View Full Version : Are Wal-Mart's Prices going up or is it just me?

Okay, maybe I'm senile, but everytime I leave Wal-Mart, I have spent at least $50. When I go to one of the local groceries, I only spend around $20 or less.

Is it because I'm buying junk that Wal-mart sets around to make me think I need it? Probably.:doh2:

Do you have the same problems? How do you overcome them? Is it cheaper to you to just shop at another grocery store rather than being tempted with "stuff" that Wal-mart employees have strategically placed on the aisles to make you spend your money?

I feel the same way. It seems I can't get out of wal-mart with out spending over fifty dollars too! Strange how that happens. Where I live there aren't too many choices for groceries other than food lion and I think they're prices are way too expensive!

Way too many temptations, I never shop at WalMart and keep a well stocked pantry from loss leaders. I shop at one store 98% of the time which is the priciest in our town but the best products but do run into each of the two others maybe 1% of the time each if they have a loss leader I just have to stock up on.

The key is to NEVER enter WalMart without a list and some determination! I go for a very specific list of things that I need. If I am in the market for end of season clothes for next year or similar items, I put that on the list. I may go looking at other things, but I do NOT put them in the cart. If I really think I need it, I add it to my list at the bottom and then go home. I put the new items on the list on the side of the fridge. If I really DO need it, I will put it on the actual list when I go back to WalMart. It helps me to curb so much of the impulse spending!

Prices are definitely going up. I have been buying trash bags and disposable razors there at the same price for years, and in the past couple of months they have each gone up about 50 cents each. The diapers that my son usually wears have gone up about a buck recently. But..yesterday I bought the walmart brand of spaghetti sauce and the price actually went down from 1.00 to .94.

As the price goes up the quality of their products have been going down..I used to buy the walmart cheapiy trashbags with the pull string close, had bought them for years and never had a problem with them tearing. Since the price has gone up the pull strings had been tearing off whenever I closed the bag. I didn't stuff them anymore than usual so. It's another reason for me to try to stay out of walmart. Also I have had a problem with the zippers on the zipplock bags being misaligned so that you can't zip them shut. I have had to take them back because they are unusable.

Do you all think it's because of the new "high end" walmart they're building around the country?

Have you heard about it? Dh told me about it the other night.

halloweenfreak
05-01-2006, 04:33 PM
i have heard about that. they're suppose to be stocking better made clothing and such. but i have noticed that i spend more money in there too as compared to the grocery store down the street from them. the grocery store is a little more expensive on some things, but they also double their coupons, but id rather go in there then to fight walmart and their "everyday low prices"

The other day when I was in wal-mart I looked around at all of the signs that say "LOW PRICE" "EVERYDAY LOW PRICE" and etc. And thought "Could this just be a ploy to make you think they have low prices because you see the sign so many times that you start to believe it?"

:( Yes, they are going up. I go to the WM near me...and the closest Aldi's is in Greenville, NC about a 45 minute drive away. I love Aldi's...but can not justify the gas to go there every 2 weeks....so I make the list and try my best to stick with it. ;)

Yes, I think the prices are going up.....and I don't think it's because the employees are getting more money.....

I have been trying to use TARGET more often, prices are about the same on the basics, and their employees seem a lot more happy.

All of the stores will use the increase in Gasoline to up the prices on everything......

I always bought McCains juice pks for the kids(10) in 1 pkg for 2.69 in now its up to 2.99. I go to Shoppers drug Mart, they have sales on theeir lifr brand for 2pgs for $5.00. And they taste great, low on sugar, 100% juice.

I'm glad it's not just me. I thought for sure I was getting some "Wal-mart's out to get me/drive me crazy/send me into early retirement" paranoia.

Thanks ladies!

Wish we could start a "Ban Wal-mart Coalition"

I usually go there for certain items. Its only about a mile from my house but so is Sav-A-Lot. On Friday we get the ads and I look through them for sales and what my list has on it. I pretty much know what the prices are at Walmart. I say the prices have gone up on alot of their items. They are still the cheapest for Cream of Wheat. Krogers sells it for $4.57 a box and Walmart has it for $3.27 and my dh will not eat the store brand. So you aren't loosing your mind.

