View Full Version : Do you iron?
Sara Noel 08-28-2002, 01:18 AM and do you use starch? Am I alone? Does "no one" iron anymore and use spray starch? LOL
I was raised ironing everything under the sun. Clothes had to be pressed and looking purty. Neat creases etc. I remember feeling trapped in the basement for hours under a mountain of clothes. LOL
I love ironed clothing now and seem to notice others that are not pressed.

Hawkshop 08-28-2002, 02:30 AM I do not iron hardly anything. I don't have the time to do that except for dh's uniforms. I usually just throw it in the dryer to get the wrinkles out.
lucy979 08-28-2002, 05:07 AM I rarely bring out the iron! I have only a few items that need to be ironed and I don't wear them that often.
Michelle 08-28-2002, 05:41 AM Only when I have to! Dave has a casual work environment, so his clothes come out of the dryer wrinkle-free (ie no dress shirts), and I don't ever buy anything that's 100% cotton (except for undies). I hate ironing, and I do a LOT of it for my quilting. I'd rather do it for that than for clothes.
homesteadmamma 08-28-2002, 08:47 AM Funny I was going to ask the same question. I never use to iron, in fact I made sure that when I took clothes off the line, that they would be put away right away so I didn't need to iron. Didn't have the time. But my mom irons everything, right down to towels.
Then I purchased some lace hankies and they looked awful not ironed, So I've now taken to ironing in the last month and I'm really enjoying it. I'm not where my mom is though, towels don't get ironed. But hankies, all our blouses and dd's do.
sixfreds 08-28-2002, 08:57 AM I almost never iron.. only when I HAVE to do I...
when I am sewing/quilting I iron more than I iron clothes...

