View Full Version : What were your favorite foods growing up?
Darlene 06-13-2006, 12:37 PM Do your kids love the same foods you did?
I don't remember much about the day to day food I ate but the things I do are the subs & pizzas I stayed up late(11pm laying in waiting to surprise them & beg for bites) on my dads payday because I knew he'd be coming home with one of those for my Mom & him.
Junk food was my fav.
My kids do have different tastes than I did growing up, they like more real food and are more adventurous & less picky than I was. Guess I raised them & fed them well, lol.
MirandaK 06-13-2006, 12:58 PM I remember when going to Dairy Queen was such a treat! One time my dad took me there when we were out on his motorcycle. I was on the back with my cone and we went over a bump and I smacked him in the back with a vanilla cone! Needless to say, that was the 1st and last time I ate ice cream on the motorcycle!.
We never really ate out when I was a kid except for asian food. My mom and dad love thai and chinese food so we would go out alot and I would always beg to get the poo poo platter which was a bunch of appetizer type foods, egg rolls and paper wrapped chicken, and it had a thing in the center with sterno in it so you could cook your own strips of beef. I loved that! I would beg and plead to get it.
Katybird 06-13-2006, 01:28 PM My favorites were my Mom's chicken fried steak with gravy and mashed potatoes and homemade chocolate pudding for dessert. My mouth is watering just thinking about it. :)
Mom23boys 06-13-2006, 01:37 PM Just about anything my grandmother cooked!! I loved her chicken 'n dumplins, stew, malts, and I think my favorite was her homemade biscuits and gravy!
My kids like junk food.
EmilyD 06-13-2006, 03:30 PM Fried chicken, mashed potatoes, cream gravy (usually for Sunday only)
Hot bread, my dad would tear out the center, butter the outside for him and the inside for me ... one of the few good memories I have of him
My mother's fried potatoes, onions and green peppers
Beans and ham with cornbread
I also remember the Dairy Queen ice cream dish (I don't like cones) that we got once in a blue moon, and the root beer from A&W.
My children love all of them as well.
AmyMCGS 06-13-2006, 06:21 PM My favorites:
--my mom's homemade spaghetti sauce (and to this day I still haven't found a jarred brand I like as well)
--mom's "fried" chicken (coated in corn flakes and baked)
--a root beer float from the local stand
--a chocolate dipped cone from the town's Arrow Queen
--cheetos
--I loved most junk foods-- Mountain Dew, chips, etc.
My daughter has so far developed much better eating habits than both DH and I.... not too many 3 year-olds eat salad and beg for cherry tomatoes at the grocery store. :) I'm hoping her good taste lasts into adulthood!
miss_thrifty 06-13-2006, 06:49 PM My grandmothers homemade bread right out of the oven with real butter(which i dont eat anymore lol)
My mother wasnt avery good cook, everything was fried lol but i guess my favourite was rapure, or schore. french for rapped potaoes smothered in bacon grease or pork grease and pork on top.
My grandmas meatpies were to die for, mega thick. always achristmas favourite!!!
autumnlynn 06-13-2006, 07:18 PM I grew up in a very small country town back east. Out where I lived, we had no "restaurants" but we had a local dairy bar. I loved their "footers" ; foot long hot dogs with sauce and their hot fudge sundaes. That was such a treat.
My mom was a great cook. I loved her sage stuffing which we only had at Thanksgiving. I used to make the cranberries and I loved watching them pop!
I also loved my mother's applesauce cake which we only had at Christmas. I also loved her yeast rolls. She always saved some dough and made cinnamon
rolls.
This thread brings back great memories.
santoria 06-13-2006, 07:24 PM my grandmother's dinners!! her roastbeef and mashed potatoes with the most RICH dark gravy that I am still trying to master....
love those family dinners (turkey and the trimmings, ham and scalloped potatoes). the ones that bring out all those fabulous memories from growing up. my other grammas fried chicken and bbqs in the backyard when we'd visit.

missymomof3 06-13-2006, 08:19 PM As odd as it sounds, I was a fruit and veggie person. The only veggie I didn't like was eggplant.
tervsforme 06-13-2006, 08:26 PM My grandmother's stuffed cabbages and her homemade pierogies. When I was at college I would go visit her about once a month for the weekend and there was always a huge pot of stuffed cabbages on the stove waiting for me when I got there. I also loved her saurkraut and pig hocks. I'm getting hungry just thinking about it...
bevjean 06-13-2006, 09:34 PM peanut butter cheeto sandwiches, Yummy!
fernykins 06-13-2006, 11:32 PM my mother use to make a cabbage stew with onions, carrots, turnips, ruttabgas and a litle meat with homemade bread......... My kids would have died if they had to eat something like that.

