My mom always bought fresh eggs in flats when I was growing up. I don't even know what they cost per flat here in MI, but wondered if anyone else was used to eating farm fresh and if you can tell the difference.

There's a farm down the road from me that sells fresh eggs. I always want to stop to get eggs, but no one ever seems to be around. We were also going to get chickens back this spring so we could have our own fresh eggs, but of course, I got pregnant. If I can't clean the cat box, I'm sure henhouses are out of the question!

But I've been told there's a huge difference in fresh and store bought eggs. Fresh eggs have an orange yolk and taste better.

My state's Dept of Agriculture, Markets and Food puts out a newsletter everyweek that includes the states averages for the price of grains, eggs- here fresh eggs avg. $1.00 a dozen for large eggs.

We had our own chickens:chicken: until a fox killed them all:grrr: and we decided not to get any more. Any way, there is a difference in farm fresh eggs and store bought; the yolks are more orangey colored, the whites aren't as runny and the shells are thicker and harder to break. Our chickens were free range and their eggs were great, the yolks were dark orange and made baked goods have a nice yellow color. I miss my chickens:weeping:

Dana and Mike gave their chickens away!:chicken: I sure miss them. They laid brown eggs. I thought they were very good. Their egg shells were very thin though and it was difficult to peel them for egg salad.

I saw something in the store yesterday called "cage free" eggs. They are laid by "free" chickens with no drugs or chemicals. I guess they would be considered organic. I don' t buy fresh eggs, only because I don't know where to get them!

Fesh eggs are also more "meatier" and fluffier, if you know what I mean. The difference is I dont care for fertilized eggs. Thats why when we get ours we wont have a Rooster.

I like fresh eggs better, but my girlfriend that I bought them from had to move (divorce) so no more yummy, orange, think shelled eggs. :mad:

I can tell the difference. I grew up on a farm but we never had chickens. When we got some when we moved here I couldn't believe the fresh taste. The yolks sit up nice when you are frying them, the colour is brighter and they actually have a taste! Yum!!

The eggs you buy in the store are anemic!! I am lucky enough to have 22 of my very own "girls" for our own fresh eggs. They make all the difference in baking.
KathiS, the reason that it is difficult to peal fresh eggs is that because they ARE fresh. If you are going to hard boil fresh eggs they shoud sit for a week in the fridge. The ones from the store are, goodness, I don't know how old. The longer they sit the bigger the air pocket becomes, thus making it easier to peel.

We buy farm fresh eggs as well and there is a huge difference in the ones from the store and the farm fresh. Besides looking different, (better color) they taste way different than ones purchased in a store.

Nothing quite like farm fresh eggs.

I haven't bought eggs in a store for months. I have 3 laying hens (which haven't given me any eggs for a couple months), but my sister has a large brood. I usually either get my eggs from her or else there's a guy down the road that sells farm fresh for .50/dozen! That's way cheaper than in the store! I agree that the whites are firmer and yolks are more orange... as for taste, I haven't really noticed, but I don't usually eat eggs plain.