QuilterMom 08-28-2002, 09:32 AM I rarely iron anything (usually just our church clothes on Sunday mornings) and I don't use starch at all.
AandAmom 08-28-2002, 09:34 AM Shoot, I don't even own an iron! :D
Jenlee 08-28-2002, 09:36 AM I use the dryer to unwrinkle most of our clothes and I buy the wrinkle-free shirts from Brooks Brothers for dh. I find them at the outlet stores in TN and GA for only about $45 and they last for years!!
Sara, before wrinkle-free came along, I did iron all of dh's work clothes and I always used spray starch on them, even on the cuffs and arms. He hated it, but they looked good.
simplemom 08-28-2002, 09:36 AM I iron only when needed. I hardly ever had time with 4 kids growing. Now that they will be in school all the 4 of them, I will at least have the time to iron what needs to be ironed in advance instead of last minute! lol
Sara, you say you use spray starch? I didn't even know about this...you use it with shirts only or everything? Can you explain to me what happens when you use it in compared you don't.
Thank-you...:D
mommy2three 08-28-2002, 10:29 AM i only iron hubby's dress pants or shirts. we just usually throw everything in the dryer with a damp washcloth to get the wrinkles out. ;)
heaven 08-28-2002, 11:11 AM I drive my mother crazy when i ask her "Iron what's an Iron." I use to own 3 and now i have none. We are talking about that thing plastic metal gets hot run it over clothes i think i remember those things.
seadream 08-28-2002, 11:15 AM The only thing that gets ironed around here is dh dress shirts for work.
debbiepete 08-28-2002, 11:28 AM I have to starch and iron my hubbies clothes daily. The Supreme court requires shirts, ties and jackets daily excpet Friday when he can wear a polo shirt.
Dixie 08-28-2002, 11:31 AM I own three irons, at the rate I use them they should last a lifetime!:smball:
paelthom 08-28-2002, 11:54 AM Sara,
I love to see pressed clothes too. I iron each evening what I will wear the next day. My closets are cramped and to iron them after laundry day and hang them back would just result in them getting wrinkled again. I also iron some of my daughters clothes. I want her to look fresh and crisp - right before she wipes her Dorito covered hands on her clothes LOL.
AmyBoz 08-28-2002, 01:18 PM When we first got married, I was an ironin' fool! I even ironed dh's boxers and t-shirts. Then, WE HAD A BABY!!! I didn't iron even one thing for about a year. Lately, my schedule has gotten very busy, but as I've been air drying more things, I find that they need to be ironed before wearing. So, I usually save up the things that need to be ironed and do them one night a week while watching tv. Dd has gone to sleep and dh is doing stuff on the computer, so I don't feel like I'm taking time away from the family to iron their clothes!
crdurham 08-28-2002, 01:29 PM You mean they still make irons??? lol I never iron unless absolutly necessary...we have a de-wrinkle setting on our dryer and it works great. My dh wears t-shirt and jeans to work...our dress clothes usually get a toss in the dryer.... :box:
mom2knk 08-28-2002, 03:24 PM I have 2 irons that we got as wedding gifts 17 plus years ago and they have never been out of their boxes:shame:
I don't iron and I don't use starch!!!
summercat 08-28-2002, 04:07 PM No ironing here infact I just gave my iron & a can of starch to a friend of mine who does still iron.
Karla 08-28-2002, 05:53 PM Ok, I'm kind of out numbered here but I line dry all clothes and I iron the shirts that wrinkle, no more no less, its really not my favorite thing to do. No starch
Jerseygirl 08-28-2002, 10:43 PM When dh had to dress for work I ironed and starched a lot, now that he can do polo shirts and wrinkle free khaki style pants I iron my table cloths, napkins and the occasional skirt for myself. My great aunt used to iron everything-pajamas, sheets, boxer shorts, she needed a hobby!
doodlebug 08-29-2002, 12:54 AM I remember my mom ironed everything even my dad's boxers and the sheets. She used to get the clothes off the line and then sprinkle them with some water and put them in a plastic bag and put it in the refrigerator for a while. She used a wringer washer and hung all the clothes outside year round. I can remember her bringing in clothes that were totally stiff because they were frozen. We never had a new washer and dryer until I was 10. I still have her ironing board and every time I get it out I think about her. I iron mostly church clothes and sometimes curtains and when I'm sewing. I like to iron, I just don't like the allergies I have from some of the dyes that the iron seems to cause a reaction with, especially blues and reds.
Ilovesewing 08-29-2002, 02:33 AM Yes, just about every day. And I have a can of starch sitting on my kitchen counter right now - probably waiting for tomorrow morning's ironing job!;)
Lori Biever-Launder 08-29-2002, 04:22 AM What ezz thees worrrd, "irrron"? LOL I don't iron anything!
Katybird 03-11-2003, 10:57 PM Y'all will think I am crazy but I really like to iron. I love the way it makes my clothes feel, just like when they were new. I use starch or sizing on everything I iron. I think it makes the clothes last longer and they are more resistant to dirt and stains too. I love the smell of starch in the sewing room on a spring afternoon with the windows open, it reminds me of my Grandmother.
bamamomto4 03-11-2003, 11:14 PM Iron!!ME??? NOWAY!!!! Not even when I have to..I throw the clothes in the dryer and try to smooth the wrinkles out!

Yes, I do iron. We have several items that are cotton or need ironing. I always starch and iron my curtains, doilies, napkins, tablecloths..etc.
When I iron clothing I use sizing..Not as stiff as starch..
This is me too! :D Drives my dh nuts when I iron my jeans! He won't let me do his, but when he isn't looking I do anyway!
Ellise 03-12-2003, 10:56 AM Yes! I iron just about everything. I do use spray starch. I love the way everything looks nice and neat.
voodidit 03-12-2003, 05:50 PM Iron, I don't even use the curling iron any more.
Heather 03-18-2003, 08:12 PM I am Heather and I love my iron................yes, really, I love to iron and I do get carried away but I really like my clothes this way!! My cousin laughs at me and calls me "Martha", last year for my birthday I received from her two ironing board covers (she bought two because at the time my cover was getting worn and she couldn't believe that anyone's ironing board cover would get worn out!!  ) I iron most clothes, tablecloths, curtains, doilies, and yes the occasional tea towel!!;) My mother always ironed and I guess it is a trait passed down!:)
