View Full Version : Someone clue me in on potty training
Sara Noel 07-23-2002, 05:08 PM My son has zero interest. I would so love for him to be potty trained before the next little one is due, but I can barely get him to sit on the potty.
I have tried everything from toys, stickers, books...anything.
I kid you not, he will sit for an hour and not go.
I thought we made a huge breakthrough when at the store and he begged for Blues Clues underwear. We get home and put them on him and he cried and whined that he wanted his diaper.
He loves to brush his teeth and do responsible type things and has a fascination with the bathroom, but this potty training thing is not going well at all.

MANDERS 07-23-2002, 05:32 PM I forget how old is your ds?Mommy memory sucks doesn't it?Anywho I used the naked method with Lauren. It worked real well, just let her run around with a big shirt on with no underpants and then she peed down her leg once and hasn't since(this was 2yrs ago)LOL might be harder with a boy.Just keep trying with him and offer the big boy underwear.HE'll let you know when he is ready.Maybe have him go to the bathroom with your dh and let him act like daddy for a while.
PrairieRose 07-23-2002, 07:00 PM Boys are much harder than girls and they seem to show less interest longer too. I know you want him trained by the time the baby gets here but it may not happen. Just find something that he really wants like the blues clues underwear and use it to really motivate him. I have a friend who's working on her 3 yr. old son and what works for her is that he wants a "Big Buzz Light Year" toy. She keeps telling him that only big boys get those and big boys don't potty their pants. It's working and she's thrilled. Good luck (hugs).
Sara Noel 07-23-2002, 07:00 PM He's 32 months old. *thinking why am I still counting in months* LOL
2.5 almost 3

Jerseygirl 07-23-2002, 07:47 PM Have you tried the book and video for boys, something about a potty party.
milach 07-24-2002, 04:06 PM Sara, sounds like our ds' are the same age (Mine will be 3 Sept 30) and mine also has ZERO interest. I bought him a potty seat (that fits over the regular toilet seat)- it has ducks and glitter floating around in it. It's really cool- I got it at Wal Mart. But the novelty of it wore off within a week. Every once in a while, he wants to sit on the potty (gets his stepstool and seat out by himself and puts it all in place), but nothing ever happens. I try encouraging him by asking if he wants to sit on the potty like mommy- of course, he says no. I've tried just putting him on there and nothing happens with that either. His aunt bought him a potty book which he loves- but as far as him going on the potty, no way. It would be a dream to have him out of diapers before the baby is born, but it's looking really unlikely at this point. He just doesn't care- he could have poop up his back, and you'd never know it until you go up and smell it. It's so aggrevating!!! But I know you can't force it. So I don't know either, but I'm sure if we keep encouraging them, the time will come when they are ready.

PrairieRose 07-25-2002, 01:01 AM How funny Sara, my dd#1 was 30 months old when ds was born. Ds was 28 when dd#2 was born. I remember that in months too!
*snork*;)
Lori Biever-Launder 07-25-2002, 01:14 AM I potty trained BOTH my boys at the same time! Mo older son didn't want to--he bacame a "Klingon" every time I tried to put him on the potty! Yep, we had two potty chairs in the bathroom. At the time, both boys were only allowed Kool Aid once in a blue moon, so I made a gallon of the stuff and told them they could have ALL the KA they wanted except that they had to drink it on the potty. We spent the better part of a week just at home, most of it in the bathroom because they love KA sooo much. We got the idea across though and it was the start of the "dry season".:band: :hurray:
Mumbose 07-25-2002, 01:59 AM I have to give all the credit to my DH - he potty trained the boys. The oldest was the hardest but my Dh would take him to the potty every time that Dh would have to go. Ok I know this sounds weird but they would "make bubbles in the potty"(with Pee). Both my boys were taught standing up-- on a little stool.
Then the oldest potty trained the little one. So I had it pretty easy.

dz_blonde_girl 07-25-2002, 08:56 AM Oh, Sara, I don't know what to say. Just don't be upset with yourself or let anyone else upset you if he doesn't want to potty for another year or longer. Boys seem so preoccupied at any age. Try to figure out what times of the day he goes, then get him on the pot before it happens. Maybe if you can keep him clean and dry for a few days he'll decide he likes that better.
CAGmomof2 07-25-2002, 12:51 PM I am having a similar problem in the fact that DD who is 26 months old does not want to be Potty Trained either!! She will sometimes Potty but not all the time!!
I am trying my best to wait till she shows more interest so that way I will not force her to be potty trained and she will not relapse on my DH and I!!
mommyto5 08-01-2002, 10:06 AM This will be very hard for some people to believe but it is really true. My first child I tried everything to get her potty trained when I thought she was ready. It was a big struggle. I started to do the same with my 2nd child who is a boy and we fought and then finally I said ok wear a diaper until you are ready. We would always mention how great wearing underwear was and all that but finally one day he said ok I am going to wear underwear. It was about a month before he turned 3 and had about 2 accidents and that was it. I have a 2 year old girl now that will turn 3 in September and I have taken the same approach with her and she decided this week that she will no longer diapers and wear panties during the day and a pull up at night. Her grandparents kept asking is she potty trained yet and pushing her and I kept saying she will do it when she wants. We read books about it but I never pushed her. I asked her every morning if she wanted to wear underwear and she got to choose. It has worked like a charm for my last 2 kids and I wll do the same when my 4 th is at potty training time. It is true that they will let you know when they are ready with a little encouragement. Amy
homesteadmamma 08-01-2002, 11:21 AM I'm a firm believer in not pushing a child to be potty trained. When there ready they will be trained quickly.
They learn by example so he needs to see that using the potty isn't harmful. He can have a small potty chair that is his for using when dh is busy in the bathroom. He doesn't even need to sit on it, just to be with dad. Remember also, boys are much harder to train than girls for some reason.
It basically comes down to a control issue and the more you get anxious and upset, the more control he has in the situation. Relax and don't push the issue - he'll get trained.
