View Full Version : For those that hang laundry ?
Sara Noel 07-23-2002, 06:14 PM Do you have an outdoor and indoor line?
Retractable clothesline? Portable Clothes rack?
I may be interested in an old clothes drying rack, do they still make these?
Sara
Michelle 07-23-2002, 06:28 PM I have a retractable clothes line in my basement and also a folding one that I used to use for sweaters and things that could not be thrown in the dryer.

MANDERS 07-23-2002, 06:39 PM Outside dh hung up a clothes line( a rope lol)but during the summer it is too humid to hang outside, they don't dry.I hang ours inside on our clothes rack(.50 from a yard sale)just turn the fan on and away they dry.i also hang stuff from door jams and over the crib rails when ds is up.
Jerseygirl 07-23-2002, 08:20 PM I have lines in the basement, then the T shaped things that hold up three lines in the yard. I am too uncoordinated and those nice little sweater drying racks always end up on the floor.
justjenn 07-23-2002, 08:23 PM My clothes line is outside, but I am planning on putting one in the garage for winter, and rainy days.
AmyBoz 07-23-2002, 09:04 PM We have a retractable line in the basement and then a wooden shoe rack that I use as a drying rack in the basement as well.
seadream 07-23-2002, 09:51 PM I only have an outside line
CAGmomof2 07-24-2002, 02:05 PM I don't have either in our home but I do hang dry most of our laundry around our home on polls that are in our Laundry room our bathrooms !! :)
bamamomto4 07-24-2002, 02:15 PM I have an outside line,a retractable on the carport (used mostly for beach towels and wet bathing suits) and a folding one I got at wal-mart (cost about $7) :)
Megareader 07-24-2002, 03:41 PM Outside I have the T-bar shaped kind with 5 lines, downstairs in the laundry room I have a retractable one.
sixfreds 07-24-2002, 03:47 PM Okay where do you get a Retractable clothesline and how much about is it??
My dryer is broken so I am hanging clothes out and that seems like the perfect solution for now..
Eileen
I have an outdoor clothesline that I use as much as I can from early spring until the snow starts to come down. In the winter I hang clothes up on a line in the basement as we have a pellet stove down there, and it dries the clothes quickly.

milach 07-24-2002, 04:55 PM I have a 100' rope strung between several trees for the summer time. In winter, I use drying racks in the basement, but I do use the dryer for jeans, sweatshirts and sheets- since they do not fit on the racks.

Jerseygirl 07-24-2002, 10:38 PM Home Depot carries the retractable lines. Don't remember the price, but they did carry them this spring.
Karla 07-25-2002, 03:41 AM I have an outside line and a drying rack that I use inside and out, durning the winter I used the drying rack in the living room where the pellet stove could blow on it and the clothes if put out in the evening would be dry by morning which also added some moisture to the house for my plants...Karla

They vary in cost. I'll post one at Target priced at $9.99, but it's plastic. I have seen some online going for upwards of $40.00 which I think is way overpriced.

Michelle 07-30-2002, 05:44 PM Eileen, I got mine at Home Depot for $12.99 I think.
BTW, have you been getting my emails? :) Haven't heard from you for a while.

Mom23boys 08-03-2002, 01:20 PM I have an outside clothesline that me and DH made ourselves. We decided we could make it cheaper than buying one of those T-post kits. I think ours will last longer too.
wife228 08-03-2002, 06:38 PM During the summer I shut the dryer down. I mean turn off the power to it so I can't use it. I hang outside or on the back porckh. Makes a big difference in the electric bill each month.
dolphin 08-07-2002, 02:28 AM OK, I use the dryer every week, sometimes every day! Such a hard habit to break and so easy to use.
That is a good idea to acutually unplug it. Didn't think of that.
I have two little clothes rack in the garage that I use only for clothes that I don't want to dry in the dryer completely.
I use the door ways in the winter sometimes. Put clothes on hangers and hang on any door way. lol
I do have one of those nice T-thingys some of you mentioned but it is in the back of the shed. Not doing much good there huh?
K, time to be frugal and get that thing out and use it!
Thanks for the push. I needed it!
homesteadmamma 08-07-2002, 12:53 PM I don't own a dryer so I hang clothes on a clothesline outside during the spring/summer/fall months.
In the winter I hang my clothes on clothes racks. We inherited a very old one when we purchased our home and I purchased another one at Walmart.
bmiltimore 08-07-2002, 01:17 PM I use my dryer every week! DH built me two rods in the laundry room to hang clothes on (with hangers) but
now that I have the freezer in there, I’ve lost some of my hanging room.
I used to hang clothes to dry and then “fluff” them in the dryer so they weren’t all hard and stiff. Since I do all
the laundry in one day, I run out of room for hanging them up.
I’d LOVE to put a clothesline out on out back patio but our association would have a fit if they saw that. I
think that is silly! Who cares what I do with my own porch?
Someday I hope to have a yard of my own that I can put up a clothesline in to dry my clothes in the sun. I love
them smell of towels that had been flapping in the wind! :)
doodlebug 08-08-2002, 12:05 AM We have an outside line, t-posts and 3 lines, and I have a drying rack. I also hang hand washables on hangers on the shower curtain rod, also hang things on the shower rod that will fade real bad if I hang them outside in the sun.
Our Wal-Mart sells the wooden drying racks for $9.96. They also have another chrome drying rack (which I had never seen before). They are the same style as the wooden ones, but they had to be put together and once put together they could be folded up to be stored just like the wooden ones. They were $12.99.

bmiltimore 08-10-2002, 10:03 PM Okay, it was such a hot, sunny day that I decided to hang dry stuff despite the complex rules! LOL
I took an old LONG telephone cord and tied it from one side of my back porch to the other. The line runs low from the ground so it is level with the back fence--so the golfers can't see much! :)
I line dried lots of stuff! I am amazed at how quickly things dry! I have been able to put up 3 batches of stuff!
I only ran the dryer once today for socks/underwear/wash cloths
I am going to keep doing this until someone tells me to stop! :)
I was at K-Mart today, and they have the wooden drying racks on sale for $6.99 this week.

cotintop 08-11-2002, 08:57 PM My husband has built a place to hang clothes in the garage for me over the washer and dryer using pvc piping and wooden brackets to hold them. It's very sturdy and cheap to build. I hang bras etc. to air dry and also use it to hang stuff coming out of the dryer so they don't wrinkle up again.
