View Full Version : 82 Hours and not yet a monster
TheRootedNomad 01-12-2007, 08:34 AM A small but major step on my way to kicking my monkey!!!!!!! :fdance: I have now been over 82 hours without a "sickorette".:fpunch: and the best part is I have not morphed into a complete irrattional, edgey, fire breathing monster. Oh I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY want one but I've never made it this far before without hubby beginning to wonder if he wants a divorce, or my kids wondering what happened to mommy, or my co-workers wanting to kill me ....although all of them except hubby were always careful to not tell me I was being a complete $^@#%. So that I'm managing to be a stable human this time is a huge step on my way to accomplishment this time!!!!!
justpeachy92 01-12-2007, 08:44 AM congrats on the 82 hours, today is my day one, but I am also on the patch. Was funny my 9 yr old son walked in the bathroom when I was putting it on, and he goes.....MOM your on the patch!!!!.....with the tone of voice he used one would have thought he caught mom doing something illegal. Was just to funny.
nuisance26 01-12-2007, 10:25 AM ~Wow that's awesome! You can do this! :cheergrl:~
Katybird 01-12-2007, 10:43 AM Congrats to both of you! That is a great start for you both. Kudos and more kudos, you are on your way to a tobacco free life and better health. :dancing: :dancing: :band: :band:
AprilP 01-12-2007, 10:57 AM You can do it!!!!
I quit one year ago as of New Year's. It's hard, but just keep telling yourself how much better you'll feel.
AND how much extra money you'll have!!!!
Here in Houston, they just added an extra dollar tax to every pack, so I KNOW I'll never be tempted again, I just cannot pay that much for a pack of cigs.
It might help if you give yourself a little treat for each milestone. Like your favorite candy for one week of no smoking, or a tiny splurge (like a bottle of your favorite perfume) for 6 months. Nothing outrageous, but it basically pays for itself, since you are not spending the money on cigs.
We're behind you!!!!!
WTG! I haven't smoked in years but still get the cravings once in a while. Love not having to pay for smokes any longer!
That's wonderful!! I'm doing the happy dance on your behalf. I quit a month ago and sometimes it has been rough--but it's worth it. I agree with AprilP--reward yourself, you deserve it!!
acidcookie 01-12-2007, 11:39 AM GOOD JOB! My sister's tried to quit several times and hasn't made it. I can imagine it's nearly impossible.
Amanda W 01-12-2007, 04:23 PM You're doing great! Keep it up!
fernykins 01-12-2007, 04:28 PM I think thats great...........one day at a time..........