redmaples 06-19-2006, 10:46 AM My great gramdmother's specialty was eggplant parmesan. I am 4th generation to make it, it is still a family favorite.
My father used to make popcorn for all the kids in the neighborhood.
He had repaired an old carnival popcorn machine & put it on our patio.
Air popped popcorn is still a favorite snack.
DorothyBeverly 06-19-2006, 03:00 PM I loved junk food as a kid (still do..lol) my favorite was Doritos. My Mom used to have to take the bag away from me. I loved (and still do..lol) my Mom's homeade biscuits, gravy for breakfast and her stuffing at thanksgiving and christmas..nobody in this world can cook like her. I tell her all the time her cooking is the reason im fat.
kabin63 07-09-2006, 11:47 PM My mom's homemade spaghetti and meat sauce and her pies were/are to die for.
One Grandma's sausage and waffles and the other grandma's roast beef and noodles.
Eating out rarely occured in my home, but it was a treat if we ate at McDonald's and especially at dairy queen. Also soda pop was a real treat unless you were sick, then you could get 7up all you wanted. LOL
bevjean 07-09-2006, 11:53 PM peanut butter/cheeto sandwiches Yummy!!! The cheetoes add a nice crunch.
waterlover 07-10-2006, 12:02 AM Beverly I love peanut butter and love cheetos but never thought of putting those together. Might have to give it a try:mdance:
My favorite food growing up is one that probably most kids won't eat and that is Liver. My mother use to cook it with sauteed mushrooms and I loved it. When I grew up and left home I was never able to duplicate it.
MOMMYDEAREST 07-10-2006, 01:18 AM my absolute 2 favorites were my moms taco salad (yum yum yum) & her salisbury steak with gravy & mashed potatoes!!!!
baxjul 07-10-2006, 01:02 PM Whenever I got sick my mom would make me egg noodles with Campbells chicken broth! Now, whenever dd or I are sick, she says "Let's make Grandma's special soup."
bamamomto4 07-25-2006, 11:26 PM My mom cooked everything from scratch so its hard to pick a favorite.
I do miss her wonderful breakfasts though...homemade pancakes, biscuits, gravy, scrambled eggs, and bacon....every weekend, sometimes for supper during the week.
Another was her vegetable soup,chicken n dumplins,pinto beans,cornbread,chicken and dressing....how I miss those days....and her
Lady_V 08-09-2006, 06:30 PM My favorite food as a kid... and it HAD to be exact... orange american cheese on Wonder bread. I have NO idea why it had to be orange or Wonder, but, I knew the difference. (My daughter refuses to eat orange cheese and only eats whole wheat bread):brainy:
YankeeMom 08-09-2006, 06:37 PM Fried chicken and tacos.
I do remember family gatherings..holidays, graduations, weddings, etc. where I would eat so much I would just feel SICK :puck: LOL
My kids eat a lot more variety than I did as a kid. I think my mom had 6 meals that she knew how to cook. The rest were a meat, a veggie, and a starch kind of thrown together deals.
Droppedonmyhead 08-09-2006, 09:05 PM Hmmmmm. . .my Mom's chili. . .my Grandma's chicken and noodles (noodles were homemade), Cube Steaks and gravy and her ice box cheesecake.
Mercy me. . .I nearly forgot. . .my Mom's homemade fudge.
brenda67 08-09-2006, 09:44 PM My favorite was my Mom's Chicken Nokettelli a Hungarian dish ( this recipe is not in any cookbook)that know one can duplicate except me...I learned to make it at the age 12...only cause thats all I would ask my mom to make...LOL...so she had enough of me nagging her (it takes hours to make) so she said thats it I'm gonna show you how to make it....and I have made that dish probably 50 times over the past 20+ yrs...
Dessert would be my Mom's Raspberry Danish Dessert...very sweeeet...
Goodwin17 08-09-2006, 11:52 PM I loved my grandmother's biscuits, my mom's chicken and dumplings, and pizza. Oh and my mom's cornbread! I remember lots of carbs....lol.
jettsmom 08-10-2006, 04:20 PM My mom made the best fried chicken. She doesn't anymore.
I remember one time having tacos and they were so good, but she never made them again.
My dad always made macaroni, tomato sauce and bacon. Along with fried potatoes. He still makes it, but I haven't had it for a very long time.
I loved cheese and lettuce sandwiches. They were usually on some kind of brown bread. It wasn't rye, but I don't remember if it was wheat. I just remember that it was a darker brown.