I think one of the major reasons people spend so much money when they go into Wal-Mart is that they don't comparison shop. A price book and a knowledge of what the other stores charge can save you a lot of money in the long run. And like shelsmiles said, you should never enter a Wal-Mart or other chain store without a shopping list and some determination.

thank god the Walmart is at the other end of town. Since it is so far away, they better be having a really good deal on something before I go.

I'm fortuneate. I have a run-down Zellers in my neighborhood, but they have that much stuff on clearance at any time, it's fantastic! :D I bought a beautiful solid black queen sized comforter for my double bed for $20. You ladies have NO IDEA how long I have shopped for a solid black comforter. And to find one for $20, well, I was just soaring to the moon, I was so happy! :D

No your not losing your mind. There's a book out about Walmart and the way they work. Can't think of the name of it to save my life at the moment. But the book goes into great deal from how Walmart moves into a town and all the dirty little things it does not only to town councils, but to vendors and competitors. One of the final things Wally does is after he has killed off the little guys in a town they raise their prices. Since alot of the smaller mom and pop places or small retailers have died while Wally World took deep price cuts now they can make the money back by raising prices. Also look at a Walmart shopping cart compared to your old store. The Walmart cart is much larger so you buy more not realizing how full your cart has gotten. The book also spoke about that. When I dig up my copy I'll post the tilte and happily mail it off to anyone who'd like to read it.

Laurie, I would love to read that book!! The next town over is the nearest Wal-Mart to us and it isn't even a supercenter, just a regular ol' wally world. That even managed to shut down the local grocery store Elmore's. They had such wonderful sales and while they were higher on certain things, it was a very good store to do your grocery shopping. Now if you want to get groceries you have to drive 35 miles to do so as the wally world here only has milk, lunchmeats, cheese and the likes! It is really so sad!!!

I've heard rumors that WM here has paid off some of the local heads of gov't not to put in a Target or other department store. K-Mart got shut down, Food Lion is even gone. Winn-Dixie sold out to E.W. James. It's ridiculous.

I've also discovered that the WM about 15 miles south of here in another smaller town is cheaper than this one. It even has a better selection on stuff. So what you said Laurie sounds accurate.

Ive noticed the variety in pricing for each location of Walmart. No two Walmarts have the same pricing. Its always the one smack dabbed in the middle of the bush that has the most current stock, always restocked quickly and lowest prices. Just to draw everyone in and "hook" them.

Basically I get what I need and get out. Sometimes to kill time, I 'window' shop - ha, ha. LOL

They do still have lower priced toiletry items and household goods compared to other local chains/stores.

You ladies are right about the different prices. The Walmart on the North end of our town is much higher than my end of town. It has all the well to do people. Plus all the big shops and mall are on the north end.
Believe or not our insurance company for prescriptions is contracted through the pharmacy, it is the only one we are allowed to have the prescriptions filled. I go to Sav-A-Lot or Pick-n-Save for our main groceries but there are some good food deals at Walmart on Saturday mornings. But I do agree you have to have your price book and know what is a deal.

I have also heard that Walmart has low prices until the mom and pop stores go and then they jack their prices up. I used to love Walmart, until I started really comparing prices. I was spending between 75 cents to a $1 for a dozen eggs when I can get them on sale elsewhere for 30-50 cents a dozen. Milk was the same way. $2.24 for a gallon at Walmart when I can get it on sale for $1.89 a gallon on sale. I've been very careful to watch prices and have started a price book. Walmart does have some really good deals sometimes but you have to be careful.

I have mentioned this before, but I switched from buying all my groceries at Wal-Mart to Sav-a-Lot and lowered my food bill by at least a third. I buy at Wal-Mart only what I can't find at Sav-a-Lot. I agree with the OP, everything seemed to keep going up in price.

I don't know if the local Walmart prices are rising, but I do know they've always been more expensive than other local stores in the food department.