favesis37 01-12-2007, 05:21 PM congrats! keep up the good work
Cricket1 01-12-2007, 11:34 PM Fantastic job. Anytime you need a pat on the back, you can get one from me. You must be so proud of yourself. You can do this!!!
PrairieRose 01-13-2007, 12:24 AM  Woo Hoo! Hang in there. Gripey (who quit 2 years ago this coming Valentine's Day) says it gets easier by the day (with the intermittent cravings thrown in).
Sundae 01-13-2007, 09:02 AM Hang in there!!! I never smoked so I have no idea what you and others are going through, BUT I did come from a family of smokers and was at my moms bed side when she was only 59 and died from lung cancer. So think of your kids also, and NEVER pick up one of those nasty things again.
YOU HANG IN THEIR GAL :wall: AND KEEP YOURSELF BUSY!
gypsysoul 01-13-2007, 01:28 PM YOU CAN DO THIS, YOU CAN DO THIS,
Try breaking your day into small chunks--like whew i made it to lunch, and then mid aft. coffee , then dinner etc.etc. It was about the only thing that worked for me. I also used the patch for the first several weeks. At first the itching and burning would nearly send me thru the roof but that stops after about 10 min. I have been smoke free for 8 months and would have to say that the most difficult part for me was the first 6 months. I had some preconceived notion i guess that after 3 months everything would magically be better-lol. It wasnt but I hung in there and honestly say all the cravings are gone and now i could just kick myself in the pants for all that money i wasted!!!!!!! We are here for you, u can do this. Baby steps my friend !
happymommy 01-16-2007, 09:44 AM Congratulations! Best of luck to you, you can do it!!!!!
Cheering you on!
TheRootedNomad 01-16-2007, 09:54 AM Thank-you all for you're wonderful support!!!!!! Last night at 9p.m. was the one week milestone. I really feel this is doable at this point.....at the same time part of me wanted to celebrate that milestone with "just one". I didn't but I was hearing the voice.
TheRootedNomad 01-16-2007, 10:07 AM justpeachy92----- I tried the patches several times and they didn't work for me....I seem to have more of an oral fixation....the gum is doing a much better job for me. Hope the patches are working for you....if you find you have an oral thing going on though try the gum before you give in......GOOD LUCK....this is rough.
Darlene 01-16-2007, 10:25 AM I'm so proud of you! WTG! :thumb: 20+ yr. cold turkey ex-choker here.
YankeeMom 01-16-2007, 10:47 AM Keep it up!
Every day of no cigarette adds to your lifetime!!
Edelweiss 01-16-2007, 12:56 PM 2 weeks and 2 days here. Of course, this is about the 50th time I've tried to quit. This time I cheated...I had my wisdom teeth extracted, so that kept me smoke-free for about a week, and then the worst of it was over. I know I'm not going back this time because we're planning to start trying for a family in August and I don't want to have to go through quitting all over again when I'm trying to get pregnant.
dolphin 01-16-2007, 03:12 PM Good for you! :queen2: 25 1/2 hours for me! I am doing it cold turkey since my doc said there isn't anything on the market that I can safely take. It's so hard to quit! :pdoff:
tbs727 01-16-2007, 03:51 PM Good job everyone!!! You can do it!
frugalfriend 01-16-2007, 06:00 PM Congratulations!! That is awesome! Keep it up ~ you can do it, you'll really enjoy the healthy new you!! :)
TheRootedNomad 01-17-2007, 08:22 AM 2 weeks and 2 days here. Of course, this is about the 50th time I've tried to quit.
Cheering you on::cheer4: :cheer4: :cheer4: :cheer4:
:lol3: I'm at minimum on attempt number 50 as well. Three major differences for me this time.
1) DH has agreed to smoke outside and has been awesome about it, however he did say if I'm the one who lights up in the house this time he will never again go back to smoking outside because I've asked. (This has been a pattern with my attempts ..... forcing no smoking in the house and then being the one to back off on it when I want one) Anotherwords I can fail at my attempt but I better not light up in the house....the weather has been YUCK so that's helped alot.
2) I'm not worrying "as much" about the weight gain.....I've already been on the "gain train" for the past several months and haven't been able to solve that issue .... now at least I have an excuse. Not that this means i'm not paying attention to it. I'm just not beating myself up over it. I try to remember to stick gum, a straw, a pretzel, sugar free sucker, or a toothpick in my mouth instead of chocolate but sometimes :choco: is all that will do.
3) (probably the biggest deal for me) I've posted it! That means I've told a lot of people and for "me" personally I feel like a fool when I go back on something I've said. So the more I post about it the less likely I am to go back. Thanks ALL!!!
Good for you! 25 1/2 hours for me! I am doing it cold turkey since my doc said there isn't anything on the market that I can safely take. It's so hard to quit!
Cold Turkey!!!!!! Wow Dolphin!!!!:hug2: Lots of cheering comeing you're way as well!!!:cheer4: :cheer4: :cheer4: :cheer4:
[B]Good Luck all!!!!!B]
Monner 1 01-17-2007, 12:28 PM I am so proud of you getting rid of the nasty smoking habit. I lost my sister at the age of 50 years old due to lung cancer. It was devistating to all of us in the family. She was my only sister and I miss her each and everyday and it has been 12 years. You hang in there and your life will be sooooooo much better and your family will have you around for all of the good times.
Buckeye5 01-17-2007, 05:03 PM I have been trying to quit too. I did really well, then slipped up, and bought cigarettes and smoked them. I am smokefree again, and will be putting the patch back on, it burns me, so I hate it, but it does help with the cravings. We can do this, I have a smokers cough and just the few weeks that I was smokefree, my cough went away, my lungs felt better, then I slipped up for 2 days, and I am back at again!!! We can do this. I have never smoked in my house, always outside or in the garage, so it being cold should help too.
yearn2bfree 01-19-2007, 12:05 AM good for you!!! one day at a time, one minute at a time sometimes!!! my dh and i were just discussing when our quit date will be. my brother and son are staying with us right now and they both smoke, so they'll be upset that they'll have to go outside to do it. we only smoke in the kitchen now with the kitchen door closed to the rest of the house.
patchouli 01-19-2007, 12:48 PM :dancing: Yay for everyone!
Keep going, it does get easier. I quit smoking four months ago today!
freerangers 01-26-2007, 08:01 AM Just adding a note of support and praise for all of you who are trying to quit that smoking--how's it going?!?
~~:grball:
all4free 01-26-2007, 10:22 AM I admire you. I tried the gum and made it 2 weeks and failed. I think I'll try the patch next. I don't smoke alot, so you would think it would be easier to quit. And I only smoke in my car to and from work (1hr 10 min drive). I'll be reading this post faithfully!

The worst time for me is in the car. I'm so used to the hand-to-mouth habit I don't know what to do with myself while I'm driving.
Today is my 3rd week and 1st day smoke-free. It's getting better. I don't think about smoking nearly as often as I did at first. I would have slipped last night at school, but it was too cold to stand outside during the break!
TheRootedNomad 01-30-2007, 08:26 AM First off lots of cheers to all the rest of you giving this a go
:cheergrl: :cheergrl: :cheergrl: :cheergrl: :cheergrl: :cheergrl: :cheergrl:
Now for how I'm doing.......notice I'm still keeping track in hours.
The positives::vibes:
~I still haven't become the snapping, snarling, boob I expected and I'm guessing I'm pretty much past the point now where that's a danger
~Hubby's still smoking outside .... which means he's smoking less too!
~I don't have to be embarressed for non-smokers to get in my car because of the way it smells (still a faint odor but it's hundreds of times better)
~Already using lots less of the gum
The Negatives::(
~I've gained 6 pounds in 3 weeks (I'm suppose to be losing weight)
~I'm still antsy a lot Still fighting that just one battle
~(whisper) Hubby smells yucky when he comes in from smoking....now that I'm not immune to the smell.
How's everyone else doing??????
crazyBMB 01-30-2007, 08:31 AM Keep it up! Your doing great! :fdance:
miss_thrifty 01-30-2007, 11:30 AM congarts!!!! u can do it, just have lots of veggies premade ahead or low fat snacks. Carrot sticks and crunch things helped my hubby get through it, and was he nasty at times. lol But having something to nibble on helped, and feeling like the idea of the smoke was still there.
Keep up the good work!!!

betharoo0 02-09-2007, 04:32 PM Keep it up girl!!!!! Munch carrot sticks! Or crunch ice! That is just one of the things I did to help keep the weight down and to release tension for wanting a sickorette!!!!
Also too wait til its been a LONG while and you will really notice the NASSSTY SMELL of them babies. I was at Food4less and This one woman I could smell all over the store!!! Even though it smells gross I DO STILL crave them but its not as bad of course as when I first quit!!!!
Hey, good for you to keep to it with dh smoking and all!!!! WOW!!!! I could not have done that!
Also keep track of your savings! Another great incentive!
:congrats:
