My three Kitties only get store bought food. If there is a better alternative that is healthier for them, I would like to know. :)

My mom was just telling me this morning about a book she was reading about feeding your pets a homemade diet. I was curious if anyone had tried anything like that. :) Think I'm going to search around online and see if I come up with any good information. I'll post some links here if I come up with anything.

I feed Nutranuggets to both my dog and cat. It is a premium brand without the price. Both of them get scraps (they got the heart, liver, neck and gizzard of the chicken I am cooking this morning) off and on.

The diet you mention might be BARF--Bones And Raw Food. Gypsy's breeder makes this for ALL of her dogs and they look great! I don't have the time or the extra money for this, but both my critters have done well on Nutranuggets. At shows, judges mention that she's in great condition and has a wonderful shiny coat!

Cat and birds all get store bought food. Birds get veggies for treats and cat often gets a sneak of tuna (when ever I can get it by dh...he has a tuna fish stash because I am allergic to fish, he's gotta get his fish somehow!)

We buy because I haven't taken the time to study out what a healthy homemade diet for a cat would be. I know it's not human food. The pet food manufacturers spend lots of money on research and if you read the label on many pet foods they are loaded with extra vitamins and other nutrients.

When Hershey first came to live with us we were really poor and I bought the cheapest food we could find. At five the vet said she was underweight and had to go on kitten food to gain weight. That taught me that what you feed a cat matters just as much as what you feed a human child. Right now she's on Purina One dry food a special formula for hairballs in the morning (she eats on it all day) and 1/4 can of meat before I go to bed.

Our dogs and cats get store brand food - not the most expensive, but a good medium range brand.

I would like to recommend if anyone is feeding Ol' Roy or another bottom range food to switch to Purina or Pedigree at least. You'll find that the pets make less "waste" and they'll be healthier. It's cheap food, but you get what you pay for.

Just bumping old threads. :) I said store brand, but really I meant Iams.

2 of our 3 cats get S/D from the vets to reduce bladder crystal formation. The 2 dogs are finishing up an Iams bag, but they don't care for it much. I think the next bag will be Pro Choice or Science Hill. Every now and then I spoil them and put some stock on their food as a treat... it is very funny when they learned to expect it. I had some retraining to do. LOL

Our cats get dry primarily, canned occasionally as a treat and always have some chicken or fish if that's what I'm cooking for supper. They also love corn, green beans, baby lima beans, turnip and mustard greens and buttered cornbread as treats. I would estimate that their diet is roughly 90% dry food.

Our dog gets primarily an all natural dog food called Wysong. We do give her some scraps of people food.

:kitty: I give my cats purina indoor formula. I recently switched from Iams because of the contamination list had some of their products on it. I also switched from giving canned wet cat food as a treat to canned tuna fish.

The dog is now being transitioned from Purina Puppy to Purina Dog since hes a year and a half old, he probably should have been off the puppy 6 months ago but we just got him about 2 weeks ago.

The cats eat special kitty, ive tried more expensive brands neither of them will touch it, and the vet says they are okay.

Since the Pet Food Scare I WON'T feed them ANY commercial pet food. The dog gets Canidea and the Cats get Felidae - ALL NATURAL pet food, NO WHEAT, NO SOY, NO CORN, NO GARBAGE. And they LOVE it.....I've noticed that their coats are softer and shines!

I feed my cats Naturals dry cat food by Purina. I also still give them moist food (9 Lives) but no moist food with meat chunks or from pouches!

Dog gets Nutro. I like it because it has the joint supplement Glucosomine in it. Keeps me from having to buy the sepearate supplement (want to make sure his joints stay healthy since he's an active dog)

Cats get Friskies dry food all day and wet food twice a day.

Dog also manages to eat lots of cat wet food when he can sneak it in!

Freya my rotty gets Beneful. Once a week for a treat for her I cook oatmeal, rice, garlic and spinach together and if I'm cooking chicken or turkey I will pour in some of the juice. She gobbles it up.

Our lab eats Science diet-just the dry kind. He has chronic ear infections and this is the only brand that he can tolerate. I have made homemade dog food when he had surgery and his stomach was tender. It had ground turkey and veggies in it.

Our schnauzer Harley eats Iams Smart Puppy. We had him on Beneful but he had allergies to it and it caused him to chew his feet all the time so we went back to Iams and he thrives on it. :paw:

Dogs and cats are suppose to eat their original prey and while it's not often they get to hunt kill and eat naturally, we should provide them with their optimum diet. There are no kibbles in nature! My cat gets raw chicken, turkey or whatever I can find that's all natural, organic and free from 'cides. She's 20 and still going strong!