They also just slightly undercut another local store - Zeller's. But Zeller's etc. was bought out by an American, so I don't worry which one I shop at now. They're all equally bad for us Canadians in the long run. Most all our stores are owned by Americans now.

In the end I comparison shop a lot more than I used to and take advantage of sales.

I know here that walmart is lower in most of its prices when the store here has loss leaders they are still cheaper at walmart, but I have noticed that the prices are going up, I have really started watching prices I really need to get my price book done, but everytime I think I have it done i notice prices have changed again. I go to a town about 90 minutes away from me and have even started shopping there to get better deals. last time I paid for my gas up there with my savings, so I really have to get that price book done. I wish we had a sava alot of something like that here but no luck we did just got a price mart but they don't post ads so you have to go in there to find out what is on sale, which i do sometimes but when time is tight i don't it is frustrating sometimes just going to have to really watch the prices and buy carefully.

Yesterday I HAD to go to walmart for a few things and bought: a package of newborn diapers, size 1 diapers, ultra charmin, and huggies wipes. Each of these items cost $6.97.

Is it the new mark of the beast? JK!!! To me, the price is cheap for diapers since they are not name brand, but doesn't it just seem expensive? I mean $7.00 is not cheap.

I saw a 6 pack of 24 oz. Mountain Dew for $2.97. Above it was a sign that said "Was $3". Big woopity snot! A whopping .03 difference is REALLY going to make me jump on that one!

I got a little aggravated. But I'm at that point in my pregnancy too where I'm ready to have this baby and feel like it's the pregnancy that never ends. So I'll try not to be too grumpy.

I stopped shopping WalMart several months ago. Boycott is a strong word, but I guess that's what I'm doing. They have brought in their take-no-prisoners lawyers and they're building 4 new stores in our area. We already have a Wal-Mart and Sam's Club. Believe me when I tell you our popoulation base won't support that...unless they run the stores already here out of business.

Local people tried to fight it and their lawyers immediately threatened our mayor and city council with legal action. They're well-dressed thugs in my estimation. I will not spend a penny in any of their stores.

Ironically, I'm spending less after switching to Target for my monthly stock-up.

I've noticed Walmart's prices going up slightly, but so have the other grocery stores. I have a sheet of paper with prices of items (price book) so I know how much I'm paying. I dont' seem to get distracted at Walmart, well, not always anyways. The loss leaders around here usually come out to Walmarts every day prices, sometimes it's still cheaper at WAlmart for the exact same items. Just gotta know our prices.

the prices at our walmart have definately risen!!...I used to get a generic stain remover there for 87 cents, they stopped selling it and only carry brand names...dog food went up about 2 dollars, but it is still cheaper than the grocery store....I try and go only once a month and I am very careful to get only what I need and get out of there!!!..I still average around 85 dollars...

I went to Walmart lastnight to do our 2wk shop and I noticed prices were increased. However as long as they stay affordable and fit into our budget I will continue to go. I know it sounds shallow but I can't afford to explore new brands of food and drop all the brands I'm use to. I have an illness that can't have certain amounts of sugar and salt and onion..ect..so I know the labels when I see them at Walmart. I'd just have to start all over again..and I will if Walmart becomes too expensive for us.

I can't recall the last time I shopped in Walmart. Aldi's and the day-old bread store have always been my first choice and I'd rather not ever shop Walmart for anything ever again.

That said, I've noticed price increases everywhere! Even the plumber charged me a whopping $30 more than usual saying it was for gas prices and he's located in the same small town as I am! It's getting ridiculous! If it had not been the weekend and I could have found another plumber in a hurry I would have not used the local plumber.

Your not losing your mind. It is going up. I know that all the dairy and walmart brands as well has gone up and bread, but i make mine, i noticed it anyway. There paper goods and meat. Health and beauty aids and it is what ever the consumers needs are going up. The price of sugar, flour went up again. Not just 10 or 15 cents but 50 cents and up. Eggs are so high. I almost cry. I want in the country again. Meat is very high. I bought two days ago some that was marked down and so full of fat by the time i cooked the small amount i half anyway it was nothing. Vegtables are very high to and this is the season that they should go down. Not the case this time. So discouraged.

I have noticed it also. It just isn't walmart either. Where we live it is cheaper for me to drive the 30 mins away to a Super walmart and shop then to go to the local grocrey store in this town. Example would be milk, at our local grocrey store it is $3.69 a gallon. Walmart (little bitty one) is $2.97 a gallon.

our walmart likes to raise prices so that in a few weeks they can lower them again. not everything will come back down but enough of it does to make me think that is what they are doing. they raise the price just so they can lower it later since they are always lowering prices

My husband and I always do our Costco and Walmart shopping trip together. This way we really try to stick to the list. It is crazy how things just creep in. We are really good at sticking to what we actually need, but still end up with things that weren't on the list. It's frustrating. Right now we are $50 over in our food budget and I need to plan a dinner for tomorrow night. I better start looking in my cupboards to see what I already have on hand!

As for their prices, they are still cheaper for me than anywhere else, so I will continue to shop there.

I won't go to Wal-Mart or Sam's for MANY different reasons..........but one of them is definately how they "get" you with having everything all in one place! It's almost impossible to stick to the list!

With my coupon and sales shopping at our WAY more expensive grocery stores, I save TONS of money! The items themselves are cheaper AND I stick to my list much easier! I certainly can't find (unneeded) clothes for the family or other "bargains" that end up wrecking the budget!

It sounds like there are some definite "issues" with Walmart...but for us (up here where there's not a lot of selection...no dollar stores, 2 grocery chains that are smaller, no big-lots, etc.) Walmart is a blessing. We can afford the things we need. I haven't noticed any big price hikes (yet)...a couple things even went down in price...and there's definitely a long distance to truck things up here, so I'm expecting price hikes (gas related). Ours is just a regular "Wally-world" - no SuperCenter. So, we use the local grocery stores and Costco for food for the most part.

I agree, it IS hard to stick to a list at Walmart!! We did our errands Saturday morning and (blush) we got a bag of chips and a package of cookies that were NOT on the list. We got all the other things that we DID need (on the list!) at a MUCH cheaper price than we could have at the other stores we have to chose from. So, even with the 2 "oops" purchases...we're still WAY ahead of where we would be without a Walmart.

WalMart's prices are increasing, but so are the other stores prices. I do not have a Sav-A-Lot, Aldi's, Crash and dent can store, Super Target nor Angel Food Ministeries to choose from where I live, so Super WalMart is the cheapest store in my area.

I use Dave Ramsey's cash envelope system, so I am never tempted to buy anything than is on my list as far as wandering into other parts of the store. I will buy some food items if they are on clearance and I need them and if I will not go over my cash allowance for the week.

I know most of the prices and estimate the cost of my grocery list before even heading to WalMart, so I have never spent more dollars than I have with me for groceries. I have come within $2.00 of what I have available for groceries, but never over.

It takes discipline and paying cash for me.

I'm usually pretty good about resisting impulse buys in Walmart. There is one grocery store I use and often go in Walgreens, but I mostly shop at Walmart. I can price match, and, unlike some others, to me the best thing about it is to have everything there. It is only about a mile from my apartment, is one of the unusual ones that is rarely crowded, so I can get in and out pretty quickly. I don't have to drive around, and most of all I save enough time that if I do cave in a pick up something I didn't plan, I figure I still come out ahead, since I seem to have even less time than money!

Lauren

Add me to the list of those who can't seem to get out of Walmart for less than $50.00 - $100.00.

I totally agree that I'm much better about things when I have my list with me.

And, as for the prices going up ... I think that they have here at my store anyways.

Not sure if it is just from rising prices everywhere or if it's 'cuz they have such a monopoly on things that they pretty much can raise their prices 'cuz they know people are going to shop there regardless.

Laurie in Bradentonthis is true, I read this somewhere online.

this is one reason why I give business to other stores around our area instead of just ad matching even if I can. So far, all stores here are doing brisk business except for some mom and pop store(s) which were forced to close shop since they cannot compete with Walmart's always low price.

overall, the prices of most grocery items have risen. the sale prices they advertise in the weekly sales ads use to be the regular shelf price just a few weeks ago  this is true not only for WM but other competing grocery stores as well. the price of gas has a lot to do with the price of everything whether we like it or not. if only pay increase was proportional, it will not be much of a problem.

I work in the Cash office p/t for wally world and their prices are going up- just as everywhere else is also.

The nearest walmart is out of my way. I only stop in there if I am in the area, which is only every couple of weeks. I have noticed that prices on certain items have been going up. I find I can do better on items at the local grocery store on sale and loss leaders.
I dont purchase clothing, towels, sheets, there. I have them shrink up and fade after a couple of washes and had to replace them. I would rather spend a little more for quality and keep them longer

Prices are going up across the board. Even at Sav-a-lot. Their basic canned goods used to be 3/$1 and now they're at least .39, maybe more.

I was noticing yesterday at work that our store brand basic canned veggies have gone up from 2/.88 to .69 apiece. To me, that's just a little too much of a jump. I think people are getting gouged on some things, because the stores know they can get away with it.

At my wal-mart the price of flour went up about .30 cents.
I thought this was so thoughtful of them to do this right before the holiday baking starts. Thing is if I hadn't set up a price book/card I would have never realized it. Fortunately I already found a place that sells for 1.09 5# bag, but I was just shocked, as I have been a pretty loyal wal mart shopper for years, before I started my price book.

Well HELLO, who in their right mind is going to pay that. I went to my little hometown grocery today and got the same brand and same size for 3.79.I dont shop walmart, they say they are cheaper but i dont see it. That is part of the Walmart way. Lure everyone in with low prices then they slowly raise prices knowing most people won't notice what is happening.

But then we also have high gas prices across the nation where and Walmart ships their stuff with semis and diesel is more costly. Either way they will find a way to get the profits.

Yep, they are definetly going up! I was in there yesterday and noticed that just about everything that I usually get went up by approx 50 cents. I'm already getting milk from a local farmer for $1.55 a half gallon and eggs for $1 so that's not so bad. Can't wait for the nice weather to come back in so I can start planting veggies again but until then I'll be going the farmers markets and Amish/Mennonite Farm stands around me. I'm glad I have them not too far away since the price of produce and fruit has definetly skyrocketed as well in Wal-Mart. Gee, everything is going up these days, everything of course BUT my salary :(

I have a Walmart across the street from where I live but I don't believe in Walmart's politics so I don't shop there. I feel they are too greedy and push the smaller local competiters out without so much as a thought of what their practices do to the local economy.

It seems to be the "politically correct" thing to do in the US-to hate Walmart-I think it's silly. If you don't want to shop there-then don't but Walmart brings jobs to the community and those of us who are, shall we say, "financially challenged"-find better deals there than we did at your typical small town stores-so we vote with our feet.

I'll go to Walfart if something is cheaper than I can get it at the grocery after double coupons. Otherwise, I only go for fish food, puppy pads and this special pet stain and odor remover you can only get there. Otherwise, I don't go there. Not because of "politics" and the like, but because it's just too darn crowded and takes forever and a day....I also get lured in by all the crap on the shelves lol I'm almost guaranteed to spend a bunch of money in there when I only went in for a couple of things.

In general all prices are going up in all stores, because of the gas price *rme*. Yeah Gas price goes down where are the other prices coming down but they don't they stay where they are.

Well actually walmarts prices depend on where you live and what they are trying to do. If they have just reciently come into a town they will lower their prices to under cut their compeditor and put them out of business. Now if they have already succeeded in doing so their prices will creap back up to higher then what the compeditors were to begin with.

Luckily i live in a town where walmart will never get rid of the foodlion since this is their head quarters and #1 store is located *lol* So walmart has stopped trying and has kept their prices low. I have actually found better prices at this walmart then at aldies at times, but yah got to watch carefully cause they try to trick yah i swear they do.

