View Full Version : Meat grinder ???
suzysaver 04-15-2006, 11:29 AM My hubby wants a sausage maker for his birthday, they can be a little pricey.
I'm trying to convince myself I could use it for making hamburger or something else...Does anyone use one??? Is this an item that will be used? I was also thinking maybe just get him the press type that doesn't grind and he could play around with hamburger or ground turkey. My hubby is notorious for starting a project or enjoying a gift once and then there is sits.
Not sure what to do and his b-day is on the 26th, if he doesn't get something for sausage he will be disapointed. I see one on ebay ..that will cost 49.00 + around 20.00 for shipping. There are cheaper ones, but they look really cheap. Anyone have any suggestions?
frugalfarmwife 04-15-2006, 11:44 AM You know what, maybe look for an old one, I have my grandmothers and honestly have thought about putting it to work here. Mine is one that clamps on a table and hand cranks, it has different blade parts for different jobs, I know she even used it to make baby food for my dad and aunt (75-80 years ago).
Just a thought, and it could actually be a fun family thing :) grind cheap roasts, make sausage, that kind of thing.

Darlene 04-15-2006, 12:00 PM Do you have a kitchen-aid mixer? They make a sausage stuffing attachement for it.
suzysaver 04-15-2006, 12:17 PM No, I wish I did. Well I see the hand ginder kind and those are fairly cheap, I also spotted an electric that looks really great....Is a kubbe attachment the sausage funnel part??? I asked the seller, but they haven't got back to me yet. It's new and total with shipping is around $55.00 looks like a good deal. I'm a little leary of used....considering it's used for grinding meats, and some people don't now the meaning of clean.
homesteadmamma 04-15-2006, 12:42 PM We don't have a sausage grinder, however we do have an electric meat grinder that can be used to make sausage with. I use mine all the time, especially when we have deer meat. I make deer burger with it and it works great.
suzysaver 04-15-2006, 03:48 PM Thanks for the help ladies, I bought him a new hand crank kind. I would have liked the electric, but I don't want to spend that much...and worry about burning up the motor....the ones that are more reasonable priced seem to be kind of weak. Hubby is not one for patience and if something doesn't fit..he thinks you force it ! I tend not to buy plastic and when it comes to putting something together, I do it......So I think this will be the way to go. I spent 19.99 + 14.00 shipping.
ewokgirl 04-15-2006, 05:41 PM Unless he is already skilled at making sausage, I suggest you also give him some sort of recipe book to go with the grinder. We lived in Europe when I was in high school, and my dad was unhappy with the sausage there. He figured he'd just make his own. He'd grind the stuff up and just make up a recipe in his head. It never turned out well. Not once. He probably would have been okay if he'd had a recipe to follow. Just a suggestion borne of experience.
frugalnana 04-16-2006, 10:34 AM I don't have one, but my father bought one years ago, thinking he would make his own, that lasted for about 3 months, along with the bread maker and meat a slicer he bought. I am getting the meat slicer, because we buy in bulk and then I freeze the bologna, ham, etc for sandwiches and I hand slice it all right now.
Good luck I hope he enjoys it and I agree get a recipe book to go with it.

suzysaver 04-16-2006, 02:30 PM Thanks for the suggestions, he has a huge BBQ and smoking Book with all kinds of recipes in it...including sausage.(last years christmas gift). I also found a sausage spice kit on ebay with casings in it too for $8.00. This BBQ and smoker thing is his hobby. For Easter I bought his Two bags of wood chips, a bootle of liquid smoke, some seasoning, a stick lighter, and an injector.....(he loved it, and we are going to be smoking meats today). Thanks again ladies and Happy Easter !
