 - $200 gifts per person. It was fun shopping for 1 person but saying it was from everyone. :)

All the Christmas gift lists were left w/the money & then we'd have names picked on Thanksgiving since usually when DH family is all together, except for his brother in MA. So after dinner we'd work on our lists & the deadline for the last of them was before my Birthday December 6th St. Nicks Day! (Christmas like celebration in Europe)

I was :fuming: one year because the long black leather insulated coat I wanted for my only Christmas present I couldn't get because it was $199 so I figured I'd only list this 1 item since I really want it...I'd take quality over quantity DH says we don't have enough to spend this year for $200 presents I need to add more to my list. I found out on my :cake: why...because DH already bought that as part of my birthday gift & needs to know what to buy me for Christmas too! DH & I still did the separate presents just for ourselves & in privacy some of the Victoria Secret outfits he'd buy me.

We don't fill the stockings anymore :( I kinda miss this...but get a lottery ticket to pick, one year they were attached to the mantel or a Christmas tree.

We still pick names on Thanksgiving & I think the limit is now $50 -$100 per person....not more than this & we donate money, food, toys to adopt a family (SIL is in charge of finding the families)

Pick names for presents...This is what DH family does for ALL the adults but SIL 2 kids get spoiled they are into all the video game, BARBIE & BRATZ stuff! I feel bad not having any kids yet but my :paw: girlz :paw: got presents from DH Mom & one of his brothers got them a ceramic doggy cookie jar, also his other brothers dog got this gift too!

Mostly every Christmas DH Mom buys them all treats, except for when she forgot them @ home.

I feel bad for the "girlz" because they are like our only kids now! They should get presents too!

They are very well behaved w/all the food/candy left out on the cocktail table they do not touch/eat unless they are given.
