Does anyone have a root cellar or plan on building one?
We don't have the area to build one in but we have a cistern in our basement that is no longer used. Dh plans on making it into cold storage area, basically on the same line as a root cellar.
Many homesteaders have one. Do you? Do you use it? Do you plan on building your own?

I don't have one now, but had one growing up. It was in the basement and wayyyyy in the back. Mom kept mostly her homecanned items and potatoes, onions, and apples there.
I have to admit I was afraid of that root cellar. LOL It was a dirt room for the most part. Mom would say "Go, grab me a few potatoes" and I would be petrified of the boogey monster. LOL (I just knew he lived in that dirt room.) hehe

Me too Sara, lol. I hated going in the cellar for any reason. It was just so creepy and I was always afraid of snakes or spiders, yuck.
My grandmother had a root cellar in her basement, and I loved going in there. It was a large room in one corner of the basement. All of her home canned food was in there and all of their storebought canned goods. I asked my dh to build one in our basement, but he doesn't think that we need one. We only heat a portion of the basement, so that part where I store my canned goods is cold.

You know for the past couple of months I've learnt so much on the net. I'm finding more and more interesting articles and here are a couple on root cellars.
