View Full Version : When yard saling, do you dicker with prices?
homesteadmamma 08-25-2002, 11:38 PM Or do you pay the price that they have for that item.
I refuse to pay the price they have at yard/garage sales. I always dicker and if they won't come down, I don't purchase it, no matter how much I want it.
I'm also teaching the kids to do the same thing. They now come to me and ask if they should ask to get it for less.
What about you?
heaven 08-26-2002, 12:43 AM my poor mother almost died the first time we went yard saling together i don't pay full price. i do dicker and usually if they don't come down i don't buy it either. I figure if they want to get rid of it they will come down on it.
Dixie 08-26-2002, 03:41 PM It all depends- if I 'm the first customer of the day, I ususally pay the asking price, if it's reasonable. Later in the day, or if the price is too high(imo) to begin with, I always haggle. I think haggling is expected at yard sales. The worst they can say is,'no'.
bmiltimore 08-26-2002, 04:44 PM If the price is already reasonable for the item, I just pay it. If they ask too much, I dicker and if they say no, I don't buy it.
It is amazing how prices can vary on the same items from one garage sale to another.
AandAmom 08-26-2002, 05:21 PM It depends on the price, and the time of day. If it is toward the end of the sale, I'm going to haggle everything. After all, they want to get rid of this stuff!
KathiS 08-26-2002, 08:01 PM I am like Betsy. If it seems like a good price, I just pay it. If it seems high, and it is something I want, I will ask if they can do any better on the price. If I feel it is still too high, I just say, "Have a nice day" and walk away.
simplemom 08-26-2002, 09:07 PM I always bargain the price, unless the price is very good and fair. I bargain everything: our car insurance, our house insurance, etc...lol my dh says I'm good at it. I'm always polite and very kind, too, when I do it.:)
Lori Biever-Launder 08-26-2002, 11:33 PM I sometimes dicker. If the price is fair, I will just pay it. If I am buying a whole bunch of stuff, I will ask for a discount. If kids are selling some of their toys for their OWN money, I dodn't dicker unless it's way too high. If I find a spot or something like that, I will ask for a discount.
charmed407 09-20-2002, 06:24 PM  I had a friend with me once to go yard saling - She wanted 2 pairs of jeans...each $2. Well, she only had $2 and change (she was getting some other stuff also) an' lil 'ol me went over to the woman and asked her if she would take $1 for each. She said no and I said ok and handed the jeans back to her...then she said ok ok I'll take $1/1.
I still cringe that I almost lost a 'sale' that someone else was going to buy, but luckily it worked and the woman came down on the price. I think my friend would've SHOT me! BUT BUT BUT....
:)hey, she's got the jeans and for only $1 each...that's worth the scare I guess, right?:(
Jerseygirl 09-24-2002, 07:27 PM Last weekend I got a carseat that they were asking $18 for at 10 a.m. , $10 at 1 p.m. and I got for $8 at 1:30 p.m. But when I'm buying babyclothes for .10-.50 each I don't generally bother. Dh bought a drill press for the asking price of $100, but got the guy to throw in $45 more in saws and sanders and he took the time to find the paperwork for all of it!
dolphin 09-25-2002, 12:41 AM If I think it's a fair price I don't haggle. I just pay it. I walk away from high priced yard sales that won't haggle. Gosh I haven't been to a yard sale in way to long. lol