My Dad has a Walmart SuperStore within 5 minutes of his house. He told me that food prices were going up. I did not believe him until I started comparing prices WOW he was right. I especially noticed that staples were increasing in price (bread, milk, fruit/vegetables). I also take a list and I am very careful to stick to the list. Back in my spendrift days I could never get out of WalMart without spending at least $100 now I am in and out in less than $30. I try not to go more than twice a month although it is only 15minutes from my house. :cowwave:

I have learned my lesson about Walmart.
When they first opened up in our area we
would go and I would buy more than I
intended or wanted because the prices looked
so good.

No when I go, I go with a list to get the
exact things I want and no wandering
around. DH does not even go into the
movie section anymore and we save a
lot more money.

I am at Wal-Mart nearly every day...........lol..........I work there. Try saving money doing that! I'm there when the good deals happen. I see when the clearances are taking place. It would be soooooo easy to shop daily, but I have had to be very disiplined. I pick ONE day a week to grocery shop, and only with a list. The way I figure it, when I shop at WM, I am helping myself. I am helping with the bottom line, which helps when it comes to getting a bonus or not getting a bonus. I'd rather get the bonus. So, even tho I don't like a lot of things about Wal-Mart, it's how I make my living, and am going to support them in order to support myself.

(haven't figured out how to use the smileys and things yet or you would see that I am smiling..............lol

I have been shopping at wal-mart for several years. There is only 2 of us, plus 2 dogs 2 cats and a parrot, and every year it gets to be $20.00 more on the grocery bill each week. I can not get by with just soup and sandwiches for supper, and the extra cooking of course takes money, and i'm not buying steaks. It seems like it is getting to be just hambuger and chicken, and then for a change of pace it is chicken and hambuger.

Sorry pushed wrong key. Anyway to add to what I was saying is:
I haven't been buying cucumbers, because they were 30 to 40 some cents a piece. When I went to wal-mart 2 days ago they had a price of 72 cents a piece. So I guess that answered your question.

I was at Walmart today and the guy was putting new tags on all the coffee and creamers. My creamer went up 40 cents and my coffee did too! He said all the coffee was going up.

Prices are higher on some things still. I am starting to use my pricebook TWG, so that I can be sure I am getting a good deal.

They stil have the best deal on Del Monte Tomatoes (I cook a lot, and they have the best taste for the price).

I will be thinking long and hard about going back to walmart.
I went by th eprices they had on the
iles the other day and in the sales rows.
Coffee was $6.88 so i picked up one for myself and 1 for my sister.
Got home they charged me $7.44.
I found 8 items that were $.50 cents more than what they had on their
shelves.
Of course we were in a hurry so never noticed until I went to add up the stuff for my sister.
It is the last straw for me...

I went to wal mart just the other day and thier frozen chicken went up as well as their oranges which I kinda understand because of the frost. But they were selling them for about .68 each. I went to a regular grocery store and they were selling the same oranges 4/.99 I couldn't believe the price difference. It's so hard now days to keep up with all the changing prices at all the different stores. I now buy the bulk of my food at Aldis.

i went once before xmas last year. visited the clearance isle, digging through I found some of those laminated 'cheat sheets' for kids in school... and all the class son is in or going to be in soon... i thought "great!"

i get to the checkout, of course the line where i check MYself out... and those things rang up at almost 5$ each!
I called the lady to help over and she said "i can't change it." I told her I foudn them on the clearance isle with a dollar sticker sign on the box they were in. "I can't help you." is all I got.

So I told her to take them off, since I didn't want them anymore.
She gave me such attitude and said "Why don't you just buy them. it's easier."

WHAT?! Are YOU paying me back for them??

So I got attitude for the wrong price, attitude for asking her to remove the items (so I could pay for my other things) & attitude because I said I wasn't taken them back to put them where I had gotten them.!

Sorry, at this point I was upset, so i said "Isn't that YOUR job?"

"Why dont you just go to management and tell them about the price problem?"

I responded: I plan on going to management, but not for those stupid over-priced things... I plan on telling them about YOUR attitude and lack of customer service... Shelly" (yep, I had her name!)

