Hi Pam,

I usually buy one small container of yogurt with live cutlure in it. If you can't find one at the grocery, you will for sure at the health food store. Thsi is much cheaper than buying 'yogurt starter".

I put about 2 tbls into a litre of warmed (not hot) powdered milk and 1/2 a packet of plain gelatin(melted in a bit of hot water and then cooled) and mix it all up. I add the gelatin because I like my yogurt firm.

then I leave it above the stove or in a warm place overnight. refrigerate.

Afterwards add whatever flavouring you like, jams, jellies, syrups, fruit, you name it.

I freeze the rest of the 'starter' yogurt for when I need it, but using the yogurt I just made, I can make a new one (you can do this about 3 times before it 'wears out')

good luck. it's delicious and healthy.

Here's a thread for you: http://www.frugalvillage.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=66368&highlight=how+to+make+yogurt

It's under "Cooking from Scratch" and I bumped it up. :)

Babs, thanks for the gelatin tip. I've been making hm yogurt and been unhappy with how runny it is. This is so simple to fix! Thanks again!

Edited to add: and thanks Val for bumping that yogurt recipe on the other board. I've printed it out to try. Mine uses powdered milk, which is more expensive than liquid milk here. So a recipe using all liquid milk is a good idea.
