View Full Version : Breastfeeding Pillows?

I was reading a thread here earlier this morning on how great a "Boppy" was. On Amazon, most of the reviewers said that while the Boppy was good for many things, it was not good for breastfeeding - that the "My Breast Friend" pillow was better.

Any opinions? Should I really have one if I'm going to BF? Are they really helpful or incredibly unnecessary?

I hated it, and it was definitely not good for breastfeeding for me. Regular pillows worked better. DH likes it, and now that DD is 3, she likes it.

I personally do not think it is a necessity, and I won't use mine if I have another child.

I never used mine for breastfeeding, I liked just a regular pillow. I used it more to prop the baby up and behind the baby when she was trying to sit up. I will say my daughter is 7 and still sleeps with her boppy. She loves it. The cover is removable to wash and she just loves it. I think you could purchase one at a consignment store and you may get a lot of use out of it.

Got a boppy...never used it for breastfeeding. Too uncomfortable. If I used anything at all, it was a regular pillow.

I have a Boppy and LOVE it! It works great for me for nursing and is a big help when I have to nurse when we're out and about on extended errands. I also use it for propping ds2 up for playtime.

I have a 4 month old and I've never used a boppy. I like holding him when I feed him. My husband uses a regular pillow to prop him though.

Sara, If you decide on a boppy, you can get one at T.J. Maxx or Marshalls for $15. I plan on buying one.

As a NICU nurse and a lactation consultant, I think the my brest friend fits most people better (although I hate the stupid name!). With the sloping sides of the boppy, the baby tends to slip into a crevice between the mom and the pillow. I think these sorts of 'special' pillows are great when the baby is little and you're just getting the hang of nursing, but I feel that they don't get much breastfeeding use after the first couple of months. The boppy is nice for propping a 3-5 month old baby, or for a little support around a baby just learning to sit (around 6 months). After they can sit independently, I don't see much use for them.

I had a bobby when my babies were little. I didn't use it much for nursing. I preferred a regular pillow when they were little. And once they got big, they just laid across my lap, with maybe a throw pillow stuffed under my elbow.

If I ever had another baby, I would just use an old pillow (remember it's going to get milk leaked on, dripped out of baby's mouth on it, and probably spit up upon).

Just my 2c.

i never used any boppy pillow and i have a 4 month old baby. regular pillows worked for me. depends on ur convenience if u need a firm or soft pillow. toss a small pillow in the car and it comes handy when u want to feed in car.

Valerie, I took your advice and registered for the My Breast Friend pillow - and it definetly ranks up there with one of the top five things we got! It makes night time feedings a lot easier since it supports my son's body weight, so I only have to worry about supporting his head. I also like the little pocket it comes with - I use it to keep a small tube of the Lansinoh stuff and a nursing bra pad in (for the one I'm not using).

~These are my thoughts exactly!I thought my boppy was helpful after my c-section, it seemed to protect my incision from Roman's constant kicking while nursing. As he got bigger it was much less comfortable to use but I continued to use it because the kicking thing made nursing lying down so uncomfortable! My daughter was a dream! 3 weeks on the boppy till her neck was strong and then lying down whenever possible. (it's like a break for Mommy!) If I nursed her anywhere else I'd just stuff a throw pillow under my elbow. I always felt that the boppy wasn't a great fit for me because I'm extremely thin and small busted. My SIL is the exact opposite of both and loved hers.~

I'm glad it worked well for you. :)