I got other ppl to laugh... wasn't exactly what I was going for with a trip to wallyworld... but I rarely shop there.

I go an extra few minutes to Meijer now. I've had some issues w/pricing there, but I've always been helped curteously and they've resolved any issue I've had.

I try my best to stay out of Walmart, but since it is the only place in town to buy certain item we go there sometimes. The last time was Sat night because we had to buy a space heater to thaw out our pipes (the hardware store is not open at 10:30 pm). We thought we were buying one for $19, but we were charged $40. We bought some other items and it was late, so we did not notice at the time. I am not sure if it rang up wrong or if it was in the wrong place on the shelf. It was way more than I wanted to spend. My DH may try to take it back.

I have always thought WalMart was increasing prices. One of the last Kmarts is only 1/8 mile away from me... I usually don't go to WalMart unless I need fabric, it's the one thing the Kmart here doesn't have. I haven't gone anti-WalMart, but now that they did away with the layaways, there is no reason for me to travel farther to get there.

I buy my groceries at the supermarket, on rare occassions (away on vacation) I have bought food at WalMart, but the prices were so much higher. I couldn't understand how people could afford to shop there weekly.

there are some valid points on this board i've read through.
and i think it was pointed out properly that - since his death - "Walmart" has really changed...

I'd forgotten about KMart! There's one a couple miles down the road - maybe i could start going there.

i never buy foods there tho - WAY too pricey for my budget.

but for "daily" goods... meijer or kmart are usually a better choice.

and someone else mentioned the "made in china" goods...

i think we - as americans - need to further put money back into OUR economy... fewer products containing lead too!

what happened to all those electronics that used to be American and then were sold overseas?
now it's our jobs, our children's toys...

here's to the small business... mom&pop owned stores...

I stopped shopping at Walmart for many of the same reasons that you have all listed. Prices were changing weekly.....not going down as is their "slogan" but up and up and up. Besides that, and this is just a personal issue for me, my Walmart has way too many unpleasant workers who not only don't want to be there, they make you miserable for being in the store!

I've been a Walmart shopper since about 1982. My main reason for doing so has been prices and selection, not so much on grocery items, but anything from garden tools to fabric, etc.

I have to mention, to whoever it was who said I could get "less expensive foods in your local grocery, farmer markets, bakeries and specialty shops," perhaps you can, but that simply is not true for me, and therefore, I must believe, for many people. I live in a rural county which does not contain a Walmart, or any specialty shop, for that matter. There are two local grocery stores, and I do shop the cleaner of the two for specials. I live almost an hour's drive from the nearest Walmart or K-Mart. I never shopped at K-Mart, because I would only have to leave there and go to Walmart to complete my list, in addition to the fact that K-Mart's prices are higher. I make a list and we travel to Walmart and/or Sam's about twice a month.

No, I don't like the fact that many small businesses have gone under. I'd shop at Aldi's, but the nearest one is a two-hour drive away, and the cost of gas doesn't jusitfy going.

I will say this, though. I have been having the experience of having to wait in line for an inordinately long time lately. The day after Christmas, which I consider to be the second busiest shopping day of the year, our Walmart had about 6 out of 24-28 check-outs manned! None of the self-check-outs were open! I have been shopping at Target more lately, even though they won't have everything on my list.

I never go to Walmart for customer service, that's for sure!
I feel like the checkout lady wants to throw something at me.
And they have the questionnaire on the screen (where you put your credit card through) " Did your cashier greet you today?"

Uh no.... Never.... And PS Its a super pain if they ring something up wrong, you have to go to customer service and the line is longer than the DMV, why wait for something is wrong with their system?

Kroger is good, if you catch a bad price you get for free! Really great when its my 8 buck contact solution!

Wal-mart doesn't do weekly sales like other supermarkets. They do change thier prices from time to time on different items. The key is to know what you pay for each item and which store has it cheaper. As for food prices going up....it is happening at all stores. In fact, in our town, Aldi's has raised thier prices the most, but there still have the cheapest produce.

