View Full Version : Are You Always Learning Something New In Regards To Frugality?

I remember several years ago after studying frugality for quite some time, I felt I knew everything there was to learn about saving money. So I stopped reading about the subject and stopped visiting frugality sites. Then I lost my job and started reading up on the subject again . Well I was amazed to find that there was a lot of new (to me) information out there and there were some ideas I had never entertained before because I had more money. I didn't know you could swap books on the internet, I never thought to make my own condiments, cleaning products and beauty products. I never thought I could dilute whole milk with half water. I never knew how much other frugalists were paying per month for food, what temperature they were setting their air-conditioners to etc. etc. And of course, it helps to visit these sites for support and motivation to continue on this path. I've learned that no matter how much you think you know, there's always something new to learn as the world continues to change and people continue to come up with creative ideas.

Very nicely put, Staceyy. It's always interesting to read how other people do things. I always thought I knew a lot about being frugal, but after reading the threads. . .I don't even know the half of it.

Yep. I agree. Every time I think it's time to stop reading and researching, something new pops out at me and I find myself saying "why not?" Even though we don't need to be frugal anymore, it has become a game and fun for me. How far can I stretch a dollar? I'm hoping to keep it that way for life.

This is why I reread the Complete Tightwad Gazette about once a year. Every time I read it, new things pop out. I am at a different place in life each time, circumstances have changed, what I have the time or energy for have changed. I am always learning new things

I am learning all of the time. I also find I might KNOW something but I need to apply it.

Coming here helps motivate me.
Plus, you can only absorb so much information at once and you can only adopt so many lifestyle changes at once. As you add new things and they become part of your repetoire and habits, then there is room to add a new one.

This summer I've been hanging laundry all the time and making my own yogurt.

I agree totally, if I did not keep reading and coming on this site, I would lose my motivation. Any time I take a few days off, I notice myself spending a bit more than i should, It is a constant evolution.

For me, it's not only that I am learning something new, but finding a way to apply it to my life. Of course it doesn't help at all that we are in the middle of this remodel and everything is such a mess and no place to use some of the info. I get.....very frustratiing. I don't have countertops yet, but have a small table. Sometimes it's such a hassle, but I continue to hold onto the hope that it will get better.

Not only do I find myself learning new things, but I find that my situation changes. Getting married, having kids, living in different parts of the country - some frugal tips work only in certain situations. So I find that everytime my situation changes, I wind up learning more or using tips I just glossed over before.

I'm always impressed with everyones' abilities but I LOVE to hear everyones success stories and accomplishments!!!!!!!! Reading all the success stories makes me want to work that much harder so I can post mine. I always check the signatures for updates and cheer for all the balances that are going down!!!!!!

Isn't that the truth, all it takes is a couple of days of not really paying attention and I start slipping back into my old sprend thrift ways.

Sometimes, I truly learn something new. Sometimes, I simply hear/read something again, but this time it resonates with me. Maybe it's something I'm finally ready to try or I actually understand it better this time. It varies. But I do agree with those who say that it helps to visit places like this or re-read some of those frugality books to stay motivated. I'm surrounded in the real world by people who don't believe in being mindful of spending and such, so it's too easy to succumb to those ways if I don't stay connected to people such as I find here. I'm nowhere near as frugal as most of you, but I'm better than I was just from visiting here.