I have noticed that they raise their prices for a couple of months then there is a sign saying roll back and the product is now back to the price it was 3 months ago. they raise prices to over a dollor more then some times only roll them back 50 cents, I watch my prices and sales and still sometiems walmarts price with a coupon not doubled is cheaper then going to the store that doubles coupons. trying to keep track of all the prices and getting a good deal on food and household items is a full time job, i would avoid walmart but it is the cheapest place in town it even beats aldis on most things. so I guess i will just have to shop at walmart if I want to save the most money.

Laurie in Bradenton

I can vouch for that. Its happened here in my town and now we are seeing the Wal-mart prices going up and up on all the grocery items.

Although walmarts prices are going up ... so are all the grocery stores in the area including aldies... so sometimes things at walmart ( expecially during big holidays ) are cheaper.

During christmas Flour and Sugar were WAY cheaper at walmart then they were at Aldies!! Now they are just a few cents diff, but walmart is a head for flour not for sugar last time i checked.

prices are going up because gas prices are up and most things are taken to the stores by trucks that use gas.

yes prices are going up all over... even at kroger where I have been buying the generic soda ( as a treat) for 59 cents for years......... now 69cents.

I'm going to be drinking more tea this year and only drinking soda once in awhile.... better for me anyway.

I live in VA and Walmart's prices are outrageous. I always bought a 2 lb. box of spaghetti there for 98 cents, last week it was 1.79.

The news said food prices were going up, but this is crazy, a 12 pk of soda was 1.99, now it's 2.50. Glad I drink tea!

I'm not a Walmart shopper but last night I was in the store killing time waiting for my daughter to finish her dance class. I noticed that the cheapest 5# bag of flour was $1.82. The Walmart store brand was actually more expensive at $1.85 than Gold Medal flour! I just bought the store brand flour at Price Chopper for the regular price of $1.39. (and PC is one of the most expensive stores around here)
It also seemed that most of Walmart's prices were in line (give or take a few things) with the grocery stores except the grocery stores offer better sales and loss leaders that really offset the price. Also, Walmart doesn't always offer some of the brands or product choices I like to purchase. I'll stick with my local grocery and the commissary for the bulk of my shopping as the very minimal savings (if any) at Walmart isn't worth putting up with long lines, a crowded store and questionable customer service.

Here we lost one store, it was first food 4 less then pricemart took over then they went out of buisness I loved that store they offered free stuff if you bought something else, like a pork roast then they gave you a 5lb bag of pototoes, gravy mix a can of veggies and a loaf of bread, it was worth buying the pork roast but now they are gone that leaves walmart, kmart(which is alot more expensive then walmart), target, sam's aldis and dillions (a kroger store) dillions has a sale each week You just have to be carefull because they offer 10 for $10 but some of those items are cheaper at walmart so i have to watch my sales and use a price book. this week dillions is offering peter pan peanut butter for 10 for $10 i have not seen peanut butter for a $1.00 in a long time so I am going to stock up I had some one steal alot of stuff from my pantry and frezzer so I have to rebuild my back up,:furious: luckly dillions is having some b1g1f sales this week, which will help I really need to start shopping at more then just walmart but with health issues sometimes it is just easier to get everything at one stop which is why the super walmart is nice, I wish we had some other stores I went to a larger town for a doctors appt the store that they had there that doubled $1.00 off coupons is no longer there so there went that savings also. it is so frustrating trying to save money and not having the places that you do save at close, I am going to start doing some checking and seeing where the products I buy all the time are the cheapest and maybe break down my shopping into two days just for the health reasons. But since walmart has the lower prices on alot of the items i buy i guess that is where I will have to shop unless i find them cheaper somewhere else.

I have noticed the huge price increases at walmart.

so much so, our local grocery, Kroger is MUCH cheaper. I CAN'T believe it!

Well, I no longer have to go out of my way to shop there. They are not less expensive ANY more. At least NOT Here!

I guess they have many trained to think they are the are the lowest cost and many customers won't even compare?

Very Strange.
